Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 11:47 AM EDT Apr 17, 2019 Curt Smyser got great news earlier this month when he learned one of his track athletes qualified for the Drake Relays. The Drake Relays are one of the most prestigious track and field events in the county, and Smyser was thrilled that his senior high jumper earned another chance to compete. But the news also made Smyser’s life easier on a personal level. The football and track coach at Chariton High in south central Iowa, Smyser was lamenting a few weeks earlier how he was going to balance the busy day he had in store for next Thursday. Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 10:40 AM EST Feb 5, 2019 Free Press sports writer Dave Birkett highlights 15 NFL draft prospects who may interest the Detroit Lions in the first two rounds of April's draft. First round OLB Josh Allen, Kentucky Allen seems like a good bet to go in the top five after a 17-sack season, but if he slides to eight he’ll be tough to pass on. He’s more outside linebacker than defensive end, but would give a big boost to the Lions pass rush. DE Rashan Gary, Michigan Gary didn’t have a great 2018 season with just 3.5 sacks, and he appeared to coast at times with the draft on his mind. But he’s a big-time talent who could play end or tackle in Matt Patricia’s defense. More: Rashan Gary starts own sports agency: 'Going to change the game' DT Ed Oliver, Houston Once considered in the conversation for the No. 1 overall pick, Oliver is a tremendous talent who had a quiet year. The Lions are stacked at DT with … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions: 2019 NFL draft prospects for Rounds 1, 2
