Vaccine skeptic Eric Clapton catches Covid-19, postpones concerts
Eric Clapton, who has railed against lockdowns and vaccines, has tested positive for Covid-19. The 77-year-old English singer has cancelled two upcoming concerts, Tuesday (May 17) in Zurich and Wednesday in Milan, after being diagnosed, his team announced Tuesday. “It is very frustrating that having avoided Covid throughout lockdown and throughout the period when travel restrictions have been in place Eric should have succumbed to Covid at this point in time, but we very much hope he will be sufficiently recovered by the end of the week to be able to perform the remainder of the planned performances,” his team said in a statement. The decision to cancel shows is in part to avoid infecting his band, crew, promoters, staff or audience. Drone pilot training courses to get cheaper as more schools open, says Scindia
The Unmanned Aircraft System Rules, 2021, was notified by the Centre on March 12. Drone pilot courses will get cheaper as the number of training schools increases in the country in the coming days, civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on May 17. Depending on the course and the institute, the fee ranges between Rs 30,000 to Rs 1 lakh. "As of now, there are 23 Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)-certified schools for drone pilot training. In the next four-five months, as the number of schools increase, I assure you that its fees will also decrease," Scindia said during an interaction with various stakeholders of the ecosystem, including manufacturers, farmers and academics. - A + A (May 18): The Russian unit of Alphabet Inc’s Google intends to file for bankruptcy after mounting fines led to its local bank account being frozen, in the latest sign of the Kremlin’s crackdown on foreign internet companies. Google’s local unit said it intends to apply to an arbitration court to declare it bankrupt in a notice posted Wednesday on the website of a Russian federal registry. The company has been “anticipating its own bankruptcy and impossibility to service monetary obligations” since March 22, the notice said. Google will continue to offer services for free inside Russia, including Google Search, YouTube, Gmail and Google Play, Interfax news service reported, citing a company representative. Ex-Minneapolis officer pleads guilty in George Floyd killing
By AMY FORLITI, STEVE KARNOWSKI and MOHAMED IBRAHIM MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A former Minneapolis police officer pleaded guilty Wednesday to a state charge of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd, admitting that he intentionally helped restrain the Black man in a way that created an unreasonable risk and caused his death. As part of Thomas Lane’s plea agreement, a more serious count of aiding and abetting second-degree unintentional murder will be dismissed. Lane and former Officers J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao have already been convicted on federal counts of willfully violating Floyd’s rights. While they have yet to be sentenced on the federal charges, Lane’s change of plea means he will avoid what could have been a lengthy state sentence if he was convicted of murder.
