MAPUTO (Reuters) - The United Nations will grant Mozambique and the Comoros Islands $13 million (10 million pounds) in emergency funds to help provide food and water and repair damage to infrastructure, the organisation said late on Sunday, after the second cyclone in a month slammed into the region. Cyclone Kenneth crashed into the northern province of the southern African nation on Thursday just as it was recovering from Cyclone Idai that hit further south last month. Idai, the worst tropical storm to hit the region in decades, moved into neighbouring Zimbabwe and Malawi, killing more than 1,000 people. Weather experts are warning that Kenneth could dump twice as much rain on northern Mozambique as Idai did. It has already killed five people as it unleashed heavy rains and flooding that has seen rivers burst their banks and smash whole villages. The United Nations Human Rights Council has issued a statement decrying Saudi Arabia’s human rights violations, aimed at its most recent actions. The statement (via Aljazeera) was signed by 36 countries, including all 28 members of the European Union on Thursday.This is the first public rebuke of Saudi Arabia since the Council formed in 2006 to address and protect human rights globally. The United Nations says Mauritania in northwest Africa urgently needs funds to deal with a growing refugee crisis. Thousands of people are arriving from neighbouring Mali to escape an extreme interpretation of Islam and inter-ethnic violence. Mbera refugee camp in Mauritania represents one of the few possibilities for civilians fleeing the ongoing conflict in northern and central Mali. The camp is located in the far South East of Mauritania, 60 kilometres away from the border. Over the past six years, it has grown to host 55,000 refugees. Newcomers have decreased, but have never stopped. There were almost 6,000 arrivals during. Fadela Novak from UNHCR in Mauritania said: "We are simply not receiving the funds that we need. In UNHCR Mauritania we had 15 percent of the needs covered until 2018. WFP had 5 percent of their needs for the general food distribution of the month of December covered. Five per cent. Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has warned the UN Security Council, during its open debate in New York on Tuesday, Jan 22, that Israel`s illegal settlements on the occupied land of Palestine should immediately be ended. She also emphasized that Palestine possesses both natural and legal rights to become the United Nations` permanent member.
