Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Ukrainian army’s tank brigades are spread thin. That could help to explain why the army’s highly anticipated counteroffensive in southern Ukraine hasn’t yet picked up much momentum. It seems likely manpower, rather than hardware, is the main reason the Ukrainians haven’t stood up more armored units. It’s not totally clear exactly how many tank brigades the army has. Maybe six. Maybe five. Maybe fewer. The Ukrainian army has a habit of keeping undermanned—practically non-existent—units on paper and occasionally touting them in the media. So observers should look for hard evidence of a brigade in combat before concluding that brigade is real. By that standard the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 17th Tank Brigades definitely exist. The 5th and 14th Tank Brigades, by contrast ... might be mostly fictional. Tank brigades are the hard core of any mechanized army. Artillery shapes the battlefield. Infantry hold terrain. But … [Read more...] about It Seems Ukraine Is Struggling To Form Tank Brigades

Even A Limited Nuclear War Could Kill Billions By Starvation, Study Finds
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline A full-scale nuclear war between Russia and the U.S. could trigger a global famine and kill more than 5 billion people, according to peer reviewed research published in Nature Food on Monday, while a smaller regional nuclear conflict could also lead to the starvation of billions, sober findings that show the wide-reaching implications of nuclear war as tensions between several nuclear-armed states soar amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Key Facts Soot blasted into the atmosphere following a nuclear exchange would obliterate crop production by blocking out sunlight and lowering temperatures, according to climate models simulating six different nuclear war scenarios. The models, which analyzed changes to agricultural production and trade in five scenarios for how smaller nuclear wars between India and Pakistan could play out and one large war between Russia and the U.S., showed that even a small, … [Read more...] about Even A Limited Nuclear War Could Kill Billions By Starvation, Study Finds
Putin Accuses U.S. Of Prolonging Ukraine Conflict, Labels Pelosi’s Taiwan Visit ‘Planned Provocation’
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the U.S. government of trying to prolong the conflict in Ukraine and raising tensions along the Taiwan Strait while delivering the opening address at the Moscow International Security Conference on Tuesday as Russia’s invasion of its neighbor continues. Key Facts Putin, who has previously criticized U.S. delivery of weapons to Ukraine, accused Washington once again of trying to draw out the conflict while using Ukrainian civilians as cannon fodder. Putin reiterated his earlier claims about the leadership in Kyiv of engaging in neo-nazism, without any evidence. The Russian president also slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, claiming it was “not just a trip of an individual irresponsible politician” but a concerted effort by Washington to destabilize the situation in that part of the world. Putin then alleged that the visit was “a … [Read more...] about Putin Accuses U.S. Of Prolonging Ukraine Conflict, Labels Pelosi’s Taiwan Visit ‘Planned Provocation’
We Must Act To Protect Ukrainian Children – From Abductions And Other Abuses Suffered In Putin’s War
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The last months have seen allegations of Russia abducting Ukrainian children and subjecting them to illegal adoptions in Russia. In March 2022, less than a month after Putin attacked Ukraine, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported that Russian forces have illegally removed 2,389 Ukrainian children from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts to Russia. In April 2022, Ukraine’s Human Rights Commissioner, Lyudmila Denysova , tweeted that more than 121,000 children have been forcibly deported to Russia over the weeks. This number includes orphaned children and those who have one or both parents. Denysova added that Russia was “mak[ing] changes to the legislation to organize the accelerated procedure of adoption of children from Donbas.” According to Denysova, “Russia repeats the 2014 scenario when it was taken out of the occupied Crimea of Ukrainian children so-called ‘train of hope’ for their adoption.” As the evidence of such … [Read more...] about We Must Act To Protect Ukrainian Children – From Abductions And Other Abuses Suffered In Putin’s War
‘Violating The Laws Of War’: Human Rights Watchdog Slams Ukrainian Military For Taking Cover In ‘Civilian Structures’
A global human rights watchdog accused Ukraine of employing battle tactics that deliberately endanger civilians, possible violations of international law, in a report published Thursday. Ukraine’s army set up military bases and launched weapons from densely populated urban areas, effectively placing targets for the Russian army on the backs of civilians, the watchdog, Amnesty International, said . Such tactics could amount to a violation of international law, as they require the Russian army to incur larger collateral damage and destroy civilian infrastructure in order to strike strategic Ukrainian targets. “We have documented a pattern of Ukrainian forces putting civilians at risk and violating the laws of war when they operate in populated areas,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s secretary general. “Being in a defensive position does not exempt the Ukrainian military from respecting international humanitarian law.” Russia has also violated internationally … [Read more...] about ‘Violating The Laws Of War’: Human Rights Watchdog Slams Ukrainian Military For Taking Cover In ‘Civilian Structures’
