Rumor: Microsoft Following Apple Again, This Time Into Online TV

· November 29, 2010 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Microsoft often tramps along the same footpath that Apple’s followed, creaming some money from the top (or bottom) of the market with a minimum of effort. A new rumor suggests Microsoft is trying again–this time with online subscription TV. advertisement Okay, so Apple’s not the only player in this market–and Google TV is a bold move into a game where Boxee and others are already playing. But the comparison to Apple is inevitable, given the whole Macs versus PCs debate, Microsoft’s amusing choice about placing its swanky high-street stores near Apple ones…and the fact that it’s having to engage in lengthy debates with TV content providers in order to get shows for its plans. That’s the meat of the rumor hitting the news right now, because we know nothing about the technical aspects of the plan other than it’s to provide TV content through the Xbox game console. There’s a suggestion MS will also … [Read more...] about Rumor: Microsoft Following Apple Again, This Time Into Online TV

Google TV in Minor Skirmish as TV Networks Limit Access to Shows

· October 22, 2010 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement advertisement advertisement Three of the biggest networks have given the thumbs-down to Google TV. ABC, CBS and NBC have all decided to restrict access to shows such as The Office , CSI: Crime Scene Investigation , and Desperate Housewives , offering only promo episodes for viewing. Google is remaining sanguine about the situation, merely commenting: “Google TV enables access to all the Web content you already get today on your phone and PC, but it is ultimately the content owners’ choice to restrict their fans from accessing their content on the platform.” The row is basically over revenue. The TV giants doubt that Google’s entertainment service will enable their shows to generate the big bucks that they did, say, five years ago. Disney, which owns ABC, is said to be unsatisfied with Google’s plan to keep pirated versions of its shows at bay, although Google points out that it … [Read more...] about Google TV in Minor Skirmish as TV Networks Limit Access to Shows

Dish Network is being demolished by cord-cutting even with Sling TV

· August 3, 2017 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Dish Network’s customer exodus over the last few years has been pretty dramatic. In its Q2 earnings report today, the country’s second largest satellite TV company said it lost another 196,000 net pay-TV customers, which is bad but still not as bad as the record 281,000 net customers it lost during the same period last year. All told, though, Dish is down almost three quarters of a million pay-TV customers from where it was three years ago . At the end of Q2 2014 , it had 14.1 million. As of June 30 of this year, it had 13.3 million. It’s hard to parse how many of those come from Sling TV—the streaming service Dish launched in 2015—because the company doesn’t break out the numbers separately. A report from Leichtman Research in May estimated that Sling had about 1.4 million subscribers, so it’s helping, but probably not enough to reverse the trend anytime soon. … [Read more...] about Dish Network is being demolished by cord-cutting even with Sling TV

How to make the most of your remote performance review

· February 16, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Since the start of the pandemic, some of my executive coaching clients have interviewed, landed new jobs, and onboarded—all without ever meeting their hiring manager in person. Learnings from these remote events can inform how to maximize another corporate staple—the performance review—which in many companies has gone virtual as well, at least for the time being. advertisement advertisement While you might expect that receiving feedback is an inherent part of the job, COVID-19 is shaking up many traditional processes. A recent survey revealed that 67% of the employees surveyed hadn’t received any constructive feedback from their manager in the last 30 days, and nearly 50% said they had fewer professional development opportunities while working from home. You may wish or expect your manager to recommend a career development path, but today’s realities require taking a more active … [Read more...] about How to make the most of your remote performance review
