Russia Ukraine conflict: The fine line between misreporting and propaganda about Ukraine
Sadly, we are seeing exaggerations and economy with the truth in the reports on the ongoing war in Ukraine. (Illustration by Suneesh K.) Cataclysmic global events have a long history of bringing out the best and the worst of news reporting. It isn’t any different today in the midst of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia . Much of the reporting has been brave and moving. Sadly, there’s also been news bordering on downright fabrication . Little, it would seem, has changed since the Great Moon Hoax of August 1835 when the New York-based paper The Sun carried a series of six reports about how English astronomer Sir John Herschel, using the biggest telescope ever built, had established that there was an alien civilization on the moon. The Sun claimed that Herschel had sighted vegetation, “brown quadrupeds”, and “large winged creatures, wholly unlike any kind of birds.” The writer of the story later claimed that it was meant to be satirical but by then enough Americans had bought … [Read more...] about Russia Ukraine conflict: The fine line between misreporting and propaganda about Ukraine

Ukraine conflict hurting palm oil supplies, says Ahold Delhaize CEO
- A + A LONDON (June 22): Sustainable palm oil is becoming harder to find as food manufacturers use it to replace sunflower oil sourced from Ukraine and to meet environmental goals, Ahold Delhaize's CEO told Reuters . Palm oil, whose production is known for devastating rainforests in Indonesia and Malaysia, has for decades been a public relations problem for the retail and consumer goods industry. Several companies, from Pepsico to Unilever and P&G have tried to distance themselves from shopper backlash, setting ambitious goals to make their palm oil supply chains sustainable. Ahold — the owner of more than 20 retail brands including Albert Heijn in the Netherlands and Stop & Shop in the United States — said it only relies on sustainable palm oil, which is becoming harder to source. "As the sunflower oil from Ukraine or Russia fell away, those countries have 60% lower production there. People are looking for replacing oils and, of course, there's more … [Read more...] about Ukraine conflict hurting palm oil supplies, says Ahold Delhaize CEO
‘Into the light’: Ukraine’s Zelenskiy looks to EU offer as Russian missiles rain down
- A + A KYIV/KHARKIV, Ukraine (June 22): Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday hailed the European Union's expected offer of candidate status for his battle-weary nation as Russian forces pounded Ukraine's second biggest city Kharkiv and the eastern Donbas region. European leaders will formally set Ukraine on the long road to EU membership at a summit in Brussels on Thursday. Though mainly symbolic, the move will help lift national morale at a very difficult time in a four-month conflict that has killed thousands, displaced millions and flattened towns and cities. The war has also had a massive impact on the global economy and European security arrangements, driving up gas, oil and food prices, pushing the EU to reduce its heavy reliance on Russian energy and prompting Finland and Sweden to seek NATO membership. The EU will temporarily shift back to coal to cope with dwindling Russian gas flows without derailing longer term climate goals, an EU … [Read more...] about ‘Into the light’: Ukraine’s Zelenskiy looks to EU offer as Russian missiles rain down
Beachgoers brave rockets in East Ukraine
Local residents walk on the deserted beach of Sloviansk on June 22, 2022 as Russian frontline is only about 10 kilometers away and the Ukrainian armed forces said that Moscow’s troops are carrying out systematic firing in order to resume an offensive on Sloviansk. AFP SLOVIANSK , Ukraine— With its white sand, changing cubicles and clear water, the beach at Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine looks tempting. There’s just one problem: the nearby bangs of rockets and missiles. The lakeside resort is close to one of the most active fronts in the war with Russia, to the north of Sloviansk, where Ukrainian troops firing from woods and villages are seeking to halt Moscow’s advance. But that doesn’t dissuade some beachgoers. “We just came here to walk around and take some snaps,” says Kostyantyn, 40, strolling around wearing wraparound sunglasses and shorts. “We wanted (to swim) but it’s too cold,” he adds as the sunbaked region has a rare cloudy day. “A beach is a beach,” he says, … [Read more...] about Beachgoers brave rockets in East Ukraine
Battle for Donbas twin cities reaches ‘fearsome climax’, says Ukraine
KYIV (Reuters) - President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Moscow's massive air and artillery attacks were aimed at destroying the entire Donbas region and urged Ukraine's allies to accelerate the shipment of heavy weapons to match Russia on the battlefield. The fight for the twin cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk in Ukraine's Luhansk region is "entering a sort of fearsome climax", said Oleksiy Arestovych, adviser to Zelenskiy. Russia is seeking to capture both Luhansk and Donetsk, which make up the Donbas region - the nation's industrial heartland. On the diplomatic front, European leaders on Thursday will formally set Ukraine on the long road to EU membership at a summit in Brussels. Though mainly symbolic, the move will help lift morale after four-months of bloody conflict that has killed thousands, displaced millions and destroyed cities. Ukraine to begin first trial of Russian soldier accused of rape
KYIV (Reuters) - Ukraine is expected on Thursday to hold a preliminary hearing in its first trial of a Russian soldier charged with raping a Ukrainian woman during Russia's invasion, the first of what could be dozens of such cases. The suspect, Mikhail Romanov, 32, who is not in Ukrainian custody and will be tried in absentia, is accused of murdering a civilian in the Kyiv capital region on March 9 and then repeatedly raping the man's wife, according to court files. Russia's Defence Ministry did not immediately respond to a written request for comment, and Reuters was unable to reach the soldier. Moscow has denied allegations of war crimes. Romanov is accused of raping a 33-year-old woman after he and another Russian soldier shot her husband Oleksiy at point blank in the village of Bohdanivka to the northeast of Kyiv. The two soldiers then left and later returned twice more to rape her, the court files said. The identity of the second soldier had not been established.
