Which way is the wind blowing in California? In some respects, wind energy in the state has never been better but by other measurements growth has flat-lined for the past four years.Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released its annual report analyzing technologies and markets for the wind industry that showed California has installed 5,656 megawatts of utility-scale wind, fourth-highest in the nation.California also ranks fifth in capacity for smaller, distributed wind energy systems since 2003, with 66 megawatts. According to the most recent numbers compiled by the California Energy Commission, wind accounts for 36 percent of generation from renewable facilities — the most in the state, edging out solar. One would think those figures would have the state’s leading wind industry group practically giddy. But instead, Nancy Rader, the executive director at the California Wind Energy Association, was practically glum when asked about the future of wind … [Read more...] about Wind energy in California: The good news and bad news

Many tech moguls have modest beginnings, developing in garages and sleeping at their offices. But don’t be fooled: many of tech’s billionaires now have million-dollar homes and private islands. Oracle founder Larry Ellison bought 98% of an island in Hawaii for $US600 million, while Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg has a habit of buying up surrounding properties for maximum privacy. Some CEOs, however, have stuck to their roots: Apple’s Tim Cook lives in a relatively modest 2,400-square-foot home in Palo Alto, California. Here’s a look at the mansions and estates of tech’s elite. Nearly a fifth of the world’s 100 richest billionaires made their fortune in tech. And although some of their success stories start off modestly (and most likely in a garage), many tech moguls are taking their millions and splurging on real estate. For instance, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Microsoft’s Bill Gates live less than a mile from each other in the … [Read more...] about MOGUL MANSIONS: From Elon Musk to Jeff Bezos, here are the homes and estates owned by the wealthiest people in tech

It’s a bright September morning in San Carlos, California, and Masayoshi Son, chairman of SoftBank, is throwing me off schedule. I’d come, as he had, to meet with the people he’s tapped to run the Vision Fund, his $100 billion bet on the future of, well, everything. After almost four decades of building SoftBank into a telecom conglomerate, Son, an inveterate dealmaker, launched this unprecedented venture two years ago to back startups that he believes are driving a new wave of digital upheaval. He has staked everything on its success–his company, his reputation, his fortune. We’d both arrived with the same basic question: Where is this massive vehicle heading? But because I wasn’t the one footing the 12-figure allowance, I understood that I’d be the one to wait. In the hubbub of Son’s visit, my 9 a.m. meeting gets rescheduled multiple times until it’s set for 4:30 p.m. When I finally arrive at the Vision Fund’s offices, … [Read more...] about The most powerful person in Silicon Valley
