CBS reported Sunday that the network is updating a new documentary, “Arming Ukraine,” after it interviewed a witness who claimed many of the weapons sent to the nation from the U.S. never reach the front lines. One small quote on U.S. military aid from Blue/Yellow nonprofit founder Jonas Ohman sparked international outrage over the weekend. “Like 30% of it reaches its final destination,” Ohman told whoever was behind the CBS cameras at some point in April during filming. CBS used Ohman’s quote to promote “Arming Ukraine” on social media, and Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba went ballistic. Kuleba accused the network of misleading a huge audience with Ohman’s statistical claim. He said that CBS was sharing “unsubstantiated evidence” and “damaging trust,” and he demanded an internal investigation into who enabled the interview to be part of the documentary, and why. Opinion: Biden’s Afghanistan exit decision looks even worse a year later
Peter Bergen is CNN's national security analyst, a vice president at New America and a professor of practice at Arizona State University. (CNN) In 1961, after a CIA-backed invasion of Cuba failed spectacularly, President John F. Kennedy said of the Bay of Pigs fiasco, "Victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan." Peter Bergen Last week, President Joe Biden took a victory lap when he announced that the US had tracked down and killed its most wanted terrorist, al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was living in a house in Kabul, Afghanistan. Don't expect a similar celebration on August 30, the first anniversary of the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, which ended the longest war in American history. Any realistic assessment of that action shows that it … [Read more...] about Opinion: Biden’s Afghanistan exit decision looks even worse a year later

Russia Threatens, EU Reduces, US Industry Helps To Untangle The Natural Gas War In Europe.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Both oil and gas exported from Russia bring in significant revenue that can be used to support the Russian war in Ukraine. But the export revenue from oil sales is much greate r than export revenue from gas sales. If the West stops buying oil this really hurts Russia – more than if the West stopped buying gas. Back in May, the EU agreed to ban all Russian oil imports by the end of 2022, at least those that are delivered by sea. That was a good move. Russia threatens to cut gas supplies to the European Union. Russia has realized that cutting natural gas doesn’t affect their export revenue (like oil does) but it affects the economies of EU countries a lot more. Russia supplied the EU with 40% of its gas last year , with Germany, Italy, and Netherlands the top three importers in actual volumes of gas. Germany had imported more than 50% of its gas from Russia via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline. By the end of June, … [Read more...] about Russia Threatens, EU Reduces, US Industry Helps To Untangle The Natural Gas War In Europe.
H1 trade deficit widens to $29.79B
The country’s trade deficit widened to $29.79 billion at the end of the first half of the year from $17.95 billion last year, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority, with the gap hitting another monthly high in June. National Statistician Dennis Mapa on Tuesday confirmed that the June trade deficit amounting to $5.84 billion was the biggest monthly gap on record. Last June, imports climbed 26 percent year-on-year to $12.49 billion, while exports growth slowed to just 1 percent as sales of Philippine-made goods overseas reached $6.64 billion. The country’s chief economist, however, is not worried about the yawning trade deficit, as long as the growth in imports supported domestic investments and infrastructure. President Marcos’ economic managers had projected 18-percent merchandise imports growth exceeding a 7-percent increase in exports this year. The wide trade gap had resulted in a current account deficit as the country had to shell out more dollars to pay for … [Read more...] about H1 trade deficit widens to $29.79B
Soaring inflation cools PH Q2 GDP growth to 7.4%
Accelerating inflation has cooled the Philippines’ second-quarter economic growth to 7.4 percent, below market expectations, the government reported on Tuesday. Gross domestic product (GDP) expansion during the April-to-June period was lower than 8.2 percent a quarter ago and 12.1 percent a year ago, National Statistician Dennis Mapa said in a press briefing. The majority of economists watching the Philippines had projected a sustained above 8-percent growth for the second quarter. Also, Mapa said second-quarter GDP or the total goods and services produced in the country was smaller than the first-quarter output by 0.1 percent. “Transportation and storage, manufacturing, human health and social work activities were the top contributors to the [quarter-on-quarter] decline,” the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said in a statement. Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan nonetheless noted that the Philippines was the second-fastest growing economy in emerging … [Read more...] about Soaring inflation cools PH Q2 GDP growth to 7.4%
Why the rise of precision agriculture exposes our food systems to new threats
Farmers are adopting precision agriculture , using data collected by GPS, satellite imagery, internet-connected sensors, and other technologies to farm more efficiently. While these practices could help increase crop yields and reduce costs, the technology behind the practices is creating opportunities for extremists, terrorists, and adversarial governments to attack farming machinery, with the aim of disrupting food production. advertisement Food producers around the world have been under increasing pressure, a problem exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and rising fuel and fertilizer costs. Farmers are trying to produce more food but with fewer resources, pushing the food production system toward its breaking point . In this environment, it’s understandable that many U.S. farmers are turning to modern information technologies to support decision-making and operations in managing crop production. These precision agriculture practices lead to more efficient use … [Read more...] about Why the rise of precision agriculture exposes our food systems to new threats
‘Unacceptable Situation’: Russia ‘Temporarily’ Blocks Nuclear Weapons Inspections
Russia announced Monday it will “temporarily” suspend U.S. inspections of nuclear weapons sites allowed under a 2011 bilateral treaty that aims to check the U.S.-Russia arms race back to the Cold War. U.S. officials wanted to resume two-way inspections shortly under the Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (New START Treaty), after inspections initially ceased in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Wall Street Journal reported . Russia said travel restrictions placed by the U.S. in retaliation for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine prevent Russian teams from resuming travel to U.S. nuclear facilities, necessitating a “temporary” exemption. “Our goal is to bring an end to this unacceptable situation and ensure the functioning of all mechanisms in the Treaty in strict conformity with the principles of parity and equality of the parties, as was implied when it was agreed upon and entered into force,” the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs … [Read more...] about ‘Unacceptable Situation’: Russia ‘Temporarily’ Blocks Nuclear Weapons Inspections
