Biden administration to move forward with plan to stretch monkeypox vaccine doses

August 9, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) The Biden administration is preparing to move forward with a plan to stretch the limited supply of monkeypox vaccine doses that would allow providers to use one-fifth as much per shot, two people familiar with the plans said. The Biden administration is set to announce a new emergency declaration as early as Tuesday afternoon that would enable providers to inject one-fifth of the currently authorized dose into the skin, rather than a full dose into underlying fat. The move was first reported by the New York Times. Change in monkeypox vaccine injection method could mean more doses but may not be easy, experts say The move comes less than a week after the Biden administration declared monkeypox a public health emergency, which gives the US Food and Drug Administration and other government health agencies more flexibility to fight the spread of the virus. FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf said last week the FDA was considering a … [Read more...] about Biden administration to move forward with plan to stretch monkeypox vaccine doses

August 8, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) Data obtained by CNN from New York's largest health-care provider indicates you're very unlikely to become severely ill with Covid-19 if you're under age 60, up to date on your Covid-19 vaccines and don't have underlying health problems, backing up a government plan expected to be announced this week that will ease up on coronavirus restrictions . If you're young, healthy and vaccinated, "you're going to be in a pretty good place," said Dr. William Schaffner, a vaccine adviser to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "You're going to be well-protected." CDC expected to ease Covid-19 recommendations, including for schools, as soon as this week The data from Northwell Health shows that of the nearly 2,000 people hospitalized there for Covid-19 in May, June and July, about 80% were over 60. Nearly 90% had an underlying health problem such as hypertension or diabetes. Vaccination status was also critically important. … [Read more...] about Under 60, healthy, vaccinated and boosted? ‘You’re in a pretty good place’ with Covid-19

Better Solutions For Rx Problems

August 8, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The reconciliation bill Democrats in Congress are about to pass will impose price controls on prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries (although they are couched in terms of price negotiation). Critics note that the measure would lead to fewer new drugs , fewer cures, more avoidable deaths, and higher drug prices for the private sector. University of Chicago economist Tom Philipson estimates that because of the price controls there will be 135 fewer new drugs in the next two decades – causing a loss of 331.5 million life-years in the U.S. That is a reduction in life spans about 31 times as large as from Covid-19 to date! Still, public opinion polls show high approval for the proposal. Why is that? In all likelihood it’s because voters realize there are problems that need solving. Here are some better solutions. Give Medicare enrollees access to rational insurance. In a proper insurance … [Read more...] about Better Solutions For Rx Problems

Soaring inflation cools PH Q2 GDP growth to 7.4%

August 10, 2022 by business.inquirer.net

Accelerating inflation has cooled the Philippines’ second-quarter economic growth to 7.4 percent, below market expectations, the government reported on Tuesday. Gross domestic product (GDP) expansion during the April-to-June period was lower than 8.2 percent a quarter ago and 12.1 percent a year ago, National Statistician Dennis Mapa said in a press briefing. The majority of economists watching the Philippines had projected a sustained above 8-percent growth for the second quarter. Also, Mapa said second-quarter GDP or the total goods and services produced in the country was smaller than the first-quarter output by 0.1 percent. “Transportation and storage, manufacturing, human health and social work activities were the top contributors to the [quarter-on-quarter] decline,” the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said in a statement. Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan nonetheless noted that the Philippines was the second-fastest growing economy in emerging … [Read more...] about Soaring inflation cools PH Q2 GDP growth to 7.4%

In crowded city races, Denver’s new fair election fund will face first test

August 9, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

Overhauling Denver’s campaign finance rules was popular with voters in 2018. More than 70% of Denverites who cast ballots that year voted for Referred Measure 2E. The sweeping change to the city’s campaign rules ratcheted down contribution limits for candidates seeking every seat from mayor to the city auditor, banned direct corporate and union campaign contributions and established a fair elections fund to provide public financing for candidates who agreed to abide by even lower contribution limits and other rules. Participate in the fair elections fund and receive a 9-to-1 public funding match on contributions from Denver residents between $5 and $50. In other words, a $50 donation becomes $500 with taxpayer money so long as the donor hails from the city and county. A lot has happened since then. First, the measure’s backers struck a deal with the City Council to delay the law’s effective date until after the 2019 municipal election instead of trying to enact the changes … [Read more...] about In crowded city races, Denver’s new fair election fund will face first test

BIZ BUZZ: Awaiting Marcos’ mining moves

August 10, 2022 by business.inquirer.net

Mining firms heaved a huge sigh of relief following Malacañang’s policy pronouncement that the government will ramp up the development of the industry to shore up the economy. Miners in Zambales, in particular, must have also felt vindicated by the recent audit conducted by the Mines Geosciences Bureau (MGB) that they passed with flying colors. According to reports, these mining companies—Benguet Corp. Nickel Mines, Eramen Minerals Inc., LNL Archipelago Minerals Inc. and Zambales Diversified Metals Corp.—got an aggregate score of 97.86 last year from 93.07 the previous year. They were assessed for safety and health, environment and social development management performance. Veteran stockbroker and now Eagle Securities senior consultant Den Somera told Biz Buzz that the Marcos administration’s policy is most welcome. “The industry has suffered immeasurable losses because of the successive shutdowns,” he said. “I hope that the present government will follow through with this … [Read more...] about BIZ BUZZ: Awaiting Marcos’ mining moves

Biden signs chips bill, unleashing subsidies for US production

August 10, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (Aug 9): President Joe Biden signed into law a broad competition Bill on Tuesday that includes about US$52 billion to boost domestic semiconductor research and development, calling it a “once-in-a-generation investment in America itself”. “We need to make these chips here in America to bring down everyday costs and create jobs,” said Biden at a signing ceremony for the CHIPS and Science Act on the White House South Lawn, joined by executives from US semiconductor firms and congressional leaders. Biden said he had visited the US facility where Javelin missiles were made and said the Bill would make the nation less reliant on other countries to provide the advanced chips needed for those weapons systems, as well as other products. “Unfortunately, we produce 0% of these advanced chips and China is trying to move way ahead of us to manufacture these sophisticated chips as well,” said Biden. “It’s no wonder the Chinese Communist Party actively lobbied US … [Read more...] about Biden signs chips bill, unleashing subsidies for US production

Thousands Of Cattle Buried, Flattened In Mass Graves At Landfill

July 26, 2022 by dailycaller.com

At least 2,100 cattle have died from heat stress in Southwest Kansas this summer, leading cattle providers to either bury the corpses or flatten them in landfills, according to Reuters. At least four major cattle providers, Cattle Empire, Friona Industries, NextGen Cattle and Clark County Feeders, have buried cattle in unlined graves on their property, collectively burying over 600 cattle, according to state documents reviewed by Reuters . Landfill workers used loading equipment with steel wheels to flatten an estimated 2,000 cattle carcasses to eight inches, and mixed the bodies into the Seward County Landfill, located in Liberal, Kansas, according to Reuters. Normally, the cows would be processed into pet food or fertilizer, but processing plants were overwhelmed this summer by the large number of deaths, according to Reuters.
