Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The view we have of Ghislaine Maxwell is, despite the horrific detail from her accusers, in her depositions, and as laid out from the prosecution at her initial trial a year ago, shrouded in one significant way, and that is this: Her gilt socialite origins in England as the youngest Oxford-educated daughter of publishing magnate Robert Maxwell do not, on the surface, seem to be the harbingers of the sexual and psychological abuse she has been convicted of perpetrating. But a new Netflix release Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich , aims to fill that gap. Principally and horrifically, it does. A major consultant on the film, Petronella Wyatt, the noted former London Spectator editor, journalist and author, has deftly opened a window onto Ms. Maxwell’s now-familiar modus operandi. Ms. Wyatt is the daughter of a prominent British politician, and his Hungarian-born wife, Lady Wyatt, was educated at Oxford and University College … [Read more...] about Ghislaine Maxwell’s London History: Former London ‘Spectator’ Editor Petronella Wyatt Lowers The Boom

[+] (Marc Israel Sellem, Jerusalem Post via AP) ASSOCIATED PRESS Even more natural gas has been found off Israel’s coastline, which may help shift the global energy paradigm. Greek oil and gas developer Energean has discovered what it says is between 28-42 billion cubic meters of natural gas, all on top of the 67 billion cubic meters that it has already located. The discovery comes atop earlier ones a decade ago that are getting tapped and will be eventually distributed to former adversaries of Israel: Jordan and Egypt. And there are also plans to sell the natural gas to Turkey, Greece and Cyprus. Indeed, if Israel blossoms into a regional energy powerhouse, it could have profound implications for geopolitics — and possibly extend as far as East as Iraq. “We are delighted to be announcing this … [Read more...] about Israel’s Natural Gas Discoveries Are Bridging Political Divides And Are Forging Economic Ties
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin One of the dumbest political soundbites was President Obama saying, about a bridge, “You didn’t build that.” His basic argument was sound: government not business provides public goods like infrastructure. (Another case of misleading soundbites.) His comments were presumably pushback against the idea that the private sector does everything better than the government, or, as Ronald Reagan said, government isn’t the solution, it’s the problem. My impression is that this pro-business philosophy began to gain currency in the Gilded Age when the roaring success of the U.S. private sector convinced many that the private sector was better at everything. Politicians—like most of the population—generally have no sense of economics, let alone business, and frequently take steps that are economically irrational because they don’t perceive the costs being inflicted on companies. Most egregiously, setting regulations and then canceling … [Read more...] about How Politicians Unknowingly Hurt The Oil Industry
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin U.S. merchandise trade with the world is on track to surpass an eye-popping $5 trillion in 2022, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data. Total U.S. trade only surpassed $4 trillion for the first time in 2018, four years ago. It took 11 years for total U.S. trade to surpass $3 trillion after first topping $2 trillion. Imports are likely to surpass $3 trillion this year for the first time and exports likely to surpass $2 trillion for the first time. As you might have already surmised, the trade deficit will indeed surpass $1 trillion but that happened for the first time in 2021, as I previously wrote. This surge in trade, which is likely to be worth about $875 billion over the 2021 total, appears likely to occur despite an ongoing trade war with China that predates the presidency of Joe Biden but because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. That invasion created additional snags and shortages in the supply … [Read more...] about U.S. Total Trade Likely To Surpass Eye-Popping $5 Trillion In 2022
