Rupiah nears breach of support with palm oil ban hurting trade
- A + A (May 16): The rupiah risks weakening to its lowest level in almost two years as Indonesia’s ban on palm oil exports adds to headwinds from interest rate hikes in the US. The currency fell to a one-year low last week, despite an assurance from the central bank that it would stabilize the currency. Technical support at its April 2021 low is now in danger and a breach of this level would pave the way for a decline to its September 2020 low. Investors are watching for further export restrictions and rising demand for the dollar, said Divya Devesh, head of Asean and South-Asia FX research at Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore. He sees the rupiah depreciating to 14,800 to the greenback by the end of June, from 14,613 on Friday. Palm oil accounted for 1.5% of Indonesia’s gross domestic product in 2021 and the prohibition on shipments could cut US$2 billion from the nation’s exports for each month it stays in place, according to estimates from Goldman Sachs … [Read more...] about Rupiah nears breach of support with palm oil ban hurting trade
Bond traders reel as inflation hits world’s emerging local debt
- A + A (May 16): As spiraling inflation spreads across the globe, emerging-market bonds from Turkey to Thailand are feeling the brunt. Local-currency debt from developing nations -- which is far more sensitive to a country’s domestic inflationary pressures than dollar denominated equivalents — has slumped almost 9% this year, the most since at least 2008, according to a Bloomberg index. There’s unlikely to be any relief soon as central bankers around the world attempt to control surging prices by raising interest rates even more aggressively — potentially risking growth in doing so. That certainly wasn’t the plan. Many developing economies led the charge in rate hikes last year, getting ahead of policy makers in the US and hoping to avoid a redux of the 2013 taper tantrum. But with inflation raging in the US and the strong dollar pressuring currencies elsewhere, these countries are now making a new rulebook. Policy makers across emerging nations are either … [Read more...] about Bond traders reel as inflation hits world’s emerging local debt
‘Jello skin’, a new holistic K-beauty trend, is going viral on TikTok
After "glass skin" and "dolphin skin", TikTok users are now all going crazy for "jello skin", a new anti-aging skincare trend straight out of South Korea. While it's really about boosting collagen production, this new trend draws on a simple concept that's already very much out there: holistic beauty. As beauty trends land thick and fast on TikTok, many are based on K-beauty – or Korean beauty – which has become a major source of inspiration in the West, despite the recent hype around new influences, including G-beauty (Germany), C-beauty (China), and T-beauty (Taiwan). The latest in line is a new viral skincare trend called "jello skin". Read more: Makeup goes hybrid, focusing on holistic beauty and formulated for skin health "Jello skin" – which evidently refers to Jell-O, the brightly coloured gelatin dessert well known in the US and Canada – seems to be linked to the TikTok account of the influencer @glowwithava, who regularly shares tips and tricks with her 1.4 … [Read more...] about ‘Jello skin’, a new holistic K-beauty trend, is going viral on TikTok
U.S. could ratify Finnish NATO membership before August, Senate Republican leader says
HELSINKI (Reuters) -The U.S. Congress will seek to ratify Finland's application to join the Western military alliance NATO before going on holiday in August, U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said in Helsinki after meeting with Finland's President Sauli Niinisto. Canada, NATO's other North American ally, also promised a quick ratification. "Certainly we hope to achieve it before the August recess when Congress typically goes out of session," McConnell told reporters on Monday. Niinisto confirmed on Sunday that Finland would apply for NATO membership, in a historic policy shift prompted by Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. Sweden is also planning to join. McConnell said there was broad bipartisan support among U.S. lawmakers for Finnish membership. "With regard to the size of the vote, it will be very significant. Not unanimous, but very significant," he said. McConnell stressed the Republican Party's commitment to continued U.S. participation in the … [Read more...] about U.S. could ratify Finnish NATO membership before August, Senate Republican leader says
Monkeypox Case Confirmed In United Kingdom, Here’s What This Rare Infection Can Do
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Monkeypox is not the type of thing that you see every day. Or even every year for that matter. It’s a very rare viral infection that can spread from person-to-person via close contact and could result in severe illness, even death. That’s why someone recently being diagnosed with monkeypox in England has prompted the U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to issue an announcement on Saturday . And the UKHSA tends to reserve such announcements for significant news that the general public needs to know rather than things like, “Person has pimple, can’t go to prom.” So before you try to use, “sorry I have monkeypox,” as an excuse to get out of work or a date, keep in mind that others may then call the public health authorities to get you placed in isolation. The infected person is indeed currently under isolation and receiving treatment at the expert infectious disease unit at the Guy’s and St Thomas’ National Health Services … [Read more...] about Monkeypox Case Confirmed In United Kingdom, Here’s What This Rare Infection Can Do
JetBlue Goes Hostile In Takeover Bid Of Spirit Airlines
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin H ell hath no fury like an airline scorned. Two weeks after its merger proposal was rejected, JetBlue is going hostile in its effort to acquire Spirit Airlines. Today JetBlue made a direct appeal to Spirit shareholders to vote against the “inferior, high risk and low value” Frontier deal and embrace its own all-cash offer of $30 per share. “This represents a 60% premium to the value of the Frontier transaction as of May 13, 2022 – a very compelling offer and higher than the premium implied by JetBlue’s original proposal,” according to a JetBlue statement. The airline added that it was willing to discuss a $33-per-share deal if Spirit will stop withholding diligence information about its business. MORE FROM FORBES JetBlue Sweetens Its Bid-But Spirit Airlines Says It Still Prefers Its Other Suitor By Suzanne Rowan Kelleher Earlier this month, Spirit rejected an offer from JetBlue in favor of the less … [Read more...] about JetBlue Goes Hostile In Takeover Bid Of Spirit Airlines

Genetics may free a woman convicted of killing her 4 babies and help other parents explain the unexplainable
By Julia Hollingsworth , CNN Updated 0430 GMT (1230 HKT) March 20, 2021 (CNN) Kathleen Folbigg has spent the past 18 years in prison for one of the most horrific crimes imaginable: killing all four of her babies. But new scientific evidence suggests that's not what happened. Genomic testing shows at least two of the Australian's babies likely died from a previously undiscovered genetic mutation that led to heart complications -- meaning she may have been wrongfully imprisoned for almost two decades. The finding has prompted 90 scientists -- including two Australian Nobel Laureates -- to ask the governor of New South Wales to pardon Folbigg and let her walk free. If that happens, Folbigg's case will be one of the worst miscarriages of justice in Australian history. The ramifications don't end there. Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, in India on an eight-day trip, is scheduled to meet with business leaders in Lucknow and other cities. He has already met the Chief Ministers of Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, seeking both bilateral partnerships as well as support to push Mauritius as an investment destination in these states, multiple sources in the know said.
