President Joe Biden was seeking much tougher measures on guns, including a ban on military style rifles often used by mass shooters WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden on Saturday signed into law the first significant federal bill on gun safety in decades, saying that while it falls short of what's really needed it will "save lives." "While this bill doesn't do everything I want, it does include actions I've long called for that are going to save lives," he said at the White House before leaving for two major diplomatic summits in Europe. The gun legislation includes enhanced background checks for younger buyers and federal cash for states introducing "red flag" laws that allow courts to temporarily remove weapons from those considered a threat. Billions of dollars have been allocated to crack down on "straw purchasers" who buy firearms for people not allowed to own them, and to curb gun trafficking. However, much tougher measures wanted by Biden and other Democrats did not … [Read more...] about Biden signs first significant US gun control law in decades

SYLVESTER: Inflation, Gas Prices, Drag Queens And Biden’s Sinking Poll Numbers
With inflation breaking records, gas prices pushing $10 per gallon and the border exploding with hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants, President Joe Biden decided to issue an executive order to “enhance protections for transgender children and take steps to ban conversion therapy as efforts continue in Texas and other states to restrict gender-affirming medical care.” “Gender affirming medical care” is a woke term that includes chemical castration and puberty blockers, as well as hormone injections from the opposite sex. It also includes actual castration and mastectomies that are not medically necessary. These irreversible and dangerous medical actions are more accurately described as “gender destroying.” They have nothing to do with care. There’s no way to know what the president means by “conversion therapy” in this this context, but it is clearly an effort prohibit any restrictions by states like Texas against parents who want to experiment on their own children with … [Read more...] about SYLVESTER: Inflation, Gas Prices, Drag Queens And Biden’s Sinking Poll Numbers
Biden signs bipartisan gun safety bill into law, takes swipe at Supreme Court
- A + A WASHINGTON (June 25): US President Joe Biden on Saturday (June 25) signed a bipartisan gun safety bill into law, the first major federal gun reform in three decades, days after the Supreme Court expanded gun rights. "This is a monumental day," Biden said at the White House, with his wife Jill by his side. "God willing, it's going to save a lot of lives." The Supreme Court on Thursday declared for the first time that the US Constitution protects an individual's right to carry a handgun in public for self-defence. Gun control has long been a divisive issue in the nation with several attempts to put new controls on gun sales failing time after time. The new legislation includes provisions to help states keep guns out of the hands of those deemed to be a danger to themselves or others and blocks gun sales to those convicted of abusing unmarried intimate partners. It does not ban sales of assault-style rifles or high-capacity magazines. The law does take some … [Read more...] about Biden signs bipartisan gun safety bill into law, takes swipe at Supreme Court
To Put The G7 Back In Business, Strike A New Deal On The Dollar
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Rarely have the stakes for a Group of Seven summit been so sky-high and the expectations for success so deep in the mud. Even the agenda for the June 26-28 confab in the Bavarian Alps suggests the G-7’s worldview is currently a million miles wide and one inch deep. Look, it’s grand that the host, Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, has put together a multifaceted program for the leaders of key industrialized democracies. Few can quibble with discussions on helping Ukraine and additional Russian sanctions. Topics from climate change to food security to gender equality are very worthy of focus. But the G-7’s best shot for impact and relevance on June 29, the day after the summit, is something almost completely absent from the pre-summit conversation: a grand deal on currencies. Granted, foreign-exchange issues tend to be handled a bit lower down the political food chain, by finance ministers and central bank … [Read more...] about To Put The G7 Back In Business, Strike A New Deal On The Dollar
Mr. Vice President, I’m Speaking.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Five words are being used by many to summarize the Vice Presidential Debate that took place last night at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. By all accounts, the debate was far less adversarial than the Presidential Debate held previously. That said, there were a series of interruptions, and one exchange, which took place early on in the evening, that particularly resonated with viewers. When Vice President Mike Pence interrupted during the segment focused on the coronavirus response, Sen. Kamala Harris turned to Pence and said, "Mr. Vice President, I'm speaking." When he continued to talk over her, she, with a smile, repeated once again, "I'm speaking." Almost immediately, clips of the exchange were being shared widely, and via social media, women began sharing "I'm speaking" posts, lauding the phrase's effectiveness. In the less than 24 hours since the event, Etsy creators and even political … [Read more...] about Mr. Vice President, I’m Speaking.

Bali G20: Last best chance to fix climate crisis
When Martin Luther King reminded us of “the fierce urgency of now,” he also warned that “there is such a thing as being too late.” On fixing the climate crisis, we are almost at that point. With record heat waves now raging across North America, Europe, and Asia; drought, wildfires, crop failures, and famine in some regions; unprecedented floods elsewhere; and record-high global ocean temperatures the last six years in a row, the summer of 2022 seems like we are all walking through the gates of hell. Perhaps the “fierce urgency” of this summer’s climate chaos will move governments to finally act. Despite 30 years of United Nations climate change conferences, global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, and the climate crisis continues to worsen. This November, the 27th United Nations climate conference (COP27) will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, and the Group of 20 Summit will be held in Bali, Indonesia. These government summits may be our last best chance to fix the … [Read more...] about Bali G20: Last best chance to fix climate crisis
India At G7 | Expectations from and support for India will rise rather than fall
(Representative image: Shutterstock) We need to look at India’s presence in the forthcoming G7 summit on June 26-27 beyond the positive hypes and negative hopes set by domestic constituencies and global narrative peddlers. On its own, there is nothing exclusive about this invitation. Apart from India, the German presidency has invited Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal, and South Africa to the summit to be held at Schloss Elmau, Bavaria. Yet, if some folks take Western pressures seriously (we don’t), India is expected to be on the back foot because it did not toe the G7 line and stood its own on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The dominant narrative today is that India needs to be punished. So far gone are these voices that global news agencies have forgotten basic journalism. They are mixing wishful thinking with facts, using the convenience of unnamed sources as cover. When they report that “ Germany is debating whether to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Group of … [Read more...] about India At G7 | Expectations from and support for India will rise rather than fall
Here Are The Billionaires With The Largest Twitter Following
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Elon Musk has gained 17 million Twitter followers since April, when he first announced plans to buy the social media company. But there is one billionaire who still has even more followers than he does. Oh, the power of an enormous Twitter following paired with an enormous fortune. Elon Musk—the world’s richest person—has 99.5 million Twitter followers who are exposed regularly to his rants and musings. He uses Twitter as a publicity tool (journalists regularly rush to cover whatever he says) and as a bully pulpit, complaining about regulators (including the Securities and Exchange Commission ), people he doesn’t like (that “pedo guy,” a term Musk used in 2019 to describe Vernon Unsworth, a British cave diver who helped rescue a trapped junior football team in Thailand. G7 summit kicks off under shadow of Ukraine war, stagflation risk
US President Joe Biden (right) being greeted by Bavaria Prime Minister Markus Soeder (centre) upon arriving at Munich Airport on June 25, 2022 ahead of the Group of Seven summit in Munich, Germany. - A + A SCHLOSS ELMAU (June 26): German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is set to welcome leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) rich democracies on Sunday to a three-day summit in the Bavarian Alps overshadowed by the war in Ukraine and its far-reaching consequences, from energy shortages to a food crisis. The summit takes place against a darker backdrop than last year when the British, Canadian, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and US leaders met for the first time since before the Covid-19 pandemic and vowed to build back better. Soaring global energy and food prices are hitting economic growth in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The United Nations warned on Friday of an "unprecedented global hunger crisis".
