The Douglas County Republican Party condemns the state's red flag bill and Sheriff Tony Spurlock, who backs it, in a new resolution.House Bill 1177 would allow temporary seizure of guns from people deemed by a court to be a risk to themselves or others.Spurlock also is now the target of a possible recall, launched in February by attorney Robert Wareham of Highlands Ranch. The DougCo GOP's executive committee met Saturday, and the Republican Spurlock attended, but the panel nonetheless voted 18-13 to pass the resolution. It says HB 1177 "would deprive citizens of due process," that the 2019 version is worse than what was introduced in 2018 (and which the executive committee also condemned), and that the measure would violate the 2nd, 4th, 5th (and other) amendments to the U.S. Constitution. As for Spurlock, "a party which refuses to hold its own accountable will never succeed in holding its opposition accountable," the resolution says. One of Spurlock's deputies, Zack Parrish, 29, was … [Read more...] about Douglas County GOP condemns its own sheriff over red flag bill
Kiss those years of double-digit annual home price gains goodbye. Depreciation has made a comeback in Boulder, Denver and Douglas counties, foreshadowing more widespread declines in the months ahead, according to a report Tuesday from the Colorado Association of Realtors. The declines are not huge, at least for single-family homes, and the metro area as a whole still shows a modest gain. But the new year appears to have ushered in what some buyers have long waited for — lower home prices. “We are seeing a ton more properties come on the market, but not an increase in the number of sales,” said Matthew Leprino, a Denver-area Realtor. He said it is the first time Denver County has seen a decline in its year-over-year home price numbers in several years. “The median price for a Denver single-family home is now equal to that of March 2017 — $425,000,” he said. A year ago, the median price of a home sold in metro Denver was $430,000. The … [Read more...] about Home prices fall in Boulder, Denver and Douglas counties. Is it a blip, or a trend?
Not everyone is thrilled about it, but work on the 12.5-mile, $276 million C-470 Express Lanes expansion project is rolling forward in Douglas County this year. Mounds of churned-up earth that will make way for new tolled express lanes in both directions along the suburban thoroughfare can be seen alongside the roadway from Interstate 25 west to Broadway and beyond. The highway is scheduled to be closed in both directions between University Boulevard and Quebec Street overnight May 10, 11 and 12 to accommodate bridge-widening work. It will inconvenience countless motorists, residents and area business owners many more times before construction wraps up in 2019. There is another group that will be inconvenienced by project detours this year, but if you ask some of them, they’re happy transportation officials are prioritizing work—no matter how inconvenient—that will make them safer. The C-470 trail will be rerouted in two places this year so that it hugs … [Read more...] about C-470 project in Douglas County making safer way for bikes too
Two arrests in a counterfeiting case out of Long Tree. Three collars on an elaborate nationwide iPhone identity theft case that hit locally. A crackdown on a credit card cloning and skimming case out of Highlands Ranch. These are just some of the on-the-ground results already tallied by a retail fraud strike force formed fewer than three months ago in Douglas County. Dubbed the Financial Investigative Regional Strike Team — or FIRST — the group is made up of investigators from five different law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Secret Service. FIRST, which launched in mid-October and operates out of the Douglas County sheriff’s headquarters in Castle Rock, has the singular focus of chasing down the fraudsters and organized retail theft rings that cause misery for victims and cost stores millions of dollars a year. It is a unique example in Colorado of collaboration and information-sharing across jurisdictional boundaries and even state lines. … [Read more...] about Multi-agency “strike team” puts heat on retail thieves, fraudsters in Douglas County
