Davos, Switzerland (CNN Business) When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke by video to a packed room at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he thanked the West for its solidarity against Russia. But he also issued a warning to political leaders and business executives: Don't lose your nerve. "I would only wish you not lose this feeling of unity," he said, calling again for maximum pressure on Moscow. Three months after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, leaders from Europe and the United States emphasize that they remain committed to sticking with unprecedented sanctions in an attempt to force President Vladimir Putin to pull its troops out. But as the cost of food and fuel jumps — fanning political protests and public discontent around the world, and increasing the risk of a recession — maintaining a consensus could prove increasingly challenging. "I am very worried about what a recession in Europe would do to European resolve … [Read more...] about The West united against Russia. Will its nerve hold as prices soar?

Destination Spirits: You’ll Soon Be Able To Purchase Your Own Barrel Of Bourbon At The Only U.S. Hotel Distillery
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Open since 1927, the Historic Cavalier Hotel & Beach Club has fulfilled its namesake in many ways–including its reigning title as the first and only distillery in an American hotel. It all started back in 2010 when Virginia Beach native, Andrew Yancey, sought a location for his craft distillery, prioritizing the region’s prime oceanfront. Simultaneously, Bruce Thompson, CEO and founder of Gold Key PHR, was leading the renovation of the Cavalier Hotel (with an unbeatable oceanfront address). “I took the business plan and idea to Mr. Thompson and he instantly said, ‘let’s do it,’” Yancey told Forbes. The distillery became Tarnished Truth Distilling Company , at the center of the Historic Cavalier Hotel, providing handcrafted spirits like bourbon, bourbon cream, vodka, gin, moonshine and canned cocktails for guest tours, in the tasting room and at the onsite restaurants. Pro-Russia Former President Of Moldova Placed Under House Arrest
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Moldovan authorities placed the country’s former president and Kremlin ally Igor Dodon under house arrest for 30 days Thursday, the Associated Press and Reuters report, and Dodon suggests legal actions against him are politically motivated amid swirling fears in Moldova of extending Russian influence. Key Facts During his house arrest, prosecutors will investigate allegations against Dodon for treason and corruption, and he was detained Tuesday on suspicion of those two charges and graft, according to Elena Cazacov, Moldova’s senior anti-corruption prosecutor, though she did not specify if the treason charges are related to Dodon’s pro-Russian sentiments. Dodon, who served as Moldova’s president from 2016 to 2020, denies any wrongdoing, and told reporters the arrest was the result of a “political order” from his pro-European Union presidential successor Maia Sandu, according to Reuters. … [Read more...] about Pro-Russia Former President Of Moldova Placed Under House Arrest
Blinken says China strategy is about rules-based order, not ‘new Cold War’
- A + A WASHINGTON (May 26): The United States does not seek to sever China from the global economy, but wants Beijing to adhere to international rules, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a long-awaited speech on Thursday on US strategy to address China's rise as a great power. Washington will not block China from growing its economy or try to change Beijing's political system, Blinken said, but it will defend international law and institutions that maintain peace and security and make it possible for countries, including the United States and China, to coexist, he said. "We are not looking for conflict or a new Cold War. To the contrary, we're determined to avoid both," Blinken said in the 45-minute speech at George Washington University, which covered the gamut of the most contentious issues in bilateral ties. US-China relations sank to their lowest level in decades under the Trump administration and have soured further under President Joe Biden, who … [Read more...] about Blinken says China strategy is about rules-based order, not ‘new Cold War’
U.S. seizes Iranian oil cargo near Greek island – sources
ATHENS/LONDON (Reuters) -The United States has confiscated an Iranian oil cargo held on a Russian-operated ship near Greece and will send the cargo to the United States aboard another vessel, three sources familiar with the matter said. Greek authorities last month impounded the Iranian-flagged Pegas, with 19 Russian crew members on board, near the coast of the southern island of Evia due to EU sanctions. They said the ship was impounded as part of EU sanctions on Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. However the vessel was later released due to confusion about sanctions over its owners. The tanker, renamed Lana on March 1 and flying the Iranian flag since May 1, has remained near Greek waters since then. It was previously Russian-flagged. A source at Greece's shipping ministry said on Thursday that the U.S. Department of Justice had "informed Greece that the cargo on the vessel is Iranian oil". "The cargo has been transferred to another ship that was hired by the U.S.," the … [Read more...] about U.S. seizes Iranian oil cargo near Greek island – sources
