At the moment, it might be easy to draw conclusions about rich people based on the billionaire in the White House. But in reality, most affluent Americans are much less inclined to wear their wealth—or talk about it—than Donald Trump. The people more likely to flaunt their wealth are actually the ones with less money in the bank. “The most extravagant homes I’ve been in have belonged to people who, four out of five times, had to move out because they couldn’t afford it,” says wealth advisor Natalie Schmook. By worrying about it. “I see people with $10 million, and they can tell you exactly how much they’re saving each month,” Manisha Thakor, the VP of financial education at wealth management firm Brighton Jones, told me recently. … [Read more...] about 5 lies you’ve been told about rich people and money

It takes hard work and dedication to graduate at the top of your high school class — whether you end up in the top 10 among 90 classmates or the top 35 among 350. Today we salute the hundreds of students who accomplished that rank in St. Paul and other east metro schools. This annual project invites schools to send us a list of their “Top Graduates,” however they define them. Some schools designate the traditional valedictorian and salutatorian, others define a Top 10, and some recognize a long list of students who have achieved honors status. Our 2019 compilation shows students headed to colleges from coast to coast — from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, to the University of California Berkeley. As college majors, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) is strong. Some 80 students featured will major in a bioscience field; another 80 in an engineering discipline; three dozen in computer science. Other graduates are joining the U.S. military or … [Read more...] about Top graduates 2019: When their hard work meets the future

There’s a lot of money riding on whether wireless carriers and phone makers can make consumers understand the next generation of wireless service, 5G, and why they should want to buy into it. Many Americans are just now hearing of the new, faster service, which will deliver blazing speeds with very little latency. Meanwhile, the carriers are spending millions building the networks that will support the new service, and phone makers are working on the first wave of smartphones that will support it. That’s why it’s amazing that one of the industry’s biggest players is intentionally trying to confuse the marketplace about what 5G is, and when it will be arriving in your neighborhood. As it’s done before, AT&T is getting ahead of a wireless transition, and will begin labeling some of its 4G phones as 5G models. The company says that it’s justified in doing so because it’ll use the brand name “5G Evolution,” meaning that the … [Read more...] about How dumb do you think your customers are, AT&T?
