New York (CNN Business) United Airlines gave a $10 million deposit to a startup developing electric aircraft — all for the goal of shuttling customers to and from the airport by air rather than gridlocked roadways. It's not clear when or if the plan will come to fruition, as Archer, the company developing the electric air taxis, is still in the development phase. However, the company said Wednesday that's it's finishing the design of its production model. Archer estimates the first of its four-seater helicopters could be in operation by 2024. California-based Archer, which was founded in 2018, has raised nearly a billion dollars, according to analytics company Crunchbase . It refers to its aircraft as an eVTOL, or "electric vertical takeoff and landing" configuration. The company states they'll be able to travel up to 60 miles at up to 150 miles per hour. The aircraft is expected to lift off much like a helicopter, and it'll rotate its propellers from providing vertical to … [Read more...] about United Airlines puts $10 million behind plan to shuttle customers by electric aircraft

5 marketing concepts that need to be reexamined
ILLUSTRATIONBY RUTH MACAPAGAL There are fundamental concepts in marketing that remain relevant despite technology and changing consumer behaviors. This is important since what we know strongly influences what we do. Marketers (and entrepreneurs) need not wait for the consequences of a wrong action to influence new knowledge. Here is a list of five concepts marketers should look into to check if they have the right understanding of the business of marketing. 1. Needs and wants of the customers have to be identified First, most customers don’t even know what they actually need or want. They may know what they dislike but when it comes to new product design, it is still the domain of a company’s technical group, usually influenced by the company’s visionaries. For example, would the idea of an electronic blood pressure monitor come from hypertensive patients? Unlikely. The most they can do during the dominance of the manual blood pressure monitor era is to cite the pain points … [Read more...] about 5 marketing concepts that need to be reexamined

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Mark Bucknam is unveiling what life is like away from the sand for a professional beach volleyball player. The BYB Pictures director recently released the five-part series AVP Uncovered via YouTube, detailing how four professional beach volleyball players rode the highs and lows through the 2021 AVP season. The 25-year-old Florida Southern graduate explained how the idea became clearer the more he started to play and watch these athletes operate. “I wanted to watch a show like the one we just made,” Bucknam said. “One that was behind the scenes and into these people’s lives, showing you who they are as people and not just as competitors. That show didn’t exist for beach volleyball. I saw a real opportunity to combine the things I like to do the most, which is play beach volleyball and work on video documentaries.” Bucknam noted the stark contrast between a beach volleyball player’s path to the pro ranks as compared … [Read more...] about AVP Uncovered Tells The Not-So-Glamorous Side Of Professional Beach Volleyball Life

This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on August 1, 2022 - August 07, 2022. - A + A Small and medium enterprises have put capital expenditure on hold despite the reopening of the economy BUSINESS activities in the country have been in full swing for several months now, after two years of pandemic-induced movement restrictions. Demand has been strong since borders reopened, but the rising cost of raw materials, global economic uncertainties and, more pressingly, labour shortages have impacted the business growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Usually, strong orders from clients mean that business owners will start thinking about making investments to meet the demand. However, at this point in time, very few SMEs are considering capital expenditure. “Many of our members are holding back on capital investment despite the pandemic seemingly coming to a tail end. Without certainty in our ability to deliver on orders, or for … [Read more...] about Cover Story: Investment winter hits SMEs
Meme-stock frenzy returns, baffling Wall Street’s ‘smart guys’
Shopping carts outside a Bed Bath & Beyond store in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S., on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021. Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. is scheduled to release earnings figures on January 7. Retail traders who lurk in forums like Reddit’s WallStreetBets are back to betting against Wall Street pros and the Federal Reserve as rallies for meme stocks like Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. show shades of last year’s mania. The home-good retailer nearly tripled at one point during its nine-day winning streak while the movie-theater firm capped a 65% rally of its own as speculative pockets of the stock market surge. The pair have powered a basket of 37 meme stocks tracked by Bloomberg higher by 10% over the past week while the most-hated stocks tracked by a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. basket is up roughly 17% over the same period. The resurgence of more speculative areas of the market is likely fueled in part by individual traders willingness to jump … [Read more...] about Meme-stock frenzy returns, baffling Wall Street’s ‘smart guys’
