REUTERS/Lukas Barth/Pool WASHINGTON — U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday signed a national security memorandum to fight illegal fishing, part of pledged efforts to help countries combat alleged violations by fishing fleets, including those of China. The White House said in a statement that it would also launch an alliance with Canada and the United Kingdom to “take urgent action” to improve monitoring, control, and surveillance in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. U.S. officials have vowed to introduce policies to better battle illegal fishing, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, as part of stepped up engagement with the region to counter China’s growing influence. Intolerant schools cause for alarm, but humane approach necessary: Experts
Dio Suhenda (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Tue, June 28 2022 The recent government crackdown on hardline Muslim mass organization Khilafatul Muslimin, which is thought to have either funded or is affiliated with a number of educational institutions throughout the country, has sown fresh concerns over the threat of intolerant education in schools. Authorities cracked down on the group, alleged to be looking to replace the state ideology of Pancasila with the caliphate, following a series of public outings by the group in Jakarta in late May. Police have now arrested two dozen members, including their leader Abdul Qadir Hasan Baraja, for violating the 2017 Mass Organization Law. Educators say the discovery of dozens of Islamic boarding schools operated by the Khilafatul Muslimin should be a cause for alarm, calling the government to increase monitoring and guidance of schools down to the grassroots level. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting … [Read more...] about Intolerant schools cause for alarm, but humane approach necessary: Experts

Who’s Going to Make the Cut?
Now is the time to start thinking about how to move your business forward. The process starts by forgetting about the past, because no one has ever succeeded in the past. However great "the good old days" were, they're gone forever and not coming back. As you start to reimagine your business -- not rebuild or restore it -- the hardest single issue is going to be people. Maybe that's always the case. And the hardest questions and most difficult choices are going to be about some of the most senior people in your business, those who've been there from the start. As I always like to remind my peers, gray hair is a sign of age, not necessarily of wisdom. But to be clear, this isn't about anyone's age as much as it's all about their energy, skill sets, and expected contributions to the new order. I realize it's a touchy conversation, but as someone who's personally been in the trenches for more than 55 years, I can tell you that it's never been a more critical one to have. … [Read more...] about Who’s Going to Make the Cut?
The State of the Nation: Hospitality industry struggling to cope despite borders reopening, brighter prospects
This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on June 20, 2022 - June 26, 2022. - A + A DESPITE the reopening of borders since April 1, when Malaysia allowed quarantine-free travel for fully-vaccinated travellers into the country, it will be some time before the hotel industry regains a strong footing following the debilitating lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. In fact, it may well take another year at least before operators can operate at their full capacities at pre-pandemic levels, Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners (MAHO) president Tan Sri Teo Chiang Hong tells The Edge. “Average occupancy rates are an estimated 30% to 50% of pre-pandemic levels,” says Teo, who is owner and director of One World Hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. He notes that resort destinations are seeing full occupancies while city hotels still face low occupancy. As at November 2020, a total of 204 tourism and hotel operators had shut down following the impact of the … [Read more...] about The State of the Nation: Hospitality industry struggling to cope despite borders reopening, brighter prospects
G7 leaders work to ‘starve’ Russia of oil money as Zelensky says he wants the war over by the end of the year
Telfs-Buchen, Austria (CNN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told G7 leaders during a virtual meeting Monday that he wants the war in Ukraine to end by the end of 2022, according to a source familiar with his remarks , as leaders worked to starve Russia of its oil revenues and mitigate the economic fallout of the conflict. The dual missions -- sustain support for Ukraine while easing economic pressures at home -- have defined this year's summit of leading democracies, held high in the Bavarian Alps. While largely united, the leaders are all facing their own political imperatives to see a momentum shift in the fighting and bring an end to the conflict quickly. To that end, leaders were nearing an agreement to try capping the price of Russian oil, depriving the country of revenues that have soared amid the global spike in energy prices. Details were still being ironed out, including whether the top buyers of Russian oil would agree to the limits, but US officials … [Read more...] about G7 leaders work to ‘starve’ Russia of oil money as Zelensky says he wants the war over by the end of the year

This Founder Has $236 Million From Investors Including Jay-Z. Here’s How She’s Gearing Up For Hyper-Growth
Amy Errett, chief executive of Madison Reed, the hair-color startup she founded in 2014, worked for the first decades of her career in finance and in venture capital . Despite those industries' reputations, it was within them that she carved out her signature leadership style, which she describes as "leading with love from an open heart." Foundationally, the style involves treating employees with respect, empowering their voices in decision-making, and showing up as her full, transparent, self. She tells Inc.'s What I Know podcast that "leading with heart" isn't some mushy concept. In fact, it's especially applicable when having tough conversations. "It's really true and authentic, including having to deliver bad news," she says. "I love you. So I am going to tell you the whole truth, right? I am not going to have a conversation that isn't direct, open, loving, from the intent of the heart." If this sounds a bit like parenting, it's not far off, Errett admits. … [Read more...] about This Founder Has $236 Million From Investors Including Jay-Z. Here’s How She’s Gearing Up For Hyper-Growth
