With one of the strongest fields and most exciting finishes in Kentucky Derby history, the 138th “Run For the Roses,” set an all time attendance record at Louisville’s Churchill Downs, with over 165,000 there in person to see I’ll Have Another take the crown. As I noted yesterday, the crowd was a mix of veterans who come every year and wouldn’t miss the race for anything and first timers – most of whom now join the ranks of the regulars and will return, having been converted by what is arguably the best sporting event to attend live in this country. The Kentucky Derby, coupled with the Kentucky Oaks held the day before, is two full days of fun, excitement, history in the making, tradition, fancy dress, hats, drinks, food … [Read more...] about Start Planning For 2013 Kentucky Derby Now

The Kentucky Derby: Great Fun And A Must-Do For Your Bucket List

May 8, 2012 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Famous Churchill Downs racetrack - you have to see it in person to appreciate it. I’ll Have Another, as in I’ll Have Another Kentucky Derby, hopefully as soon as next year. I just returned from Louisville, Churchill Downs, and “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” and I can sum my experience up in one word: Awesome. I’ve been to a lot of major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, and the argument could be made that the Kentucky Derby is the best of all, mainly because it is about so much more than the race itself. Go to the World Series or NBA Finals and you get 3 hours of entertainment. Much of the fun surrounding the Super Bowl is in the form of invitation-only parties and VIP events, not the game. But the Kentucky Derby is the complete package, morning to night fun - for two full days - at a minimum. You don’t have to know anything about horse racing to love the Derby, with all its pomp and … [Read more...] about The Kentucky Derby: Great Fun And A Must-Do For Your Bucket List

Struck by this reality in 2015 while overseeing construction for a new headquarters for her interdisciplinary humanitarian nonprofit, Grace Farms Foundation, she began making the elimination of modern slavery part of the organization’s mission. Moneycontrol Pro Panorama | Are US and Indian markets decoupling?

August 8, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Dear Reader , The Panorama newsletter is sent to Moneycontrol Pro subscribers on market days. It offers easy access to stories published on Moneycontrol Pro and gives a little extra by setting out a context or an event or trend that investors should keep track of. In a case of how cheer for the economy may not be so for markets, investors in US stocks fretted over excellent jobs data. US businesses added 5,28,000 jobs in July, beating most estimates by an embarrassing margin. US 2-year treasuries rose after the report, as the market priced in a more certain likelihood of another 75-basis point rate hike by the US Fed. But the S&P 500 slipped, as investors pondered over what too strong an economy could mean for interest rates. Those fears did not carry over to India, however, with the stock market rising by a strong 0.8 percent at 1.15pm. The RBI’s 50 basis point hike in the repo rate last week and its determination to stay in ‘withdrawal of accommodation’ mode is … [Read more...] about Moneycontrol Pro Panorama | Are US and Indian markets decoupling?

Congress is busy considering space funding and authorizations

August 4, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Congress has spent the last few weeks hammering out next year’s authorizations and funding decisions. advertisement advertisement On the policy side, CHIPS and Science passed in both the House and Senate last week.  On the funding side, policymakers have been reviewing and amending next year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which will provide funding for military space programs. August 9, 2022 by www.investopedia.com

The revised figures represent the top line contracting 19% sequentially from the previous quarter and 3% from the prior year. Key Takeaways Nvidia released preliminary Q2 earnings that show revenue of $6.7 billion, well below the chipmaker’s prior forecast of $8.1 billion. How Mark Rober became the Willy Wonka of engineering

Maybe it’s got a golf simulator and a billiards table, or radiant-heat floors, or polychromatic India Mahdavi furniture, or meticulously cultivated hygge. Whatever it is, whatever you’re envisioning, it would be even better if it had a secret door leading to another room. And of course, a secret door has to reveal itself in some sick way, like how you run through a wall to get to track 9 3⁄4, or wade through a coat closet to get to Narnia, or turn a bronze eagle on a bookshelf, or push the correct button on a soda machine. It can’t just be a switch labeled secret door, though that’d be kind of funny. That kind of meta humor would be very on-brand for Mark Rober, except … [Read more...] about How Mark Rober became the Willy Wonka of engineering

In crowded city races, Denver’s new fair election fund will face first test

August 9, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

Overhauling Denver’s campaign finance rules was popular with voters in 2018. More than 70% of Denverites who cast ballots that year voted for Referred Measure 2E. The sweeping change to the city’s campaign rules ratcheted down contribution limits for candidates seeking every seat from mayor to the city auditor, banned direct corporate and union campaign contributions and established a fair elections fund to provide public financing for candidates who agreed to abide by even lower contribution limits and other rules. Participate in the fair elections fund and receive a 9-to-1 public funding match on contributions from Denver residents between $5 and $50. In other words, a $50 donation becomes $500 with taxpayer money so long as the donor hails from the city and county. A lot has happened since then. First, the measure’s backers struck a deal with the City Council to delay the law’s effective date until after the 2019 municipal election instead of trying to enact the changes … [Read more...] about In crowded city races, Denver’s new fair election fund will face first test

Apple’s chart-topping run gets a boost from retail investors

August 9, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (Aug 9): Apple Inc is back in a familiar role as market leader after a painful first half of the year that saw hundreds of billions of dollars in market value disappear, and individual investors are a big reason for the rally. Since bottoming in mid-June, the iPhone maker’s shares have surged 27%, outpacing the S&P 500 Index and the Nasdaq 100 Index. That’s put Apple back on top as the world’s most valuable company and within sight of turning positive for the year. Apple is now down just 7.4% in 2022, compared with a drop of 20% for the Nasdaq 100. Apple shares benefited from a relief rally after its quarterly earnings were better than feared, and its ongoing buoyancy reflects Wall Street’s confidence in its ability to continue churning out big profits. Individual investors, who recently helped ignite rallies in speculative corners of the market, have flocked to the stock. “Retail investors have been strong buyers of Apple over the past couple of … [Read more...] about Apple’s chart-topping run gets a boost from retail investors

Stock Buyback Tax Will Harm State & Local Pensions

August 9, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The growth trajectory of the largest national entitlement programs — Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid — has many concerned, understandably so. But state and local unfunded pension liabilities must also be counted among the major challenges to U.S. fiscal health. According to Pew research, unfunded state pension liabilities reached a combined $1.25 trillion in 2019. Other projections that assume more modest investment returns find total unfunded state pension liabilities today in excess of $8 trillion . The trillions of dollars in growing unfunded public pension liabilities, for which taxpayers are ultimately on the hook, is a problem that could soon be exacerbated by a new federal tax in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that will diminish state and local pension plan returns. “We should not increase taxes, and we did not increase taxes,” Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) said about the IRA on NBC’s Meet the … [Read more...] about Stock Buyback Tax Will Harm State & Local Pensions
