Ukrainian women ask West to save trapped Mariupol defenders

May 16, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Ukrainian partners of Azovstal's soldiers of Marioupol, Olha Andrianova, Katerina Prokopenko and Hanna Naumenko pose during a photo session on May 15, 2022 in Paris. Their menfolk are the last pocket of resistance in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, holed up in a warren of underground tunnels and bunkers at the vast Azovstal steelworks under heavy Russian bombardment. But while their partners, all fighters in Ukraine's Azov regiment, make a last stand at Azovstal, Olha Andrianova, Hanna Naumenko and Kateryna Prokopenko are engaged in their own personal battle -- to get the West to intervene to save them. After leaving Kyiv on April 23, they stopped off at the Vatican, where they were granted a five-minute audience with Pope Francis , and also visited Poland and Germany. Now in France, the young women are determined to do whatever is necessary to help save the men's lives. "The more countries we go to, the more chances we have of finding a quick solution," said … [Read more...] about Ukrainian women ask West to save trapped Mariupol defenders

The US Bans Russian Energy Imports – Symbolically

March 11, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As Russia’s war in Ukraine intensifies, the Biden administration banned Russian oil and natural gas purchases. This move represents a departure from initial Western sanctions against the Kremlin, designed specifically to avoid interference in Russian energy flows – particularly to import-dependent Europe. Oil prices have skyrocketed since Ukraine was invaded on February 24, with Brent and WTI oil futures trading at around $117 and $114, respectively (down from a 13-year high of $130 earlier this week ), Biden reportedly had deliberated for days before imposing the embargo as higher gasoline prices hurt him and the Democratic party politically. Although the Biden-led initiative to sanction Russian oil sales is rather symbolic, it is still important. The US could produce all oil it needs, and what it can’t, it could import from North America. America has flirted with net-oil exporter status over the past few years … [Read more...] about The US Bans Russian Energy Imports – Symbolically

England’s Hospital Waiting List Grows Again To 6.36 Million

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin More patients than ever before are waiting for elective procedures in England, with the number in line for treatment hitting 6.36 million according to the latest figures. The data , which represents the size of the waiting list for surgeries and other planned treatments in March, is an increase of 180,000 on February's results . The overall waiting list has grown every month since May 2020, when it stood at 3.85 million. That figure isn't a perfect representation of the number of people waiting for treatments, as some patients will be counted more than once if they're on the list for multiple procedures. Planned care — which covers all manner of procedures from cataract surgery to hip replacements — continues to be hard-hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Hospitals across the country have been forced to pause and reconfigure elective care during times of particular pressure.
