Rupiah nears breach of support with palm oil ban hurting trade

May 16, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (May 16): The rupiah risks weakening to its lowest level in almost two years as Indonesia’s ban on palm oil exports adds to headwinds from interest rate hikes in the US. The currency fell to a one-year low last week, despite an assurance from the central bank that it would stabilize the currency. Technical support at its April 2021 low is now in danger and a breach of this level would pave the way for a decline to its September 2020 low. Investors are watching for further export restrictions and rising demand for the dollar, said Divya Devesh, head of Asean and South-Asia FX research at Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore. He sees the rupiah depreciating to 14,800 to the greenback by the end of June, from 14,613 on Friday. Palm oil accounted for 1.5% of Indonesia’s gross domestic product in 2021 and the prohibition on shipments could cut US$2 billion from the nation’s exports for each month it stays in place, according to estimates from Goldman Sachs … [Read more...] about Rupiah nears breach of support with palm oil ban hurting trade

Bond traders reel as inflation hits world’s emerging local debt

May 16, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (May 16): As spiraling inflation spreads across the globe, emerging-market bonds from Turkey to Thailand are feeling the brunt. Local-currency debt from developing nations -- which is far more sensitive to a country’s domestic inflationary pressures than dollar denominated equivalents — has slumped almost 9% this year, the most since at least 2008, according to a Bloomberg index. There’s unlikely to be any relief soon as central bankers around the world attempt to control surging prices by raising interest rates even more aggressively — potentially risking growth in doing so. That certainly wasn’t the plan. Many developing economies led the charge in rate hikes last year, getting ahead of policy makers in the US and hoping to avoid a redux of the 2013 taper tantrum. But with inflation raging in the US and the strong dollar pressuring currencies elsewhere, these countries are now making a new rulebook. Policy makers across emerging nations are either … [Read more...] about Bond traders reel as inflation hits world’s emerging local debt

Wheat prices jump as India export ban adds to supply squeeze

May 16, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A PARIS/MANILA (May 16): International wheat prices jumped on Monday as an export ban by India, the latest country to use trade curbs to counter food inflation, threatened to further squeeze world wheat supply strained by the war in Ukraine. US and European wheat futures climbed by nearly 6%, with the Chicago market — the global benchmark — earlier reaching its daily trading limit and Paris prices approaching all-time highs. By end of its overnight trading session, Chicago futures were up 4.9%, off an earlier two-month peak. Wheat has contributed to record highs this year for global food prices as measured by the UN's food agency, with Russia's invasion of Ukraine upending the market by halting massive shipments from Ukrainian sea ports. India's embargo, prompted by a heatwave that has cut harvest prospects and sent domestic prices soaring, marks a policy U-turn after the government maintained just days earlier that it was still targeting record exports of … [Read more...] about Wheat prices jump as India export ban adds to supply squeeze

TikTok time: Art Basel HK welcomes ‘art influencers’ to its upcoming edition

May 16, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

For several months now, a new type of content creator has been springing up on social networks: art influencers. If they have quickly become the darlings of museums, art fairs are still reluctant to call on these art world newcomers. Now, Art Basel plans to welcome them to its next edition in Hong Kong, but only on certain conditions. Since its inaugural edition in 2013, Art Basel Hong Kong has attracted different types of audiences, from art collectors to gallerists and dealers, artists, journalists and now influencers. The fair's organisers have recently decided to offer content creators the opportunity to get accredited, in order to take their followers behind the scenes of the event. However, they will have to follow several rules of good conduct, reports Artnet News. For example, there's no question of doing "lives" in the aisles of the fair, let alone photographing other visitors without their permission. Accredited influencers are also asked to ensure they credit the … [Read more...] about TikTok time: Art Basel HK welcomes ‘art influencers’ to its upcoming edition

Funds stage sizable soy, soymeal selloff ahead of USDA data

May 16, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

NAPERVILLE, Ill., : Speculators have been easing massively bullish bets in Chicago-traded grain and oilseed futures in recent weeks, though they have been hesitant to add too many shorts due to unprecedented price levels and continuing uncertainties over global supplies. That sentiment may have been confirmed late last week with the U.S. government’s first supply and demand outlooks for the upcoming year, which showed stocks remaining relatively narrow through mid-2023, especially for wheat. CBOT corn and soybean futures have softened so far this month, falling a little more than 2% in the week ended May 10. In that period, money managers cut their net long position in CBOT soybean futures and options to 130,661 contracts from 153,253 a week earlier. That capped off their largest two-week soybean selling streak since June 2021 and their net long fell to the lowest levels since January, according to data from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Monkeypox Case Confirmed In United Kingdom, Here’s What This Rare Infection Can Do

May 8, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Monkeypox is not the type of thing that you see every day. Or even every year for that matter. It’s a very rare viral infection that can spread from person-to-person via close contact and could result in severe illness, even death. That’s why someone recently being diagnosed with monkeypox in England has prompted the U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to issue an announcement on Saturday . And the UKHSA tends to reserve such announcements for significant news that the general public needs to know rather than things like, “Person has pimple, can’t go to prom.” So before you try to use, “sorry I have monkeypox,” as an excuse to get out of work or a date, keep in mind that others may then call the public health authorities to get you placed in isolation. The infected person is indeed currently under isolation and receiving treatment at the expert infectious disease unit at the Guy’s and St Thomas’ National Health Services … [Read more...] about Monkeypox Case Confirmed In United Kingdom, Here’s What This Rare Infection Can Do

Lebanon vote weakens Hezbollah bloc as reformists book gains

May 17, 2022 by www.thejakartapost.com

Layal Abou Rahal (Agence France-Presse) (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Beirut   ● Tue, May 17 2022 An election in crisis-hit Lebanon appears to have dealt a setback to the biggest bloc, led by the Iran-backed Shiite Muslim Hezbollah party, and boosted reformists, provisional results showed Monday. Turnout was low in the general election Sunday, the first since the Mediterranean country was plunged into a deep economic crisis that has stoked popular fury with the hereditary and graft-tainted ruling class. Many polling booths lacked electricity, forcing voters to use their smartphone lights to cast their ballots, in a reflection of Lebanon's most painful crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no interruptions Privileged access to our events and programs Subscription to our newsletters We … [Read more...] about Lebanon vote weakens Hezbollah bloc as reformists book gains
