Earlier this decade, diversity advocates pressured the nation’s tech giants to publicly share their employee diversity statistics—and won. Many of Silicon Valley’s tech companies now publish annual diversity reports. advertisement advertisement But for many underrepresented groups, transparency hasn’t brought about meaningful improvement. Half of the millennials entering the workforce seek to work within diverse teams, but an analysis of employee diversity data shows Big Tech consistently failing to meet that demand. Over the past five years of sharing the numbers, remarkably little progress has been made, even as these companies’ role in shaping our lives and our democracies has become all the more apparent. Back in 2014, I made my own Google Doodle. It used Google’s logo as a canvas to portray the company’s startlingly white and startlingly male employee demographics. Now, five years later, I’ve updated it. Google’s logo … [Read more...] about See Big Tech’s terrible diversity record, visualized using its logos
With reports of a massive data breach at Capital One this week came a now-familiar warning: roughly 140,000 Social Security numbers of the bank’s credit card applicants had apparently been stolen, along with another 80,000 bank account numbers. advertisement advertisement Capital One’s announcement came shortly after a $700 million settlement was announced by the Federal Trade Commission in the 2017 data breach at Equifax, which exposed more than 140 million Social Security numbers. Being used by so many different institutions makes them genuinely useful for making sure two different files actually refer to the same person named, say, John Smith. But it also … [Read more...] about Your Social Security number has already been hacked. Why do we still have them?
With the alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena all but over— at the Centre, in the state and perhaps even the municipal levels — and indications that a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-Sena government, with outside support from Congress, might be propped up, it is vital to have a look at the alliances the party has forged in the past.Nicknamed, years after its formation, 'Vasant Sena' after the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Congress stalwart Vasantrao Naik, Sena has gone on to forge alliances or have understandings with parties as diverse as Praja Socialist Party (PSP) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).Sena fought its first civic body elections in Mumbai with the PSP in 1968, and then went on to ally with the Republican Party of India (RPI) in 1972. In the same year, Sena took help from IUML to install its nominee as Mayor.Close Also Read: Maharashtra govt formation: Deadlock continues, Congress waiting for 'tipping point' … [Read more...] about Maharashtra government formation: Shiv Sena’s alliances over the years
Associations are part of the fabric of the United States. For over 100 years they have been bringing American professionals together to network, get the best education, and provide the collective heft it takes to lobby. For most, the way they conduct business is also more than a century old, wedged firmly in the past. advertisement advertisement People do not need or desire associations in the same ways they once did. They can network today in a myriad of venues, such as LinkedIn and Facebook to name only the most well known. Education is provided, often free, by the private sector as a loss leader. People just don’t join associations because they work in a particular field. They do it today only if they see a return on their investment. And time is often more precious than money. To an outsider it seems most associations have their heads in the sand when it comes to education. When there is a breakthrough, or simply new ways of doing things, the meeting planners find … [Read more...] about Lessons In Doing Associations Right, From The American College Of Cardiology
