Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Cash has been crowned king yet again. Investors and savers are piling into cash as a safe haven from the banking turmoil that has rocked the industry these last few weeks. Since the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), investors have transferred over $300 billion into money market funds bringing the total to a record-breaking $5.4 trillion . Until recently, money market funds didn’t produce enough returns to lure investors away from the stock market or depositors away from savings accounts. For the last 10 years, the S&P 500 had an average yearly return of 9.82%. Compare that to Vanguard’s VMFXX 0.78% return and it’s no wonder catchy phrases like “cash is trash” caught on with investors. No too long ago, keeping more than three months of expenses in a savings account was considered unwise because of the opportunity cost compared to investing. However, nothing lasts forever. In times of market uncertainty and … [Read more...] about Savers And Investors Are Flocking To Money Market Funds.

SVB Capital Owned Pieces Of Top VC Firms. With A Sale Ongoing, Their Future Is In Flux
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Firms like a16z, Index and Sequoia can usually control who buys a stake in their blue-chip funds. But with SVB Capital for sale, they’re in a rare powerless position unless their stakes are split up for separate sale. Amid the many questions arising from the collapse and ongoing sale of Silicon Valley Bank, there is one that’s top of mind for many investors: what will happen to one of the bank’s “crown jewels,” its ownership stakes in some of tech’s best-known venture capital firms including Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, Index Ventures and Sequoia. Venture capital firms typically tightly control who can invest in their funds, and selling a stake usually requires approval by the firm itself. But the situation at SVB Capital, a subsidiary of SVB Financial Group (the former parent of SVB until the bank was put under FDIC control ), is unusual—and more complex. And it leaves the blue-chip VC firms in a rare position of … [Read more...] about SVB Capital Owned Pieces Of Top VC Firms. With A Sale Ongoing, Their Future Is In Flux
Are Multi-Strategy Hedge Funds Really Worth The Higher Fees? It Depends On Whom You Ask
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Long/ short equity has long been the most popular hedge fund strategy among investors, but that could be changing. After 2022's massive outflows for the strategy and the hedge fund industry overall, multi-strategy funds are catching up to long/ short equity. However, one expert is downplaying the increasing interest in multi-strategy hedge funds, suggesting that he could replicate the average multi-strategy fund using the S&P 500 and cash. Outflows from long/ short equity to multi-strategy In a recent white paper, Peltz International declared that multi-strategy hedge funds are close to surpassing long/ short equity as the largest hedge fund strategy. The firm reported that multi-strategy hedge funds have doubled their assets since 2011 and have been growing rapidly relative to industry assets. In 2010, multi-strategy funds accounted for 18.7% of total hedge fund industry assets. As of the third quarter of … [Read more...] about Are Multi-Strategy Hedge Funds Really Worth The Higher Fees? Now Is The Moment For Industrial Companies To Capitalize On Freed-Up Tech Talent
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A few years ago, I was leading an executive search for a blue chip, multi-billion dollar aerospace company. The executive my client wanted to hire was a high-flyer with massive CEO potential and had already received an offer from a major global tech company, which at the time was a difficult opportunity to turn down, especially for someone as passionate about technology as this executive was. Through some uphill and very direct conversations, the executive decided to walk away from the “big fish” and take a “risk” on becoming an innovative leader in the broader industrial manufacturing sector. I recently checked in with this executive, who is still at the company and on the CEO succession path, and he confirmed that it was an excellent move, citing his ability to move the needle in a much more measurable and visible way than he would have been able to at the pure-play tech company. He said to me, “I realized quickly that I was … [Read more...] about Now Is The Moment For Industrial Companies To Capitalize On Freed-Up Tech Talent
Tokenized Real-World Assets Are Bringing New Yield Opportunities To DeFi
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin What Happened Over the last few months, traditional funds and asset issuers have launched programs to tokenize alternative assets via public crypto networks. Recent asset issuances have renewed interest in bringing real-world assets (RWAs) on-chain, and galvanized new opportunities for yield generation within decentralized finance (DeFi). Private-equity firm Hamilton Lane partnered with Securitize, a digital asset issuance platform, to tokenize a portion of its $2.1 billion flagship equity fund on the Polygon network. The fund requires a minimum investment of $20,000, far below the typical minimum buy-in of $5 million for private-equity investors. Hamilton Lane is one of the largest private-equity managers, having invested over $37 billion in private markets in 2021. It manages $824 billion of assets. Similarly, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced Project Guardian, a pilot program to tokenize … [Read more...] about Tokenized Real-World Assets Are Bringing New Yield Opportunities To DeFi
Skin In The Venture Capital Game
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Michael Szalontay is a Co-founder and General Partner at Flashpoint , an international tech investment firm. “If you do not take risks for your opinion, you are nothing.” —Nassim Nicholas Taleb Venture capital (VC) is a complicated business with probability theory at its heart. Basically, you are swinging at the fences with a wide dispersion of potential outcomes and returns, just like in baseball—from home run to strikeout. “Skin in the game” alludes to the vested interest of the VC manager in his fund. As private equity and VC funds are invariably structured as partnerships, the manager’s participation in the equity at risk is determined by the commitment of the general partner (GP) of the fund as a share of total commitments. Historically, GP commitments tended to be 1% for tax reasons, as this was the minimum requirement set by the IRS to get favorable treatment as a fund . Even in these times, smart startups can get funded. Here’s how
There was a moment last spring when startup founders across the globe experienced a sudden collective whiplash. It was the Great Venture Capital Reset of 2022, when fundraising activity screeched to a halt after running fast and hot for the longest bull market in VC history. Untold numbers of in-progress funding rounds sputtered in the process, and every startup that had planned to raise in the second half of 2022 found a very different market waiting for them. Just about every VC in my network reports a slowdown in the months since. As Masha Bucher, founder and general partner at Day One Ventures , puts it: “Priced rounds are so rare now that they sometimes get oversubscribed.” With two full quarters worth of data, we can now put numbers to the anecdotes. Peter Walker, head of insights at Carta , reports only 714 combined seed and Series A rounds in the fourth quarter of 2022—the first quarter in which Carta tracked fewer than 1,000 rounds since 2020. Data from … [Read more...] about Even in these times, smart startups can get funded. Here’s how
Silicon Valley Bank & First Republic: Crisis Meets Opportunity
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In the $30 billion rescue attempt of First Republic on Friday, Too Big To Fail Banks led by J.P. Morgan Chase, Citi, and Bank of America BAC finally stepped up to help stave off a crisis. Days earlier, in the stunning government seizure of Silicon Valley Bank and crypto lender Signature Bank SBNY , the Fed, FDIC, and Treasury were the stars. But a separate cast of unsung heroes also was at work, and this shows what private enterprise can do. Soon after SVB’s shares took a tumble in the after hours market on Wednesday night, March 8, sending a wave of fear across thousands of customers, fintech firms started working to help cash-strapped startups meet payroll—and win new business for themselves. JP Morgan, Bank of America, Citi and other giants have always seemed reluctant to serve Silicon Valley tech startups that have limited collateral and who burn more cash than they make. In this crisis, the traditional banks … [Read more...] about Silicon Valley Bank & First Republic: Crisis Meets Opportunity
