How Google Unified Its Products With A Humble Index Card
If you hadn’t noticed, every Google service has been trending toward a certain understated elegance. The company’s infamous era of championing 41 shades of blue is long over, as the company has learned to embrace clean lines, airy typography, and liberal white space across their platforms. But amidst implementing these long-established good design practices, Google rediscovered an old idea: index cards. advertisement advertisement Just like index and business cards of yore (or at least the late ’90s), Google’s cards are plain, white rectangles peppered with nothing more than a little bit of type and maybe a photo. Are cards the epitome of flat modernism, or are they subconscious skeuomorphism? Even Google’s designers debated this point when I posed the question. Either way, these piles of pixels are revolutionizing the way Google simplifies increasingly deep information. Google’s cards represent the biggest of data in the smallest of packages. Biden cleared to resume public events after negative Covid-19 test
Joe Biden - A + A WASHINGTON (Aug 7): US President Joe Biden tested negative for Covid-19 for a second consecutive day, ending more than two weeks spent mostly self-isolating at the White House. The latest antigen test for Biden, 79, came back negative on Sunday morning, presidential physician Kevin O'Connor said in a letter released by the White House. "He will safely return to public engagement and presidential travel," the doctor said. "I'm feeling great," Biden told reporters outside the White House. Biden's diagnosis, including a so-called rebound case after he received Pfizer Inc's antiviral drug Paxlovid, has hampered his political schedule ahead of midterm elections in November, although he has done a series of virtual events. Even before the doctor's letter was released, Biden headed from the White House to his beach home in Delaware on Sunday. On Monday, he and first lady Jill Biden plan to travel to Kentucky to visit communities hit by deadly … [Read more...] about Biden cleared to resume public events after negative Covid-19 test
Tax challenges and opportunities for the new administration
Based on the March 2022 Labor Force Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority, there are more than 17 million informal workers, including tiangge, ambulant and street vendors, plus over 1.3 million sari-sari stores that remain unregistered with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). Generally, they fall under the category of micro enterprises. However, under Revenue Regulation No. 11-2000, self-employed individuals with annual gross sales not exceeding P100,000 are classified as marginal income earners. While they may also apply for Barangay Micro Business Enterprises (BMBE) certification to avail of income tax exemption, they are exempted from: P500 annual registration fee; maintaining books of accounts and submitting audited financial statements; issuing official receipts; 12 percent value added tax (VAT) or 3 percent business (percentage) tax; and expanded withholding tax. Should we increase the income threshold to encourage the informal sector to register with BIR? The … [Read more...] about Tax challenges and opportunities for the new administration
FLP’s 21 scholars, 10 winners, and 5 fellows
Though I advised him that I did not campaign or vote for him, the late president Fidel V. Ramos still offered me to be his secretary of justice on June 17, 1992, before he assumed office on June 30, 1992. After I respectfully declined, he changed his offer to a seat in the Supreme Court. And after he named me to the Court, he never spoke or influenced me, in any manner, in the discharge of my duties. Indeed, a gentleman-patriot, he fully respected my independence and probity even when I voted against his known political wishes. More on him in another column. WITH CHIEF JUSTICE ALEXANDER G. GESMUNDO AS GUEST OF HONOR AND SPEAKER, the Foundation for Liberty and Prosperity (FLP) will award cash and plaques on Thursday, Aug. 11, to its new 21 law scholars, 10 winners of its dissertation writing contest, and five “Esmel” fellows taking master of business administration or MBA (or equivalent) major in entrepreneurship, sustainability, management, economics, or business law.
