A milky white, stiletto-shaped mold is sitting on Amanda Parkes’s desk. It’s the beginnings of a project to restructure high heels to make the notoriously painful shoes more comfortable. “If men had to wear high heels, this would have been addressed 100 years ago,” says Parkes, the design director for the product, which comes by way of Thesis, a new shoe company founded by a former SpaceX employee. Next to that is half of a bra, a model for a new shape of memory polymer insert. When finished, instead of using an underwire, the garment will respond to body heat, molding to a woman’s shape. “It will be much more comfortable,” says Parkes. advertisement advertisement Those are just two of the projects Parkes has taken on as a fashion-tech consultant with her company Skinteractive Studios, which she founded in 2009 to help develop wearables. A product engineer by training, Parkes engages with both the conceptual and practical. She worked … [Read more...] about The Softer–And More Wearable–Future Of Wearables

Technology designed for women exploded in 2016, with new products hitting the market ranging from wearable trackers for expectant mothers to networking apps to help female professionals get ahead. “The online consumer market of women is a new phenomenon” in part because investors are waking up to the opportunity, says Anu Duggal, founding partner of the Female Founders Fund, a firm that invests in women-led startups. “The purchasing power of women is massive and becoming clearer.” advertisement advertisement Many of the female founders that made our list struggled for years to raise capital, but were able to convince investors in their vision through persistence and creativity (and of course, a solid business pitch). Miki Agrawal from Thinx, a period underwear maker, tells us she requested that one of her male investors wear a maxi pad during an entire meeting to get him to empathize with what women experience. Others like Morena Simatic, cofounder of … [Read more...] about The Top 10 Innovations That Made Women’s Lives Better In 2016
What if your morning run through a park could generate electricity, which could then charge batteries or maybe even power the phone you’re running with? If you’re wearing the right T-shirt, that might be a possibility. advertisement advertisement Researchers from the University of Málaga in Spain and the Italian Institute of Technology have designed a T-shirt that generates electricity from the temperature difference between the wearer’s body and their surroundings. That means the body heat coming off you when you run, walk, or play a sport—and the difference between that heat and the colder temperature of the surrounding air—could be transformed into thermal power. There are a lot of examples of thermal energy in our lives—the sun warming our atmosphere, a stove burner heating a pot of water to boil. But there are also a lot of examples of wasted warmth, or “waste heat,” which is all the unused heat let out into an … [Read more...] about This T-shirt uses your body heat to generate electricity
For a certain substrata of Twitter, Tuesday afternoon felt a lot like Schadenfreude Christmas. advertisement advertisement First came the news that Jacob Wohl, an atonal Trump rally chant made flesh, created a fake company with the hilarious moniker “Surefire Intelligence” to launch a smear campaign against Robert Mueller, and got caught in part because the company’s contact number went to his mom’s voicemail. (The Coen Brothers would be hard-pressed to invent a more inept scammer.) The cross-section of Twitter resigned to seeing Wohl’s increasingly bizarre and shrill defenses of the president broke out into swift celebration. “Jacob Wohl” became the top trending topic, a peak he had likely long aspired to reach, if perhaps not in the way he finally did. As if all this weren’t enough comeuppance for one day, then came these tweets from Kanye West. I introduced Candace to the person who made the logo and they didn’t want … [Read more...] about Kanye’s done with MAGA and Twitter is done with Kanye. A eulogy for the former artist.
