Travellers landing at Changi report missing luggage following chaos at origin airports
SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/Asia News Network): An increasing number of travellers flying into Singapore are reporting lost or damaged luggage as a result of issues at their airport of departure amid a global manpower crunch, said Changi Airport's main ground handler Sats. Some travellers also have to wait longer to collect their luggage after arrival, but service targets have otherwise been met for most incoming flights, Sats told The Straits Times. Several airports worldwide - London's Heathrow among them - have been struggling with snaking queues and luggage issues as air travel strongly rebounds. But while Singapore and Asia have largely avoided chaotic airport scenes, industry experts have warned that the region could face similar issues as air travel volumes pick up. The Sats spokesman said: "Issues at origin airports are causing a ripple effect on us and our passengers. "We have noticed an increase in enquiries on missing and damaged luggage from travellers arriving … [Read more...] about Travellers landing at Changi report missing luggage following chaos at origin airports

How Avelo Airlines is building an ultra low-cost carrier that’s actually good
A new domestic airline took flight in California in April 2021. Avelo Airlines , an ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC) founded by aviation industry veteran Andrew Levy, carried its first passengers on a 75-minute trip from Burbank to Santa Rosa, in California wine country, aboard a 189-seat Boeing 737. For introductory fares that started at $19 one way along the route, fliers were offered a seat . . . but not much else. There was no in-flight Wi-Fi or entertainment system. Carry ons and checked bags both cost extra, as did reserving a seat. The only food or drink on offer was a free mini bottle of water. advertisement advertisement In just over a year, Avelo has grown from 3 Boeing 737-800s to a fleet of 10 737s that include Next Gens, with at least 4 more aircraft expected to join by year’s end. The airline now offers more than 225 short-hop flights a week (the average trip lasts less than two hours) into more than two dozen destinations, all of them … [Read more...] about How Avelo Airlines is building an ultra low-cost carrier that’s actually good

Airline Reliability Won’t Improve Until Air Traffic Control Staffs Up, Too
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Recently, the U.S. airline industry has had a hard time operating reliably over busy travel periods, including this summer so far. Staffing shortages have been noted as the cause for most, and pilot availability especially has been challenging . For a busy summer, airlines would usually try to operate a high utilization, all planes flying schedule. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg recently had a call with major airline CEOs to talk about what the industry could do to be more reliable. With the July 4 holiday right on us, it is reasonable to ask when, if not now, customers can expect airlines to be reliable again. The problem is that airlines cannot fix this problem by themselves. Yes, they can do a better job scheduling flights that actually have the crew to operate, but they also fly their planes in airspace and into airports with their own constraints. Without all three coordinating and staffing properly, … [Read more...] about Airline Reliability Won’t Improve Until Air Traffic Control Staffs Up, Too
Opinion: Airlines are facing pressure from all directions
Tom Stalnaker is an Oliver Wyman partner and the firm's global aviation sector lead. Khalid Usman is a partner in Oliver Wyman's transportation and services practice specializing in airline economics. Andrew Buchanan is a vice president in Oliver Wyman's transportation and services practice. The opinions expressed in this commentary are their own. After two years of enduring masks, social distancing and quarantines, there's not much that can come between consumers and their summer vacations this year. Outbreaks of Covid-19 no longer seem to stop them from traveling — and based on recent demand for air travel, neither do higher prices for getaways. But while consumers may have gotten over fears of Covid, the economy is still riddled with its impacts — including high fuel prices , disrupted supply chains, and a labor market filled with workers hoping to work at least part of the time from home. For airlines, busy summer travel is turning into a season of operational … [Read more...] about Opinion: Airlines are facing pressure from all directions
Nearly 1,500 bags stuck at Paris airport as glitch hits amid travel boom
The Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. Airlines worked Saturday to deliver luggage to passengers around the world after a technical breakdown left at least 1,500 bags stuck at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, the latest of several tangles hitting travelers this summer. The airports baggage sorting system had a technical malfunction Friday that caused 15 flights to depart without luggage, leaving about 1,500 bags on the ground, according to the airport operating company. The airport handled about 1,300 flights overall Friday, the operator said. Union activists said many more passengers flew without their bags, apparently because of knock-on effects from the original breakdown. It came as airport workers are on strike at French airports to demand more hiring and more pay to keep up with high global inflation. Because of the strike, aviation authorities canceled 17% of flights out of the Paris airports Friday morning, and another 14% were canceled Saturday. Passengers on … [Read more...] about Nearly 1,500 bags stuck at Paris airport as glitch hits amid travel boom
