Russia slips into historic default as sanctions muddy next steps
- A + A (June 27): Russia defaulted on its external sovereign bonds for the first time in a century, the culmination of ever-tougher Western sanctions that shut down payment routes to overseas creditors. For months, Russia had found paths around the penalties imposed after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. But at the end of the day on Sunday, the grace period on about US$100 million of trapped interest payments due May 27 expired, a deadline considered an “Event of Default” if missed. The route to this point has been far from normal, as Russia has the resources to pay its bills — and tried to do so — but was blocked by the sanctions. Those restrictions also mean there’s huge uncertainty about what comes next, and about how investors can go about getting their money. “With Russia benefiting from the high price of its energy exports, it clearly has both the means and the desire to pay its foreign debt,” said Giles Coghlan, chief analyst at HYCM Group. It’s a … [Read more...] about Russia slips into historic default as sanctions muddy next steps
Your Business has Been Damaged or Destroyed by a Natural Disaster, What now?
Every year, around the world, tens of thousands of small businesses are badly disrupted by natural disasters (and sometimes man made disasters). I know that in Australia alone, we face fire, floods and cyclones constantly. The cost both financially and emotionally is huge. Businesses can be disrupted for anything from a few days to a few months. So what should you do to when disaster hits your business? 1. Start by setting up communication to the outside world. The first step in the rebuilding process is to make sure you are connected to the outside world and this normally means a working telephone and an email connection. It might mean hiring some computer equipment or getting your mobile phone set up for internet connection (if you haven't already. Even setting up a TV in your building helps to make you feel connected to the rest of the world. 2. Break the rebuilding process into smaller, more manageable chunks When standing in a devastated office, … [Read more...] about Your Business has Been Damaged or Destroyed by a Natural Disaster, What now?
Daily Voice | More correction likely as these four risk factors not priced in yet, says Dhananjay Sinha of JM Financial
"It will be early to assume that the full impact of headwinds (that confront the global and Indian economy currently) are priced in," says Dhananjay Sinha, Managing Director and Head Strategist and Economist - Equity Research at JM Financial Institutional Securities. Gauging the markets using this monitor, JM Financial sees that 30-35 percent of the characteristics of past capitulation are visible as of now, leaving further scope for adjustments. Hence they expect commodity prices to correct further and crude would be the last to collapse, giving rise to a scenario of market capitulation. Thus, the markets may still be afar from a deep value situation, Sinha shares in an interview with Moneycontrol . Excerpts from the interview: Do you think the market fully priced in all these risk factors? Do you see any other risk that the market hasn't factored in yet? While it is true that the market now knows the various risks that confront the global and Indian economy, it will … [Read more...] about Daily Voice | More correction likely as these four risk factors not priced in yet, says Dhananjay Sinha of JM Financial
Hydrogen Cars Might Be Dead Already Despite This Fuel Cell Hypercar
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It was a momentous announcement over the last few months – Toyota’s first all-electric car, the bZ4X, was launched in the UK , having arrived in the USA in April and Japan in May. After the Japanese company’s feet-dragging and negativity towards EVs, in favor of hydrogen, it felt like an “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” moment. It might be the first ding the death knell for fuel-cell vehicles, but there is another factor that could kill hydrogen stone dead except where you absolutely must use it. Although the bZ4X’s launch has already been significantly marred by a recall , the car has potential. Its headline act is the battery warranty, which is for ten years or a million kilometers (620,000 miles). This will reassure the naysayers who go on about “having to change the battery after three years” (because they think an EV is the same as a smartphone). Otherwise, the bZ4X merely matches the crowd, with a … [Read more...] about Hydrogen Cars Might Be Dead Already Despite This Fuel Cell Hypercar
Tax Information Reporting On Digital Assets Steps Into The Spotlight
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The looming prospect of compliance with the reporting requirements in section 6050I has been a problem for the digital asset industry since the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (P.L. 117-58) last November. The requirements pose procedural obstacles and privacy concerns for taxpayers, but the government has an interest in ensuring compliance with the tax laws. The revised version of section 6050I requires taxpayers engaged in a trade or business to file an information return when they receive $10,000 or more in digital assets in one transaction or two or more related transactions in the course of that trade or business. The information required is the name, address, and tax identification number of the person from whom the assets were received; the amount of the assets; and the date and nature of the transaction. The provision was originally designed for cash transactions. The brief push for … [Read more...] about Tax Information Reporting On Digital Assets Steps Into The Spotlight
