Nicknamed “the Pride of Africa,” Kenya Airways is the flag carrier of Kenya and a member of SkyTeam Alliance, operating in 53 cities around the world. It recently launched a direct flight from New York to Nairobi, with plans to up to 20 new destinations in Africa, Europe, and Asia in the coming years. While Kenya Airways hasn’t won any major awards, it’s consistently ranked as one of the best African airlines and I’d heard rave reviews from friends who had flown the airline. With a flight from Nairobi, Kenya to Dubai, UAE coming up, I booked a ticket on the airline’s flagship Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner to see how it stacked up. While Kenya Airways isn’t quite at the level of top flag carriers like Etihad,Emirates, or Singapore Airlines for luxury, I found that it offers high-quality, friendly service, meals on most routes, complimentary alcohol, and a fleet of planes that is getting newer with the addition of eight 787 Dreamliners starting … [Read more...] about I flew economy class on Kenya Airways’ flagship 787 Dreamliner to see if ‘the Pride of Africa’ stacks up to the world’s top airlines

0 Have your say Every few years or so there are restaurants in Leeds that capture the imagination of the public. The ‘go-to’ places that everyone is talking about and aspire to visit. It seems that Tattu at Minerva House, East Parade is now that place.Opened in 2017, it quickly became one of the trendiest joints in town, winning awards (including the Best World Restaurant at the 2017 Oliver Awards) and gaining a reputation for excellent food, decor and service. To call Tattu a Chinese restaurant would be to perhaps confuse the issue. Dinner for two with drinks came to £109.45 and we actually had some of the cheapest dishes on the menu. The bill included £9.95 for a 10 per cent discretionary service charge of … [Read more...] about Tattu in Leeds’s most instagrammed restaurant… but does the food live up to the hype?

VIVOBAREFOOT Barefoot shoe industry leader Vivobarefoot is now producing a line of shoes made from recycled water bottles ($75 - $210). Each pair of shoes will be made from 17 recycled water bottles. Left to their own devices, those bottles would take ~400 years to decompose. Vivobarefoot hopes this line will combat our desensitization to pollution. It's part of a larger trend. Increasingly sustainable production is a goal for Vivobarefoot, with hints at new materials coming down the pipeline. At the heart of the barefoot shoe movement is a belief that nature, ultimately, knows best. The argument commonly includes the sentiment that there is no machine as elegant nor as intelligent as the human body — a mechanism … [Read more...] about An eco-friendly footwear startup is turning plastic bottles into beautiful sneakers — each pair diverts 17 plastic bottles from landfills and rolls up to the size of a pair of socks
Google is officially celebrating its 20th bithday this Thursday. But though its namesake search engine launched in 1998, the then-tiny startup didn’t get around to hiring any interns until 1999. When it did, Jen Fitzpatrick was one of them. Then she became one of the company’s first women engineers. Over the subsequent years, she cofounded Google’s user experience team and worked on search, advertising, Google News, and other products. In 2014, she took on overarching responsibility for Google Maps and Local as Google’s VP for geo. I recently spoke with Fitzpatrick about why she joined Google, why she stayed, and the challenges and opportunities of her current job. This interview has been edited for publication. “My parents thought I was crazy” Fast Company: Let’s start at the beginning. How did you come to work at Google? Jen Fitzpatrick: I was a student in the Computer Science department at Stanford at the time, and first heard of Google as … [Read more...] about How I went from Google intern to the head of Google Maps
