Bruce Brown’s 1966 classic, The Endless Summer, is perhaps the most iconic surf film of all-time, and is widely credited with turning South Africa’s Cape St. Francis into a global surf mecca. The film also gave many Westerners their first glimpse of wave riding in places like Ghana and Senegal. But since then, African surfing has been traditionally portrayed in surf media much the same way—as a destination for (mostly white) Western surfers to visit, and not a distinct culture of its own. advertisement advertisement South African pro surfer Mikey February has been working for years to challenge and change that perception with film projects with Vans. For instance, his ongoing “Sonic Souvenirs” series features not only surfing and surfers in South Africa and Ivory Coast, but also local music and art to go with it. In 2020, February and his wife, Zelti, launched Juju Surf Club , a nonprofit aiming to bring awareness and support to existing and emerging … [Read more...] about This bold new Vans collection aims to spotlight African surfing and culture

GM Outsells Tesla In July As Semiconductors & Clean Tech Outperform
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Key News Asian equities were largely higher on light volumes. Japan and Hong Kong were off slightly while India (Moharram), Pakistan (Ashura), and Singapore (National Day) were closed for the holiday. Tomorrow we have the highly anticipated July CPI print. I am referencing China's CPI, which is expected to be 2.9% (tongue in cheek). As an FYI, that other CPI print tomorrow in the US is expected at 8.7%. Taiwan is dominating the headlines as it's summertime, and nothing else is happening. Am I worried? No, as CNH, China's currency, and Chinese Treasuries are significant risk indicators that aren't freaking out, so nor am I. Also, check out FlightRadar24.com, as you'll notice a lot of flights into and out of Taipei's airport! Hong Kong's most heavily traded stocks by value were Tencent -0.47% as Prosus continues to sell shares to fund its buyback, Alibaba HK +0.9% following their filing with the Hong Kong Exchange to make … [Read more...] about GM Outsells Tesla In July As Semiconductors & Clean Tech Outperform

Microsoft vs. Meta: Who’s got the upper hand in the metaverse?
For the past year or so, we’ve been told the future of the internet is in the metaverse : a persistent, immersive, multiplayer, interoperable world that blurs the lines between the physical and digital. In reality, this vision of the metaverse is likely a long way away. According to Intel , realizing its potential will require an overhaul of the “entire plumbing of the internet.” advertisement advertisement While it’s uncertain to what extent we’ll achieve a metaverse akin to the world of Spielberg’s Ready Player One , it’s clear that the internet of the future will be far more immersive than that of the past. Two front-runners to define this vision of the future have emerged, with very different ideas of what it might look like: Meta and Microsoft. But who will come out on top? This immersive vision of the internet—with whole new worlds to get lost in that continue to evolve even after you’ve quit—is not a novel concept. 5 marketing concepts that need to be reexamined
ILLUSTRATIONBY RUTH MACAPAGAL There are fundamental concepts in marketing that remain relevant despite technology and changing consumer behaviors. This is important since what we know strongly influences what we do. Marketers (and entrepreneurs) need not wait for the consequences of a wrong action to influence new knowledge. Here is a list of five concepts marketers should look into to check if they have the right understanding of the business of marketing. 1. Needs and wants of the customers have to be identified First, most customers don’t even know what they actually need or want. They may know what they dislike but when it comes to new product design, it is still the domain of a company’s technical group, usually influenced by the company’s visionaries. For example, would the idea of an electronic blood pressure monitor come from hypertensive patients? Unlikely. The most they can do during the dominance of the manual blood pressure monitor era is to cite the pain points … [Read more...] about 5 marketing concepts that need to be reexamined
Electric Vehicles | Save the battery, save the future
Representative image (Source: Reuters) The growth trajectory of electric vehicles (EVs) is critically hinged on the evolution of battery technology. Batteries need to be lighter, cheaper, quicker to charge, and safer which will instil confidence in consumers to switch to EVs. Yet, despite the strides made, batteries still constitute around 40-50 percent of the vehicle's final cost — a critical barrier to the uptake of EVs. Adding to the challenge, almost all EVs in India run on imported batteries. The number of imported lithium-ion batteries quadrupled between 2016 and 2019 – from 175 million in 2016-17 to 713 million in 2018-19. In 2018-19, India imported batteries worth $1.23 billion. To reduce this dependence, and incentivise local businesses to invest in scaling up the manufacturing of advanced chemistry cells, the Government of India (GOI) announced a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme with an outlay of Rs 18,100 crore. The Government of India received 10 … [Read more...] about Electric Vehicles | Save the battery, save the future

Photo from Kauswagan LGU CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—A town mayor in Lanao del Norte province has been absolved of responsibility for the alleged forcible eviction almost nine years ago of three families from a 12-hectare coconut estate that is the subject of an ownership dispute. Because of the eviction, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte Mayor Rommel Arnado faced three counts of grave coercion charges, along with two workers of the local government. In two rulings–on April 26, 2019 and on October 14, 2019–the Sandiganbayan found Arnado guilty of the charges and ordered him imprisoned for up to three years and six months for every count of the offense. But in a March 21, 2022 ruling, which was received by the parties only on August 3, the Supreme Court’s Second Division said that contrary to the findings of the Sandiganbayan, there was not enough evidence to convict Arnado. The decision was penned by Associate Justice Rodil Zalameda. In … [Read more...] about Lanao del Norte town mayor off the hook in eviction of land claimants
