Low Rhine deepens Germany’s energy crisis
An unloaded barge enters the inland port (Innenhafen) in Duisburg, western Germany, on August 9, 2022. (Photo by INA FASSBENDER / AFP) A hot, dry July made worse by climate change has raised the risk that the German economy could run aground as sinking Rhine waters make shipping along the river harder. The prospect of severe, longer-term limits to traffic spells a new headache for the industries lined up on the river’s banks and threatens to further strain Germany’s efforts to wean itself off Russian energy imports as coal counts among key cargo moved on the waterway. Roberto Spranzi, boss of DTG, a shipping cooperative, says the volumes that his fleet can carry are already limited by the unusually low water levels. “At the moment we have a capacity where, we have to use three or four vessels where we would normally need one,” Spranzi tells AFP. Pointing at the worrying ebb at the entrance to the inland port of Duisburg in western Germany, Spranzi notes that “currently it’s … [Read more...] about Low Rhine deepens Germany’s energy crisis
Alibaba’s Softbank Overhang Clarified As Foreigners Fret
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Key News Asian equities were a sea of red on light volumes as South Asia held up slightly better than North Asia following the US equities meltdown yesterday. After the Hong Kong close, Alibaba and Softbank issued statements after the latter reduced their position in the former to 14.6% from 23.7% by selling 242 million shares via derivative contracts. Basically, Softbank wrote/sold an in the money call to investment banks allowing the company to collect the proceeds and book a $34 billion gain. The banks would hedge themselves as they effectively sold the shares in the market. The key is Softbank said they wouldn’t do this again alleviating the risk of more shares being sold i.e. an overhang on the stock. Similar to what’s happening to Tencent as Prosus keeps selling shares but no guidance on when it will end. China’s July CPI was 2.7% versus an expected 2.9% and June’s 2.5% was driven by high pork prices while PPI was … [Read more...] about Alibaba’s Softbank Overhang Clarified As Foreigners Fret
3 “Cash Loaded” Funds Almost All Investors Miss (Yields Up To 8%)
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I’m always shocked when dividend investors ignore tech stocks. Which means I’m shocked a lot, because pretty well all income-seekers do it! That’s because most folks still think of technology as the home of profitless startups, crumbling crypto platforms or zero-dividend names like Tesla TSLA (TSLA) and Amazon AMZN .com (AMZN). But the truth is, big caps dominate the tech space, and on the whole, the sector is sitting on some of the biggest cash hoards on Wall Street. Apple AAPL (AAPL), of course, holds a legendary $202 billion. As of February, that amounted to more than 7% of the cash holdings of all S&P 500 companies! Alphabet, too, holds north of $160 billion. Microsoft MSFT ? $132 billion. The list goes on. The problem? These companies are in no hurry to hand that cash over to us dividend investors. All pay low (or no!) dividends. But there is a “backdoor” way for us to tap … [Read more...] about 3 “Cash Loaded” Funds Almost All Investors Miss (Yields Up To 8%)
