When we talk about inclusion today, we think of identity markers such as race, class, ability, and sexual orientation. But another important consideration is neurodiversity, which refers to the different ways in which people’s brains interact with the world around them. This facet of inclusion is gaining traction, but there is still a lot to be done in terms of designing workplaces that not just accommodate, but also nurture, neurodivergent employees. advertisement advertisement The full scope of neurodivergence is still under debate, but it includes a number of psychological profiles, with autism, dyslexia, and ADHD being prominent examples. It’s estimated that between 10 and 20% of the global adult population are neurodivergent, but with a steadily increasing number of diagnoses across the world, it’s clear that there are more neurodivergent people in the workforce than we may have initially thought. So, what should businesses and team leaders be … [Read more...] about These management changes for neurodivergent employees make work more accessible for everyone

Inside Didi’s US$60b crash that changed China tech forever
- A + A (June 30): It was an unusually frigid December weekend when Cheng Wei summoned his inner circle to his Beijing office. The founder of Didi Global Inc, dressed entirely in black, told his lieutenants to slash spending by a fifth in 2022 and begin layoffs after staff return from Lunar New Year vacations. He delivered his bombshell flanked by a giant Powerpoint slide that read: “Don’t live with illusions. Face reality.” “We had a tough year,” said the reserved billionaire known as Will, who that day seemed even gloomier than normal, according to people briefed on the gathering. “But next year will be even tougher.” That sombre gathering encapsulated what many in the room already suspected — the ride-hailing champion once feted for running Uber Technologies Inc out of China was no more. In its place was a defeated shell worth a fifth of its value at the peak, bleeding users, blocked from raising funds for cherished projects — and whose executives were constantly … [Read more...] about Inside Didi’s US$60b crash that changed China tech forever

These quotes from lesser-known entrepreneurs (e.g., not Mark Cuban or Richard Branson) offer some insight into starting a company. They can serve as some motivation for your day. 1. "How you climb a mountain is more important than reaching the top." Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia 2. "I don't care if you succeed or fail, if you are Bill Gates or an unknown entrepreneur who gave everything to make it work but didn't manage to pull through. The important distinction is whether you risked everything, put your life on the line, made commitments to investors, employees, customers and friends, and tried--against all the forces in the world that try to keep new ideas down--to make something new." Chris Dixon, the co-founder Hunch 3. This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on June 20, 2022 - June 26, 2022. - A + A ALL eyes are on RHB Banking Group’s newly minted group managing director (MD) and group CEO Mohd Rashid Mohamad as he steers the fourth-largest banking group by assets forward in a tough operating landscape. “It’s very challenging, especially now in a fast-changing market environment, and as we face potential risks such as geopolitical and inflationary,” acknowledges Rashid in his first exclusive interview as group MD/CEO. Competition has intensified, given new entrants into the market, which are not just new banks but also technology companies that compete for the same pie. Rashid adds that this has partly affected the profitability of the industry, along with many other factors. He notes that banks globally no longer see “high ROEs” as before. For RHB Bank Bhd, its return on equity (ROE) in the past 10 financial years hit a high of 13.4% in FY2012 before … [Read more...] about Cover Story: RHB’s Game Plan in ‘fast-changing’ new normal

This article first appeared in City & Country, The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on June 20, 2022 - June 26, 2022. - A + A The rental and occupancy levels of office space in KL city are anticipated to see downward pressure, as a result of substantial incoming supply and low occupancy in office buildings this year. The occupancy level in KL fringe, however, is expected to remain relatively stable, driven by a wider pool of tenants/occupiers and high-quality decentralised offices, particularly in areas with ease of accessibility and adequate transport links. Meanwhile, the Selangor office market will remain resilient with more leasing activities expected, especially for buildings with Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status and Grade A buildings, says Knight Frank Malaysia executive director of corporate services Teh Young Khean in presenting The Edge /Knight Frank Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Office Monitor 1Q2022. How Stumptown Coffee Pours a Little Obsession Into Every Cup
Duane Sorenson is one of those guys who takes his coffee very seriously-- very seriously. "At four or five, I used to just dump tons of cream and sugar into the coffee," he says. Thus began a lifelong obsession with finding the perfect cup of joe. Throughout high school and college, Sorenson worked as a barista, eventually dropping out in his senior year to study the craft of roasting at Lighthouse Roasters in Seattle. Enthralled with the shop's handcrafted approach, he continued roasting for several more years. In 1998, when he was just 26, Sorenson decided to strike out on his own. With visions of launching a hip independent coffee shop , he splurged on a cast iron Probat roaster from the 1920s and moved down to Portland--a city he'd always admired for its skateboard and coffee scenes. The path wasn't easy. Sorenson worked night after night as a bartender at Horse Brass Pub, spending his days and his paychecks equipping the space he'd secured. One night, … [Read more...] about How Stumptown Coffee Pours a Little Obsession Into Every Cup
The Best Advice You May Never Get
When you're running a business everyone has advice. Some is good, some not so much. But there's one piece of advice few people will ever get. Yet, far too many entrepreneurs desperately need to hear it. I was one of them. "Suddenly it felt as though we were navigating blind; straining just to see beyond the bow." In my case it came from a chance encounter during one of the toughest moments in my entrepreneurial journey. Our Inc 500 Company was starting to get the attention of potential acquirers. We'd had a few offers to sell but we were having way too much fun. It was Y2K; the eve of a new millennium. Within eighteen months the party was over. The dotcom crash of 2000 and the attacks of 9/11 tore through the economy and gutted the tech industry. Suddenly it felt as though we were navigating blind; straining just to see beyond the bow. Stressing Innovation Like most tech companies at the time, I was trying to hold onto my best people, restructure … [Read more...] about The Best Advice You May Never Get
6 Martin Luther King Quotes to Inspire Business Success
As you might surmise from my last name or headshot, I don't know what it means to be African American in the United States. Still, I've found tremendous inspiration from the words of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. over the course of my career, as some of his quotes can be quite helpful in growing your business: "Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend." This quote contains such an important lesson about leadership. It is so incredibly easy in business to think about how to get revenge on people who have slighted you, but that is an incredibly exhausting way to spend your time. Instead, take that time and invest it in turning counterproductive relationships into positive ones. "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" Truly one of the more simple and yet insightful quotes from Dr. King, it is also a great tenet of business. Sure, it's possible to get rich while trampling on others along the … [Read more...] about 6 Martin Luther King Quotes to Inspire Business Success
