You'll reach a very small village; it’s like it’s the last village before you reach the end of the world,” says Pierre, the taxi driver who picks me up from Marseille train station. As we zip along the craggy coastline of France's second largest city, he tells me a little bit about Les Goudes, where I am headed, which is a district in south Marseille tucked in the Calanques National Park, a large rocky stretch of limestone cliffs scattered with coves that extends 200 square miles along the sea. We stop before Les Goudes village in front of a small glass door with pastel pink lettering indicating I’ve reached Tuba Club , the restaurant with rooms that's become a go-to for well-heeled travelers since it opened in summer 2020. The small clapboard building is combed with a corrugated roof like icing on a cake. Inside, there's a beachy fresco by artist Emmanuelle … [Read more...] about Tuba Club, South Of France’s Coolest Spot, Gets Hot New Resident Chefs

Friends at first sniff: People smelling alike do hit it off
INQUIRER.net stock images WASHINGTON — It’s often said that people who click right away share “chemistry.” This expression could be true in the literal sense, according to a new study published in the journal Science Advances on Friday, which finds people with similar body odors are more likely to hit it off as friends. “Nonhuman terrestrial mammals constantly sniff themselves and each other and, based on this, decide who is friend or foe,” wrote a group of researchers led by Inbal Ravreby at Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Since people seek friends who are similar to themselves, the team hypothesized that humans may smell themselves and others to subconsciously estimate body odor similarity and judge their compatibility. To find out, they set about collecting samples from pairs of same-sex, nonromantic friends who described themselves as having clicked at first sight, that is to say “where a sense of friendship was formed before extensive biographical information … [Read more...] about Friends at first sniff: People smelling alike do hit it off
Tiger and goat forge unlikely friendship in Russian zoo
MOSCOW — A goat sent to a Russian safari park as live prey for a Siberian tiger has instead befriended the big cat and the two have become inseparable in a story that has captivated Russians. Amur the tiger and Timur the goat now sleep in the same enclosure in the Primorsky safari park outside the Pacific port city of Vladivostok, and the pair eat and play together in the snow and this week even head-butted each other for fun. The story of the unusual friendship has touched hearts in Russia with the safari park releasing regular updates on the pair and planning to install webcams in their enclosure. Staff at the park say the male tiger, who has been given live animals to hunt and eat twice a week for three years, did not touch the billy goat when it entered the enclosure last month because the goat did not show any fear. “No one had taught the goat to be afraid of tigers,” the park said in a statement. Viral Video: Japanese Supercomputer Shows How Coronavirus Spreads In A Dining Setting
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revised its guidance to say that the Covid-19 virus can “linger in the air for minutes to hours” and occur between people spaced more than six feet apart. This followed a CDC study last month that found that adults with Covid-19 were twice as likely to have dined out at a restaurant within two weeks prior to being infected. A new simulation from the Fugaku supercomputer in Japan demonstrates how the seating arrangement can make a difference to how easily the coronavirus is transmitted to dining companions at the same table. Japanese researchers from Kobe University and the research giant Riken tasked Fugaku, the world’s fastest supercomputer, to model how the coronavirus spreads in a typical dining situation. The simulation shows the emission and flow of aerosol particles when four people are sitting a table and speaking … [Read more...] about Viral Video: Japanese Supercomputer Shows How Coronavirus Spreads In A Dining Setting
CDC Study: Adults With COVID-19 Twice As Likely To Have Dined Out At A Restaurant
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin During the pandemic, restaurant dining has proven to be a hard sell. One in four Americans (25%) do not feel comfortable dining out at all until a vaccine becomes available, according to a recent YouGov survey fielded for SevenRooms , a travel booking service. About the same number (23%) say they’ll continue with takeout or delivery for the rest of the year. Not even four in 10 Americans (38%) are “looking forward” to dining out in the next three months. And of that fraction, a considerably higher number say they prefer outdoor seating (42%) to indoors (29%). Now a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention appears to indicate that visiting establishments with on-site eating and drinking might elevate the risk of becoming infected with COVID-19. The CDC identified 314 symptomatic adults tested for COVID-19 at 11 different health care facilities across 10 US states: California, Colorado, … [Read more...] about CDC Study: Adults With COVID-19 Twice As Likely To Have Dined Out At A Restaurant
