US inflation runs cooler than forecast, easing pressure on Fed
- A + A NEW YORK (Aug 10): US inflation decelerated in July by more than expected, reflecting lower energy prices, which may take some pressure off the Federal Reserve (Fed) to continue aggressively hiking interest rates. The consumer price index (CPI) increased 8.5% from a year earlier, cooling from the 9.1% June advance that was the largest in four decades, Labor Department data showed on Wednesday. Prices were unchanged from the prior month. A decline in gasoline offset increases in food and shelter costs. So-called core CPI, which strips out the more volatile food and energy components, rose 0.3% from June and 5.9% from a year ago. The core and overall measures came in below forecast. The data may give the Fed some breathing room, and the cooling in gas prices, as well as used cars, offers respite to consumers. But annual inflation remains high at more than 8% and food costs continue to rise, providing little relief for President Joe Biden and the … [Read more...] about US inflation runs cooler than forecast, easing pressure on Fed

Tropical Threat Fizzling Out As Surprisingly Quiet Hurricane Season Nears Peak
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline A tropical wave forecasters have been monitoring in the eastern Atlantic Ocean over the past few days seems to be losing steam and now appears unlikely to develop, with no other systems on the horizon even as forecasts call for the Atlantic hurricane season to drastically ramp up . Examining the Health of the Stock Market with Dr. Ed Yardeni
U.S. stocks found their footing last week, finishing up a July to remember. The Dow popped nearly 3% while the S&P added 4.3% last week and the Nasdaq Composite rose 4.7% for the month. For the month, the S&P 500 rallied 9.1% while the Nasdaq popped in a 12.3% gain, recording one of the strongest months in the index's history. If that was a bear trap , it wasn't very convincing, as nine out of the 11 sectors in the S&P 500 all posted gains. If you want to get technical about it, the major indexes all found support for the time being, and we're starting to see some true breadth thrusts playing out across the stock market. A breadth thrust, my friends, is not a fencing move. It's a technical indicator that flashes when a large percentage of stocks make new short-term highs, driving their moving averages higher, with more of those stocks advancing rather than declining. If we look back into the history of the S&P 500, every time we've seen a breath thrust this … [Read more...] about Examining the Health of the Stock Market with Dr. Ed Yardeni
Downtown restaurants rely on the office lunch crowd. Can they survive the move toward hybrid work?
Like many downtown business districts across the U.S., Newark, New Jersey’s central business area is full of restaurants catering to the office crowd. With negligible residential populations to serve, these restaurants follow the daily drifts of workers’ coffee breaks, lunches, and early evening happy hours. Without workers, though, these restaurants would wither. And during the pandemic, many did. advertisement advertisement “When the pandemic hit, it was basically tumbleweeds,” says Josh Miller, who co-owns two restaurants in downtown Newark, Robert’s Pizzeria and La Cocina. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that more than 150,000 restaurants closed nationwide in 2020. “We were doing everything we could to stay in business and continue, but there was very little that you could do. There were no people. Our community went home.” Now, that community is coming back to the office, albeit gradually and/or for only a few days a week. In an … [Read more...] about Downtown restaurants rely on the office lunch crowd. Can they survive the move toward hybrid work?

Dense fog lowers visibility in Delhi: IMD
A blanket of "dense" fog covered parts of Delhi on Sunday morning, lowering visibility and affecting traffic movement, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Rains on Saturday increased moisture content in the air that led to "dense” fog in parts of the city, head of the IMD’s regional forecasting centre, Kuldeep Srivastava, said. The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative data for Delhi, recorded fog that reduced visibility to 200 metres in the morning hours, the IMD said. "Dense fog at the Palam weather station lowered visibility to just 100 metres,” Srivastava said and added that "moderate to very dense fog is predicted for the next two days”. "Very dense” fog is when visibility is between zero and 50 metres and "dense” when between 51 and 200 metres. Close When visibility is between 201 and 500 metres it is "moderate” fog and "shallow” when visibility is between 501 and 1,000 metres, according to the IMD. The Future Of Work: More Hybrid, More Collaborative, More Automated
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Before the pandemic, the future of work seemed pretty clear. Most companies were charging ahead with digital transformation — investing in new ways to collaborate, using AI to improve sales and marketing, and determining which channels were most effective for reaching their customers. Jump ahead just a couple years, and the future of work looks totally different. Offices are living rooms. Conference rooms are largely empty. Office hours vary. The entire concept of work turned itself upside down, and it seems unlikely to go back to pre-pandemic structure anytime soon — if ever. Couple these changes with today’s economy and you’ve got a recipe for an uncertain future. Recently on an earnings call with investors Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that they’re prepared to do more with less. And this is a reality that will likely be seen at several companies as they are poised to deal with this new world of work. But the good news? … [Read more...] about The Future Of Work: More Hybrid, More Collaborative, More Automated
