Elon Musk’s wild 24 hours: Twitter deal setbacks, Dogecoin hype, and a Tesla employee lawsuit

June 22, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Even by Elon Musk’s exaggerated definition of weird, the past 24 hours or so have been more than a bit peculiar. advertisement advertisement On Tuesday alone, Musk stoked investor fears at an economic forum; both dissed cryptocurrency and pumped it up; swung the ax at his flagship company while the board and shareholders of the company he’s chasing voted on whether they wanted the deal to proceed; and is having to deal with at least two court filings. It is, by any typical measure, a completely bonkers series of events. Even for Musk, who has practically made a personal brand out of controversy. Here’s a quick recap of today’s revelations about the SpaceX CEO. advertisement He stirred up Twitter drama, just as the company’s board takes a vote Right before the Twitter board of directors unanimously recommended to shareholders that they approve Musk’s $44 billion purchase of the company, Musk laid out a series of … [Read more...] about Elon Musk’s wild 24 hours: Twitter deal setbacks, Dogecoin hype, and a Tesla employee lawsuit

Chinese EV stocks are all the rage, trouncing Tesla

June 25, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (June 25): Shares in China’s electric-vehicle (EV) makers are trouncing global industry leader Tesla Inc, bolstered by Beijing’s consumption incentives and heavy dip-buying from investors. American depository receipts of Nio Inc, XPeng Inc and Li Auto Inc have surged at least 64% each over the past month to be among the top gainers in Chinese stocks traded in the US. The sharp rally reflects improving sentiment following a months-long slump due to worries over high valuation and supply bottlenecks. Their gains easily beat Tesla’s 17% advance, with the divergence in China and US policy outlooks and investor jitters over how Elon Musk will fund a potential Twitter Inc deal weighing on the EV giant’s share price. China’s EV industry hit a trough during Shanghai’s lockdown — when not even one car was sold in the city in April and factories were forced to shut down or operate under heavy restrictions. Authorities have since unveiled a slew of stimulus measures … [Read more...] about Chinese EV stocks are all the rage, trouncing Tesla

Elon Musk Just Backed a Presidential Candidate. Here’s Who He’s Supporting and Why

August 12, 2019 by www.inc.com

With an incredible 24 Democrats currently vying to take on President Trump next year, there's a bewildering number of candidates to choose from. But Elon Musk has already decided whom he's supporting. On Twitter this week, the Tesla and SpaceX boss backed fellow entrepreneur turned presidential hopeful Andrew Yang . Hey look, someone actually being civil and thoughtful on Twitter The conversation kicked off with a typically thoughtful and mild-mannered tweet from Yang. "I don't expect people to agree with me on everything--that would be odd," Yang wrote. "My main hope is that people trust that I'm trying to solve problems and I'm open to different approaches--particularly if the data drives in a particular direction. Changing one's mind is not a bad thing." This comment would only be noteworthy in a world where the current occupant of the White House didn't regularly conduct juvenile flame wars via social media , but sadly that's not the world we live in. That … [Read more...] about Elon Musk Just Backed a Presidential Candidate. Here’s Who He’s Supporting and Why

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) After eight months of political paralysis, the kingmaker of Iraqi politics has ordered his bloc to withdraw from parliament. The stepdown of Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's entire group of 73 lawmakers is the largest shakeup in Iraqi politics since an October election saw Iran-backed Shiite blocs l osing seats to the Sadrists . The Sadrists now appear to have stepped back from parliamentary politics. "This is a tectonic shift that threatens to derail the post-2003 political order in its entirety," said Ranj Alaaldin, nonresident fellow in the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution, a think tank in Washington, DC. In a handwritten statement, Sadr said that his request for his lawmakers to resign was "a sacrifice from me for the country and the … [Read more...] about Iraq’s most powerful politician has just caused a ‘tectonic shift’

Elon Musk Wants The Electric Vehicle Tax Credit To Disappear; Joe Manchin Might Oblige

June 22, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Planning to buy an electric vehicle? Your net cost could depend on how successful the lobbyists of General Motors GM , Toyota, Ford and Chrysler parent company Stellantis are and whether West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin is ready to strike a deal with his fellow Democrats. Back in 2008, in an effort to jump start the electric car business, Congress created a nonrefundable tax credit of up to $7,500 for eligible vehicles–a credit which (as modified in 2009) starts to phase out once a carmaker has sold 200,000 electric vehicles. After a manufacturer hits the initial cap, the credit gets slashed by 50% for half a year and then by 75% for another half a year, before disappearing entirely. Tesla TSLA hit the total phase-out at the end of 2019 and General Motors at the end of March 2020. Toyota is expected to reach the 200,000 threshold soon, having sold more than 180,000 eligible vehicles as of the end of 2021 , … [Read more...] about Elon Musk Wants The Electric Vehicle Tax Credit To Disappear; Joe Manchin Might Oblige

Afghanistan earthquake kills 1,000 people, deadliest in decades

June 22, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

KABUL, Afghanistan — A powerful earthquake struck a rural, mountainous region of eastern Afghanistan early Wednesday, killing 1,000 people and injuring 1,500 more in one of the deadliest quakes in decades, the state-run news agency reported. Officials warned that the already grim toll may still rise. Information remained scarce on the magnitude 6.1 temblor near the Pakistani border, but quakes of that strength can cause serious damage in an area where homes and other buildings are poorly constructed and landslides are common. Experts put the depth at just 10 kilometers (6 miles) — another factor that could lead to severe destruction. The disaster posed a major test for the Taliban-led government, which seized power last year as the U.S. planned to pull out from the country and end its longest war, two decades after toppling the same insurgents in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Rescuers rushed to the area by helicopter Wednesday, but the response is likely to be complicated since … [Read more...] about Afghanistan earthquake kills 1,000 people, deadliest in decades

The Pee Tape Is Probably Real And Definitely Doesn’t Matter

April 13, 2018 by www.fastcompany.com

The last funny thing about Donald Trump refuses to flush down the toilet. advertisement advertisement Trump was merely a clownish buffoon (with racist tendencies ) until his presidential campaign became too real to laugh off. In the 14 months since reality broke and Trump assumed the presidency, anything that may have once been funny about the man is now rimmed with apocalyptic gravity. Each juvenile tweet comes with the opposite of a silver lining, an ominous reminder that this person is actually in charge of the country . The one thing that has remained funny since it emerged in January 2017 is the legendary pee tape ; that holy grail of urine-soaked sex worker videos. As new information from James Comey’s book makes the pee tape seem more real than ever, though, it’s time to adjust our thinking about the tape and our expectations for just how much it will take the piss out of this presidency, so to speak. According to Comey’s book, Trump … [Read more...] about The Pee Tape Is Probably Real And Definitely Doesn’t Matter
