- A + A (June 23): Opposition politicians in Singapore won’t support the government’s plan to proceed with a goods and services tax (GST) hike amid inflationary concerns. The Workers’ Party on Wednesday (June 22) said it “cannot support” the decision to raise the consumption-based tax and will “continue to argue” against any proposed increase. The statement, posted on the party’s Facebook page, came after Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the timing of the tiered tax hike won’t be revised despite concerns over mounting price pressures. The tax is set to rise to 8% from 7% in January next year and then to 9% in 2024. Inflation in the trade-reliant business hub has surged, leading the Monetary Authority of Singapore to tighten monetary policy three times in the past eight months. The core inflation print for May, to be announced on Thursday, is expected to climb further from a decade-high of 3.3% in April, according to a Bloomberg survey. Singapore widens tuberculosis checks after large cluster emerged
- A + A (June 25): Singapore imposed mandatory screening for tuberculosis in an apartment block after about 170 people tested positive for the infectious disease. Stallholders, shop owners and their employees who are located in the complex will also be tested, the Ministry of Health said in a statement on Friday (June 24). An earlier voluntary round of screening found about 30% of 574 residents and workers testing positive, and those who have not participated must now do so. The ministry said tuberculosis is endemic in Singapore, and is not uncommon in Singaporeans. The prevalence of tuberculosis infection is as high as 29% among those aged 70 to 79 years, and is curable. Its spread is also preventable, the government said. … [Read more...] about Singapore widens tuberculosis checks after large cluster emerged

Thailand News Today | Backlash over sloppy happy plant guidelines
The opposition will be going after the government for its botched happy plant decriminalisation and legalisation laws. Or, specifically, their lack of details and the loose ends left dangling for Thais and foreigners to navigate. Politics aside, the June 9 announcements about the C plant in Thailand were broadly misinterpreted to be a blanket legalisation of the plant and all of its derivatives. The actual details and legislation haven’t even been tabled in parliament for debate, so the opposition is now targeting the government over its botched announcements on, what some believe, is a crucial societal issue that requires a proper debate. The opposition parties, led by Pheu Thai and Move Forward, will likely focus on hot issues like underage addiction, school kids and drugs, illicit drug use in Thailand, perils of long-term use, dangers to society, among a myriad of topics. The topic also brings additional focus to the deputy PM and public health minister, Anutin … [Read more...] about Thailand News Today | Backlash over sloppy happy plant guidelines