Monkeypox spreading through sex, but not an STI
This handout photo taken in the year 2001 and received on May 23, 2022 from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German federal government agency and research institute responsible for disease control and prevention, shows a coloured electron-microscopic capture of the monkeypox virus. (Photo: AFP) For years, the dating application Grindr has doled out sexual health tips to its more than 11 million users. Now, the app, which serves the gay, bisexual and transgender community, is using its platform to get the word out about monkeypox, a virus that has long been endemic in parts of Africa but has recently spread to countries including the United States and the United Kingdom. Monkeypox is characterised by clusters of blister-like rashes, which health officials say has led to misdiagnosing the disease as common sexually transmitted infections. The virus also appears to be spreading in much the same way as STIs: through close, intimate contact. But repeated misdiagnoses could allow … [Read more...] about Monkeypox spreading through sex, but not an STI
Analysis: Left-wing Colombian candidate plans drug war shakeup
BOGOTA (Reuters) - Leading Colombian presidential candidate Gustavo Petro is roundly critical of the U.S.-led war on drugs and has questioned the extradition of a drug kingpin, views that may herald a shakeup of how the Andean nation battles the narcotics industry. Petro points out that despite billions of dollars in security spending and decades of U.S. pressure to reduce drug production, Colombia remains a top global supplier of cocaine and the site of bloody drug violence. A left-wing senator who was once the mayor of Bogota, Petro has about 40% support ahead of the May 29 election. He is expected to face a runoff vote. Petro decried the extradition this month of the accused leader of the Clan del Golfo cartel, Dairo Antonio Usuga. He also more broadly questions the effectiveness of extradition, a legal tool Washington considers a powerful deterrent to crime. "Extradition: it merits a discussion - a review of the figures - to see if what's been done for 40 years has … [Read more...] about Analysis: Left-wing Colombian candidate plans drug war shakeup

Joby receives FAA nod to start air taxi services commercially
- A + A (May 26): Joby Aviation Inc said on Thursday it had received a certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that would allow it to kick start its air-taxi operations commercially. Although the certification gives the necessary clearance and is a significant milestone, the company still has some regulatory hurdles to clear before its five-seater aircraft can legally fly passengers. The FAA's Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate is among the three regulatory approvals critical for Joby's planned launch of all-electric aerial ridesharing service in 2024. The certification will let Joby operate its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft as an air taxi service in cities and communities across United States. In February, Joby's piloted prototype aircraft met with an accident during a flight test at its base in California but no injuries were reported. Earlier this month, FAA said it had shifted course on its approach to approving … [Read more...] about Joby receives FAA nod to start air taxi services commercially
The Business Case For Nurturing Mental Health Awareness In And Outside Of The Workplace
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The month of May is a time of renewal and nurturing new growth. Nowhere is that more obvious than on farms and fields of Nebraska, as another growing season begins. May is also Mental Health Awareness month, which you may be surprised to learn has been observed since 1949. It was established by the National Alliance on Mental Illness to fight the stigma, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families. An argument can be made that at no time has the need been greater than now to bring awareness—both in and outside of the workplace—to mental health. Data compiled by the Pew Charitable Trusts indicates that more than 47,000 people die by suicide each year in the United States, making it the 12 th leading cause of death in the country. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a 25% increase in mental health disorders … [Read more...] about The Business Case For Nurturing Mental Health Awareness In And Outside Of The Workplace
