Forbes found several yachts owned by sanctioned Russian and Russian-born billionaires that reclassified themselves houseboats and “reflagged,” or changed their registration, from British tax havens to more Russian-friendly spots. Written by Giacomo Tognini I t’s been seven months since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine spurred Western authorities to hit Russian oligarchs with sanctions, taking aim at their luxury superyachts. The actions have ranged from outright seizure to deregistering the vessels , making it difficult—if not impossible—for the floating palaces to obtain insurance and sail legally. But several sanctioned Russian and Russian-born billionaires are now registering their yachts in countries that haven’t imposed sanctions on Russia—possibly because they could no longer obtain insurance accepted in the territories where they were registered, or as an attempt to allow them to sail legally if sanctions are ever removed. Forbes found six yachts owned by … [Read more...] about How Sanctioned Russian Billionaires Are Trying To Loosen Europe’s Grip On Their Superyachts

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Project-based learning was on the rise pre-pandemic. The sudden shift to remote learning brought with it more worksheets (just digital this time) and bite-sized tasks—and with it less engagement, less integration, and less application. With the new school year and more systems embracing broader learning goals, we’re seeing renewed interest inquiry-based learning in which students explore real-world problems through individual and group projects. Four recent studies show that rigorous project-based learning has positive effects on student outcomes across grades and subjects and across racial and socioeconomic backgrounds and reading and language proficiency levels. Project-based learning makes sense of why content is useful and how it might be applied. Projects develops critical skills including problem definition, design thinking, problem-solving, communications, collaboration, and project management. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Charlie Morton won’t be retiring after all. The veteran right-handed starter has signed a new, $20 million contract to remain in the rotation of the Atlanta Braves for 2023 and perhaps 2024 – if a club option, worth another $20 million, is exercised. There is no buyout included. The deal, announced before the start of the crucial Mets-Braves weekend series Friday, was a surprise. Morton, 38, has had an erratic season and had openly flirted with retirement. In fact, the front office had reportedly been considering how to re-invest his $20 million in getting a potential rotation replacement – preferably someone younger. Although he is a two-time All-Star, Morton has struggled this season, posting an uncharacteristic 4.29 earned run average in 167 2/3 innings heading into his last start Sunday. He has a 9-6 record but 200+ strikeouts – joining with rookie Spencer Strider to become the first Braves tandem at that … [Read more...] about Charlie Morton Re-Ups With Braves, Inking $20 Million Deal For 2023

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For those with aging loved ones, it may be difficult to distinguish a few signs of “normal” aging from things that should raise some red flags. No one teaches you in school how to spot trouble signs with aging loved ones. And it’s our human nature to avoid unpleasant things, isn’t it? Watching our aging parents decline is difficult, though part of nature. But there are some obvious warnings we really need to see, and act upon rather than ignore. Here’s an example, though I have just made up the story that goes with what I saw. In walking in my neighborhood, I came across a beat-up car, which had been in the driveway of a nice home, in a well-kept area. It apparently did not belong to a visitor, as it had been sitting there in the same place for days. I took a moment and walked around it. The side had been bashed in in several places, suggesting accidents of the “fender-bender” type. The trunk was held together with bungee … [Read more...] about When Is It Time To Start Helping Your Aging Parents?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When inflation rises rapidly, few workers are left unscathed. Those with traditional salaries and yearly cost-of-living boosts can make up a portion of the rising costs, although it often takes time to go into effect. For the self-employed , though, it threatens your very livelihood since it’s on you to make sure your income keeps up. This issue has come into focus with the recent surge in inflation, which grew 8.6% in the year ending in May 2022, reaching a 40-year high . This rise is the result of many macroeconomic trends, such as the economy bursting forward during the pandemic recovery, along with the impact of the Ukraine crisis, among other reasons. Salaries have yet had a chance to catch up. By February 2022, only 18% of workers could say that their household income had grown with inflation. Among those making $100,000 or more, 31% said that pay had kept up with inflation. For workers, these raises require a … [Read more...] about How To Keep Your Self-Employment Income Rising With Inflation

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Waymo today announced the results of a new study where they claim their Waymo driver system outperformed a model of an idealized top-grade human driver at taking evasive action to avoid crashes caused by somebody else. If that’s true, the next question is, what’s holding Waymo back from full scale commercial deployment? Earlier, Waymo published a study where they recreated all fatal accidents which took place in the recent past in Chandler , Arizona, where they have operations. In the simulator, they had their system relive those accidents, playing the role of the at-fault driver (where they easily prevented all of them) and also playing the role of the driver who was hit or forced into a crash (where they avoided many of them with good defensive driving.) To go further, they have both improved their driver system to include evasive action — swerving and other maneuvers to avoid the crash. They also created a … [Read more...] about Waymo Claims Superhuman Ability To Dodge Accidents, So Why Aren’t They Launched?
Logitech's MX Mechanical Keyboard and MX Master 3S Mouse are aimed at creators, or professionals who require precision and high performance out of their peripherals. The premium keyboard/mouse set costs a pretty penny but does it deliver on what it promises? Design The MX Mechanical keyboard is available in two variants - full size keyboard and a tenkeyless option called Mechanical Mini. For the purpose of our review we had the full size keyboard to test out. The keyboard feels heavy, thanks to a metal construction that feels very sturdy and dependable. The metal frame is laid out in a striking two-tone chassis, that is neatly separated on the top by two smooth curves, and a new logi logo in the middle. The keys themselves are brushed in light and dark colors, with the important function keys being laid out in a darker tone to denote their importance. It's an interesting and subtly stylish look, one that doesn't immediately draw your attention but invites further … [Read more...] about Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard and MX Master 3S Mouse Review: The perfect work companions
