Forget about Ping-Pong tables , free meals , and weekly happy hours . Boxed , an e-commerce platform that sells bulk groceries and household products at wholesale prices, is now paying for all full-time employees' weddings. Here's the back story. Marcel Graham, a 26-year-old Boxed employee who works at one of the company's fulfillment centers in New Jersey, was racing against time. Graham's mother is gravely ill and he wanted to get married to his fiancée as soon as possible so his mother could participate in the ceremony. Graham worked seven days a week, two shifts a day, to save his money. But the math suddenly wasn't adding up--he wasn't making enough to pay for his mother's medical bills and save for the wedding. At his work station earlier this month, Graham couldn't hold it in any longer and broke down. Chieh Huang, CEO and cofounder of Boxed, which is valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars, decided to do something. "F--- it, I'm gonna do … [Read more...] about Why Boxed Decided to Pay for Employee Weddings

What the Business Cycle is Telling us About a Recession
If you're looking for capitulation in 2022, it's in the bond market. And that tells you that investors' confidence in the global economy is very low. Inside the stock market, it's all about defense. Defensive stocks, which include big healthcare companies and dividend-paying value stocks, have been driving the gains. An index of global defensive stocks put together by Goldman Sachs, which is heavy in healthcare giants, has climbed to more than an 18-month high relative to the MSCI AC World Index. Inside the U.S., the defensive ETF ticker DEF has been outperforming the Spider ETF SPY all last week and all year. For market watchers, this feels a whole lot like a recession trade. While investors in the capital markets are battening the hatches for a recession, money in the private markets is also drying up. The value of venture capital deals in the U.S. dropped more than 25% in the second quarter to just $1 trillion, according to Dealogic . M&A activity in the United States … [Read more...] about What the Business Cycle is Telling us About a Recession

RI’s domestic workers more protected abroad than at home
Kornelius Purba (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Wed, June 29, 2022 Many Indonesians, including me, need to read the following quotation. Hopefully the remarks, which were made more than 2,000 years ago may help us shame ourselves for our outrage when Indonesian migrant workers are abused by their employers abroad, while we are actually often more brutal than those we condemn. “How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye’, when all the time there is a plank in your eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye,” this is from a very famous book quoting a very wise man describing how we humans are often genius in finding minor mistakes committed by others but not so smart when it comes to looking at our own misdeeds. Millions of migrant Indonesians risk their lives at the hands of overseas employers because at home they cannot find a better … [Read more...] about RI’s domestic workers more protected abroad than at home

He was reported to have made such remarks in his speech during the Malay Survival Congress on June 19 in Selangor. In addition, Mahathir contended that Malaysia was contented to win control over Sipadan and Ligitan from Indonesia while giving up a piece of rock -- “Pedra Branca” -- to Singapore. The former PM should have realized that although he is no longer the prime minister, he is still an influential politician and this speech of his would spark uneasiness among Malaysia’s nearest neighbors -- Singapore and Indonesia. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no … [Read more...] about Singapore and Riau Islands do not belong to Malaysia