Ukraine carries out emergency drills near nuclear plant on frontline
Members of the State Emergency Service attend nuclear disaster response drills amid shelling of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, as Russia’s attack on Ukraine continues, in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine August 17, 2022. (REUTERS) ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine – Ukrainian authorities performed disaster response drills on Wednesday following repeated shelling at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest of its kind in Europe. Both sides accuse the other of attacks in the vicinity of the facility in recent days and engaging in what they call “nuclear terrorism”. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who wants a demilitarised zone to be established around the plant to avoid a potential catastrophe, will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday for talks. As part of the emergency drills, Ukrainian first responders donned full protective gear and then dealt with a man pretending to be a victim. After the team … [Read more...] about Ukraine carries out emergency drills near nuclear plant on frontline
The Russians Want Pisky. The Ukrainians Want Pisky. Neither Army Has Enough Troops For A Quick Victory.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A tiny ghost town just north of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine for weeks has been a meatgrinder for the Ukrainian troops defending it—as well as for the Russian troops trying to capture it. The battle grinds on in or around Pisky. Unending artillery barrages kill and maim Russians and Ukrainians alike, smash their armored vehicles and reduce the otherwise-lifeless village and surroundings—a locus of the fighting since Russia first invaded Ukraine eight years ago—to a spreading pile of rubble. Conflicting reports in recent days have Pisky under the control of Russian-backed separatist fighters from the Donetsk People’s Republic—or still under Ukrainian control following a spirited defense by the Ukrainian navy’s 56th Motorized Brigade. Pisky has changed hands many times since 2014. It could continue to change hands. What’s striking is just how close Pisky is to separatist territory—mere yards—and how difficult it has … [Read more...] about The Russians Want Pisky. The Ukrainians Want Pisky. The Ukrainians Have Struck Another Russian Airfield In Crimea
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A Ukrainian drone blew up an ammunition dump at a Russian airfield near Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea on Tuesday, according to Russian media. “Puffs of black smoke were visible above the military air base,” Kommersant reported . The Hvardiiske attack coincided with separate strikes on Russian facilities in Crimea, including a Ukrainian commando raid on a Russian ammo dump near Mayskoye—and came exactly a week after a Ukrainian attack on another Russian airfield on the strategic peninsula, which Russian forces seized in February 2014 in the opening phase of the now eight-year Russia-Ukraine war. It’s unclear whether any of the warplanes that fly from Hvardiiske—reportedly 12 Su-24 bombers and 12 Su-25 attack planes—suffered any damage. The jets support the Russian navy’s beleaguered Black Sea Fleet, whose headquarters are in Sevastopol in Crimea. In any event, the steady drumbeat of Ukrainian deep strikes … [Read more...] about The Ukrainians Have Struck Another Russian Airfield In Crimea
Strike At Iowa Army Ammunition Plant Could Have Big Consequences For Ukrainian Army
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Far from the Ukrainian front lines, labor trouble is brewing at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant . After a set of union contracts expire Friday , up to 500 workers represented by ten unions could walk off the job. Any failure to negotiate a new contract weakens America’s munitions supply chain. An extended work stoppage may even endanger the flow of critical ammunition to the Ukraine military. While the current production runs at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant are not detailed publicly, the Army-owned facility, which is managed by American Ordinance LLC , produces several important types of ground warfare munitions, including 40mm grenades, components for 60mm, 81mm and 120mm mortar cartridges, 120mm tank ammunition, shells of various sorts for 155mm cannons, clearing charges, demolition blocks and a range of missile components—including FGM-148 Javelin and FIM-92 Stinger warheads . NATO Ally Forges Ahead With Russian Weapons Deal, US Does Nothing
Turkey is allegedly forging ahead with a second purchase of S-400 missile defense systems from Russia, but the Biden administration’s response has been muted after the U.S. previously penalized the NATO ally for the first delivery in 2017. Turkey, a member of the NATO defense alliance, said that talks for the upcoming S-400 delivery corresponded to an existing contract with Russia that contained two delivery regiments, the first of which resulted in U.S. sanctions levied on Turkish defense industry leaders and the country’s expulsion from the U.S.’ F-35 fighter jet program, Reuters reported . The State Department Tuesday urged countries to refrain from transactions with the Russian defense industry but did not provide details on what kind of response Turkey’s scheduled purchase of advanced Russian weapons systems would receive from the U.S. “Our position on Turkey’s purchase of the S-400 is well known,” said State Department spokesman Ned Price. “But the point we have … [Read more...] about NATO Ally Forges Ahead With Russian Weapons Deal, US Does Nothing
