Representative image (Image: AP) North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, said the country had brought its coronavirus outbreak to an end without vaccines, state media reported Thursday, while Kim’s sister accused South Korea of sending the virus across the border and threatened “deadly” retaliation. After two years of claiming to have no COVID-19 cases, North Korea reported an outbreak in May, announcing a “maximum emergency” and locking down all of its cities and counties. On Wednesday, Kim “solemnly declared the victory” in “exterminating the novel coronavirus that had made inroads into our territory,” the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported. Kim, speaking at a meeting with national health officials, said his government would downgrade its anti-disease vigilance to an “ordinary” level as of Friday, according to the report. Omicron Is Overwhelming New York’s Quarantine Hotel System
(Representative image) For much of the pandemic, one way that the city has tried to slow the coronavirus’s spread is by offering free hotel rooms to infected people who cannot easily isolate themselves from those they live with. But the sheer number of people who are sick with the omicron variant may be overwhelming the hotel program — both for the general public and another for people in homeless shelters. Inside one Brooklyn shelter this week, 11 women who had tested positive for the virus were crowded into a small room furnished with only a few mattresses on the floor and several chairs, two of the women said. Three people who tried to take advantage of the main hotel-quarantine system said Thursday that they either had waited days before getting a room, given up and paid for one themselves, or been stuck on hold for hours on a city hotline without anyone ever picking up. Others have posted messages on Twitter about their own long waits. “I requested a hotel over 5 … [Read more...] about Omicron Is Overwhelming New York’s Quarantine Hotel System
DOH to ease curbs when booster shots reach 24 million
A Marikina resident takes a selfie while getting a booster shot. NIÑO JESUS ORBETA/FILE PHOTO The COVID-19 restrictions in the country may be further relaxed only when half of the eligible individuals, or about 24 million, get inoculated with first booster shots to guarantee a sufficient protection for most of the population, a top health official said on Friday. This was among the conditions that would have to be met before the government could go ahead with more relaxed COVID-19 policies and fewer mobility restrictions as seen in other countries. “The restrictions would have to be discussed with experts and other agencies. But in terms of the threshold, we have to increase the wall of immunity of the population. For us, we need to [get] at least 50 percent of the eligible population … to get their first boosters,” Maria Rosario Vergeire, officer in charge of the Department of Health (DOH), said at a press conference. She said this was equivalent to around 23.9 million … [Read more...] about DOH to ease curbs when booster shots reach 24 million

Inter-Pacific Asset Management Sdn Bhd executive director and fund manager Datuk Nazri Khan Adam Khan said the local bourse is making a comeback as it has been moving below the 1,500-psychological mark for some time. He said sentiment in the market has recovered following the easing of the US inflation rate, which helped ease worries about global economic growth. Additionally, the better-than-expected gross domestic product in the second quarter of 2022 which saw the economy grow by 8.9% — higher than the consensus expectations of between 5.5% and 6.5% — also contributed to the positive vibe in the market. “The strong performance is a signal to investors that we will be able to sustain the recovery. “As … [Read more...] about Bursa’s comeback momentum to continue next week
