If DoorDash wins, what do we lose?

· February 25, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement In the first-ever season of Sesame Street , in 1970, cast member Bob McGrath appeared in a memorable sketch where he receives a delivery from his local grocer, a grumpy blue muppet. “Did you get everything I ordered?” McGrath asks. “No,” comes the reply, but he’s helpfully supplemented the delivery with other fresh veggies. McGrath breaks into song, a version of the now iconic “People in Your Neighborhood,” to explain to kids the role a grocer plays in the community. The grocer is the bearer of sustenance. advertisement advertisement A few weeks ago, during Super Bowl LV, “People in Your Neighborhood” got remixed into an anthem for the app-based delivery platform DoorDash to signal to the world that it is expanding from restaurants to convenience and grocery. In a crisp 60 seconds, a tap dancing Daveed Diggs ( Hamilton )—directed by French auteur Michel Gondry ( Eternal Sunshine of … [Read more...] about If DoorDash wins, what do we lose?

advertisement advertisement advertisement As the Persian Gulf nation of Qatar prepares to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament, the toll on the mostly migrant workers building its venues and related infrastructure is rising. According to a new report from The Guardian , more than 6,500 migrant workers have died in Qatar since it was selected to host next year’s World Cup back in 2010. advertisement advertisement Due to inconsistent and imprecise records, it’s difficult to know exactly how many of these deaths are directly connected to projects being built for the soccer tournament, but the report draws a clear relationship between Qatar’s World Cup building spree and a labor rights system that puts migrants at risk. “The numbers of deaths revealed by The Guardian are deeply alarming and further raise fears that migrant workers are paying the highest price in this tournament,” says May Romanos, a Persian Gulf … [Read more...] about At least 6,500 workers have died building Qatar’s World Cup

Gingers Rule! How Two Redheaded Sisters Turned Hair Color Into A Growing Business

advertisement advertisement advertisement Hey Kermit , try being red . Now that’s not easy. advertisement advertisement That’s the conclusion sisters Stephanie Vendetti and Adrienne Vendetti Hodges reached, growing up as natural-born redheads. In so many ways, the world just wasn’t built for them, says Adrienne. “For prom, we’d go get our makeup done, but no one knew how to do a redhead’s makeup. Our skin was so sensitive, it was hard to find products.” They’d go to the store to buy hairpins, but everything was made for those much larger markets of blondes or brunettes. Worst of all, though, Adrienne remembers, was the bullying. In their small Rhode Island town, the Vendettis were the only redheads in their school. “The bullying starts early, around second or third grade,” recalls Adrienne. “There are so many different names people call you: carrot top, freckle face. They make fun of your pale skin.” One teacher took to … [Read more...] about Gingers Rule! How Two Redheaded Sisters Turned Hair Color Into A Growing Business

One Way To Get Drivers Out Of Cars? Anti-Addiction Therapy

· July 17, 2014 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Most car owners have heard the arguments about why they shouldn’t drive–alternative transportation is cheaper, healthier, better for the environment, and, if you walk or bike, can make you happier . But even when public transit is readily available or a bike is in the garage, many people still choose to drive. A public service campaign touting the same old messages isn’t likely to have that much of an effect. advertisement advertisement What might work, instead, is borrowing a technique from addiction treatment. For the last few years, the U.K.-based transportation consultancy Steer Davies Gleave has been using a technique called motivational interviewing , originally developed to help alcoholics stop drinking, to get people out of their cars. Instead of telling people that they should change their habits, or trying to impose any sense of guilt, the technique focuses on listening to … [Read more...] about One Way To Get Drivers Out Of Cars? How To Rediscover Your Motivation

· July 22, 2014 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Companies spend a lot of time and money trying to motivate their employees. advertisement advertisement But when was the last time a mug with your company’s logo or a coffee shop gift card made you truly excited? Real motivation doesn’t come from external rewards–it comes from making some shifts in how you think about your situation, says San Diego, California-based personal empowerment expert Susan Fowler, author of Why Motivating People Doesn’t Work . . . And What Does: The New Science of Leading, Energizing, and Engaging. “Give a whale a fish and it’ll jump as high as you want. Give a pigeon a pellet and it’ll turn 360 degrees. That whole animal behavior theory is what the workplace is built on. We’ve got to get away from that because we’re not pigeons and we’re not whales,” she says. If you’ve lost your motivational mojo recently, take heart. Changing the way you think and adding … [Read more...] about How To Rediscover Your Motivation
