Rescue groups in Ipoh praise anti-pet dumping law

May 17, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

ANIMAL welfare groups in Ipoh eagerly welcome the move by the government to enforce the pet abandonment law. Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals president Ricky Soong said although the law was long overdue, it was definitely a good start. He said pet abandonment occurred when people adopt or buy pets without any planning. Soong: Make microchip mandatory to facilitate the identification of owners who abandon their pets. “After a while, the owners might start to dislike the pet or get tired of it and eventually, they would find ways to abandon it. “It is time the law is enforced but there must be efforts to locate the owners as well,” he said. Soong was responding to a recent statement by Veterinary Services Department director- general Datuk Dr Norlizan Mohd Noor, which indicated that the department would soon be enforcing regulations of the 2021-2030 National Animal Welfare Strategic Plan, including one related to pet or animal abandonment. Ukraine Stories Podcast: NPR Veterans Deliver A Tour De Force Of Narrative Journalism

May 14, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s been almost three months now since Russia invaded Ukraine , and much of the latest news coverage has been depressingly predictable. It feels like every day, foreign correspondents share word of yet another Russian atrocity . Or, of outnumbered Ukrainian defenders still hanging on. Of a new show of defiance from President Zelenskyy. More countries, like the US, sending aid packages and weapons. More fighting, more dying. Journalists tasked with reporting this story certainly want to keep readers and audiences back home invested and caring about what happens. But rather than wrap their arms around the bigness and the battles that are part of this bloody geopolitical conflict roiling part of Europe, a group of NPR veterans decided to focus on the small, and the personal. Instead of covering the war the same way as most everyone else, the journalists launched a podcast in partnership with Spotify to … [Read more...] about Ukraine Stories Podcast: NPR Veterans Deliver A Tour De Force Of Narrative Journalism

Mattis To Confront Russia Over Apparent Weapons Shipments To Taliban

April 24, 2017 by dailycaller.com

Secretary of Defense James Mattis pledged Monday to confront Russia over allegations that Moscow has been funneling weapons to the Taliban in Afghanistan. Army Gen. John Nicholson, the top commander for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said he would “not refute” the claim that Russia is funneling weapons to Taliban insurgents at a news conference in Kabul, The Associated Press reports. Secretary of Defense James Mattis, also in Afghanistan on an unannounced visit, pledged that the U.S. would start conversations with Russia on the subject of weapons funneling. “We’ll engage with Russia diplomatically,” Mattis said, according to The Associated Press . “We’ll do so where we can, but we’re going to have to confront Russia where what they’re doing is contrary to international law or denying the sovereignty of other countries.” “For example, any weapons being funneled here from a foreign country would be a violation of international law,” Mattis added. A senior military official … [Read more...] about Mattis To Confront Russia Over Apparent Weapons Shipments To Taliban

Remembering Bloody May 1992

May 18, 2022 by www.bangkokpost.com

Soldiers arrest a demonstrator at the height of Black May uprising on May 19, 1992. The protests were staged against post-coup prime minister Suchinda Kraprayoon, who was not elected to the position. Bangkok Post This month commemorates the 30-year anniversary of the Bloody May events in 1992 that witnessed extensive violence against street demonstrators and the subsequent fall of the military-linked government that had come to power due to the 1991 coup. What then are some of the lessons to remember, resonating from the past to the present and the future? The 1991 coup was instigated by a group of military leaders to overturn the elected civilian government on the basis of alleged corruption. It also annulled the constitution, but the junta which came to power was willing to put in place a civilian leader as prime minister in the interim. However, the subsequent revised constitution opened the door to a controlled Senate and an unelected prime minister. Although the key coup … [Read more...] about Remembering Bloody May 1992

Why corporate America is afraid to talk about abortion

May 16, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

These days, corporations make public proclamations after just about every significant news event. After George Floyd was murdered, tech companies, including Microsoft and Apple, made pledges of $3.8 billion to diversify their hiring practices and better support Black workers. Airbnb, Google, and others rushed to announce matching donations to support relief efforts when Russia invaded Ukraine this February. And back in 2013, hundreds of companies , among them Starbucks and Facebook (now Meta), urged the Supreme Court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. advertisement advertisement This is part of a series of articles on the business case for abortion access. See the full package here. So why is it that, even amid the mounting pace of state legislation and recent Supreme Court leak , companies have had so little to say about abortion? Bitcoin Trailblazer Raises Capital To Create Interplanetary Cryptocurrency

May 4, 2022 by www.forbes.com

LedgerX co-founder Paul Chou is building on the sale of the company he created by raising capital for a new kind of cryptocurrency that can be spent on Earth, the Moon, Mars and beyond. I t’s just before midnight on a rainy autumn Friday. Paul Chou and his entourage dodge puddles on the runway of the Teterboro Airport in New Jersey as they board a Gulfstream private jet bound for Las Vegas. The flight attendant cracks open a bottle of champagne and with a nod welcomes the passengers aboard. The girls disappear into the back and emerge minutes later wearing sequined cocktail dresses and feather boas. Sensing she’s in for a party, the attendant offers a round of tequila shots just as the inertia from the plane taking off to the Bellagio Hotel & Casino forces her laughing into her seat. Ostensibly, Chou, 38, is celebrating not only his birthday but the sale for an undisclosed amount of LedgerX, the ground-breaking bitcoin derivatives firm he co-founded with his wife in … [Read more...] about Bitcoin Trailblazer Raises Capital To Create Interplanetary Cryptocurrency

DeSantis Wants State Government To Control Disney World’s Special District

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The Florida government could assume control of the special district that oversees Walt Disney World, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said Monday, after he and state Republicans abruptly voted to wrest control of the district away from Disney and spooked local lawmakers over possibly having to cover the costs. Key Facts DeSantis and the Republican-controlled legislature enacted a law in April dissolving the Reedy Creek Improvement District after Disney opposed HB 1557—known to critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” law—which restricts classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity. Responding to criticism that getting rid of Reedy Creek could burden local county governments and raise residents’ taxes, DeSantis suggested it’s “more likely” that the state would take control to “make sure that we’re able to impose the law and make sure we’re collecting the taxes.” There are a “whole bunch of things” … [Read more...] about DeSantis Wants State Government To Control Disney World’s Special District

Global challenges for 2022

January 9, 2022 by koreajoongangdaily.joins.com

Nam Jeong-ho The author is a columnist of the JoongAng Ilbo. A 21st century event as powerful as the inventions of letters, the wheel or steam engine — or as devastating as a world war — could be the breaking out of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Its spread transformed the centuries-old practice of reporting to work into working from home. The international order is not free from the cataclysmic shift. As we move into the third year of the pandemic, let’s take a look at global challenges ahead. Most noticeable is the retreat of globalization and the shutting down of borders, which wreaked havoc on international exchanges and multinational enterprises. Globalization on the political, economic and cultural fronts suddenly came to a halt. The biggest victim of the pandemic was the tourism industry, which saw the number of global tourists drop to 381 million in 2020 from 1.46 billion in 2019. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates the resulting losses … [Read more...] about Global challenges for 2022
