Akio Toyoda - A + A TOKYO (June 24): Toyota Motor Corp's chief had lobbied the Japanese government to make clear it supported hybrid vehicles as much as battery electrics or face losing the auto industry's support, a senior lawmaker told a ruling party meeting. The lobbying by Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota and chairman of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) industry group, comes as the automaker faces increased scrutiny from green investors who said it has been slow to embrace battery-electric vehicles and pressed governments to slow a transition to them. Akira Amari, a former industry minister and a veteran member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), requested changes to the government's annual economic policy road map at a June 3 meeting, saying he spoke with Toyoda a day earlier, according to notes and audio of the meeting reviewed by Reuters. The final version of the document included a reference to "so-called electric-powered … [Read more...] about After pressure from Toyota chief, Japan emphasises support for hybrid vehicles

Forget SFFD Being Upset At Cruise, The Future For Emergency Vehicles With Robocars & e-VTOL Is Super Positive
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Recently I reported on the San Francisco Fire dept. being upset at how a Cruise robotaxi coming the other direction couldn’t clear out of that lane when the fire engine was blocked by a stopped garbage truck. Discussion suggest there was concern over whether cars like the Cruise were ready for driving on a road with emergency vehicles. While there may be some small issues to resolve, emergency crews should take heart. A future is possible where they will be able to respond to emergencies far better than they can today, thanks to robocars and other future technologies like e-VTOL aircraft. Robotaxi developers build simulations of situations on the road, including encountering emergency vehicles. They do thousands of variations of those situations to try to make sure their car will do well. When it doesn’t, they fix it. They may not get everything, but they will constantly improve as they learn — and one of the ways they … [Read more...] about Forget SFFD Being Upset At Cruise, The Future For Emergency Vehicles With Robocars & e-VTOL Is Super Positive
From Vietnam war to Russia-Ukraine conflict: Can a powerful picture change the world?
A local resident reacts in front of a destroyed school after a strike in the city of Bakhmut, eastern Ukrainian region of Donbas on June 8, 2022. (Image: AFP) Content warning: This article contains descriptions and pictures of gun violence, tragedy and war. The day after Nick Ut took the iconic picture of nine-year-old Phan Thi Kim Phuc running away from the Napalm explosion, was the first day of a year-long hospital stay for Kim. June 8, 1972, around 12.30 pm, Kim was fleeing down Highway 1, away from her bombed village Trang Bang when Ut saw her through smoke and fire as he was taking pictures with his Nikon camera. As she came closer, he switched to a Leica M2 – which is now in a museum in Washington D.C. – and through its viewfinder he saw Kim crying in pain as she ran naked. He took almost a roll full of pictures and noticed her skin coming off. Ut put his camera away and took her and the other kids to a local hospital in his car. Thus began a lifelong commitment … [Read more...] about From Vietnam war to Russia-Ukraine conflict: Can a powerful picture change the world?
Americans Are Suffering Record Pain At The Pump. Will Congress Provide Electric Vehicle Relief?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Drivers across the United States are suffering unprecedented pain at the pump, with national average prices spiking above $5 per gallon . Fortunately an inflation-busting option is ready to go – modeling shows electric vehicles save drivers thousands per year compared to internal combustion engines in most states. But these consumer-protection economics hinge upon the U.S. Senate passing legislation that has languished for months after passing the House of Representatives. The existing $7,500 federal EV tax credit cap of 200,000 vehicles sold has been surpassed by GM and Tesla TSLA while Ford, Nissan, and Toyota will likely exceed it this year. Without those extremely valuable incentives, EVs and billions in annual savings will slip out of reach for many families. If the Senate passes reconciliation legislation extending the EV tax credit cap for automakers and increases the federal tax credit to $10,000, it will … [Read more...] about Americans Are Suffering Record Pain At The Pump. The Ukrainian Military Is Changing Its Tactics With Bayraktar TB2 Drones
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin During the first four months of the Russia-Ukraine war, the “Most Valuable Player” award could readily go to the Bayraktar TB2 drone. This drone provided the Ukrainians with the necessary air power to repel the initial Russian assault and then slow the Russian advances in the Donbas region. Despite the numerous successes of the TB2 drone, reports indicate that their usage in the Donbas region has become limited due to a large number of Russian anti-aircraft systems. The importance of the TB2 drones to the Ukrainians cannot be overstated. According to Oryx , a blog that tracks the destruction of military equipment through open-source reports, these drones are credited with destroying the following: 6 armored fighting vehicles, 5 towed artillery, 1 multi-rocket launcher, 2 anti-aircraft guns, 10 helicopters, 6 naval ships, 3 command posts, 1 communication station, 2 logistics trains, and numerous resupply trucks. The … [Read more...] about The Ukrainian Military Is Changing Its Tactics With Bayraktar TB2 Drones
California Risks Missing Its Climate Targets. Here’s How It Can Get On Track And Add Billions In Economic Growth.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin California has been a global climate leader, inspiring other countries and states to adopt even stronger policies, but the Golden State has fallen off track for its own emissions reduction targets. For a state already experiencing extreme climate impacts, rapidly cutting planet-heating emissions is more than a matter of reputation—California’s very way of life is at stake. Unfortunately, the state’s recently released draft climate plan bets California’s future on unproven technologies—but it’s not too late for the state to get back on track. New Energy Innovation research shows a handful of smart climate policies using proven technologies would rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Accelerating climate ambition would also add billions to the state’s economy, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and protect residents from toxic air pollution. Renewing California’s climate leadership California passed its … [Read more...] about California Risks Missing Its Climate Targets. Here’s How It Can Get On Track And Add Billions In Economic Growth.
Tax body issues guidelines for securing websites, procuring IT services
Representative image. Days after several websites were hacked by foreign “hacktivists” to protest comments made against Prophet Mohammad, a government body responsible for financial regulations has come out with a list of cybersecurity norms to wall up against such attacks. In an internal advisory, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has asked the principal chief commissioner of customs, central tax and customs and others to host websites of all zones on National Informatics Centre’s Data Centre or on cloud infrastructure provided by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology-empanelled service providers. The advisory dated June 13 also said the design of websites should be along the guidelines drawn by NIC for Indian Government Websites (GIGW). “Website and data security is of paramount concern in the present times in view of increasing security threats. Hackers continuously attempt to explore security vulnerabilities available in the websites … [Read more...] about Tax body issues guidelines for securing websites, procuring IT services
Crude oil sell-off a bit overdone as prices could be ticking back up soon, says Vandana Hari of Vanda Insights
Brent crude futures slipped 3 cents to $113.09 a barrel by 0515 GMT, after rising as much as 1 percent earlier. Front-month prices tumbled 7.3 percent last week, their first weekly fall in five (Representative image) After shooting to near $123 per barrel last week amid various global factors, crude oil prices slid by as much as 6 percent or $11 to $112 per barrel on June 17. This was a sudden reversal from the steep climb in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, global travel opening up, and services reviving. Speaking to CNBC-TV18 on June 20, Vandana Hari, founder and CEO of Vanda Insights, said the correction was mainly due to two factors — Libya’s oil production being confirmed at 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) instead of the earlier expected 100,000 bpd; and tumble in United States markets due to sell-off in broader risk assets. “What happened on Friday (June 17) was quite late in the US session and quite a surprise,” Hari said.
