Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin With Boeing and its 737 Max we’re seeing one more example of how not to manage a crisis. Through the years, many have done this well and less well. The common theme is that leading through a crisis is about inspiring and enabling others to get things vaguely right quickly, and then adapt along the way - with clarity around direction, leadership and roles. This plays out in three steps of a disciplined iteration in line with an organization’s overall purpose: 1. PREPARE IN ADVANCE: The better you have anticipated possible scenarios, the more prepared you are, the more confidence you will have when crises strike. 2. REACT TO EVENTS: The reason you prepared is so that you all can react quickly and flexibility to the situation you face. Don’t over-think this. Do what you prepared to do. 3. BRIDGE THE GAPS. In a crisis, there is inevitably a gap between the desired and current state of affairs. Rectify that by bridging … [Read more...] about Learnings From Boeing’s 737 Max, Coca-Cola, And Procter & Gamble On Crisis Management

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Look up any list of the top challenges currently facing leaders— Forbes , McKinsey , Gallup , KornFerry , each have their list—and, despite some differences, they all rest on a common denominator: They all require an enormous amount of energy and learning agility from leaders, not only for personal stamina, but for engaging and inspiring others. These can be tiring, disorienting times, with rapid competitive pivots, new ways of working that aren’t always working, mass resignations, and increased strains on mental and physical health. How can we find the abundant energy needed to be bigger than the challenges we face and be a guiding force for others? Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Rosie Wolf Williams, Next Avenue My mother told me many times over the years that she had a will, and I believed her. When she passed away, we discovered that her will was 40 years old — and completely useless. To start, she had never signed the copy we found, and the man named to be executor had died a decade before she did. Grandchildren born after she wrote the will were not mentioned, and items left to some people had long ago been passed on to others. Such problems are not uncommon, because many older adults and their children don't want to talk about death. Of course, you could simply ask your parents or others about their wishes, but how do you make sure the transition after they have died is smooth, without sounding harsh or greedy? Who Needs a Will? "The question in so many minds is, what happens if my parent dies without a will? The short answer is, it depends," says Rebecca Goldfarb, … [Read more...] about Mom, Do You Have A Will?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For those with aging loved ones, it may be difficult to distinguish a few signs of “normal” aging from things that should raise some red flags. No one teaches you in school how to spot trouble signs with aging loved ones. And it’s our human nature to avoid unpleasant things, isn’t it? Watching our aging parents decline is difficult, though part of nature. But there are some obvious warnings we really need to see, and act upon rather than ignore. Here’s an example, though I have just made up the story that goes with what I saw. In walking in my neighborhood, I came across a beat-up car, which had been in the driveway of a nice home, in a well-kept area. It apparently did not belong to a visitor, as it had been sitting there in the same place for days. I took a moment and walked around it. The side had been bashed in in several places, suggesting accidents of the “fender-bender” type. The trunk was held together with bungee … [Read more...] about When Is It Time To Start Helping Your Aging Parents?

Aging parents, often far away from family, are especially at risk. When disaster strikes, scammers see opportunity. The waters after Ian haven’t even receded, and ripoff artists are already scheming how to take advantage of people. They move fast. They can get to your loved ones while they are still dazed and feeling lost. Scammers see confuses folks as a golden opportunity to get money. The Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning of what to watch for and how to avoid the opportunists who are targeting your aging loved ones and others. The essence of some points the FTC cautions against are these things: Clean-up and repair scams. Watch out for unlicensed contractors and scammers who appear with promises of quick repairs, clean-up, and debris removal. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Waymo today announced the results of a new study where they claim their Waymo driver system outperformed a model of an idealized top-grade human driver at taking evasive action to avoid crashes caused by somebody else. If that’s true, the next question is, what’s holding Waymo back from full scale commercial deployment? Earlier, Waymo published a study where they recreated all fatal accidents which took place in the recent past in Chandler , Arizona, where they have operations. In the simulator, they had their system relive those accidents, playing the role of the at-fault driver (where they easily prevented all of them) and also playing the role of the driver who was hit or forced into a crash (where they avoided many of them with good defensive driving.) To go further, they have both improved their driver system to include evasive action — swerving and other maneuvers to avoid the crash. They also created a … [Read more...] about Waymo Claims Superhuman Ability To Dodge Accidents, So Why Aren’t They Launched?
Logitech's MX Mechanical Keyboard and MX Master 3S Mouse are aimed at creators, or professionals who require precision and high performance out of their peripherals. The premium keyboard/mouse set costs a pretty penny but does it deliver on what it promises? Design The MX Mechanical keyboard is available in two variants - full size keyboard and a tenkeyless option called Mechanical Mini. For the purpose of our review we had the full size keyboard to test out. The keyboard feels heavy, thanks to a metal construction that feels very sturdy and dependable. The metal frame is laid out in a striking two-tone chassis, that is neatly separated on the top by two smooth curves, and a new logi logo in the middle. The keys themselves are brushed in light and dark colors, with the important function keys being laid out in a darker tone to denote their importance. It's an interesting and subtly stylish look, one that doesn't immediately draw your attention but invites further … [Read more...] about Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard and MX Master 3S Mouse Review: The perfect work companions
