Nintendo has impeccable timing. Just when Animal Crossing: New Horizons was on the verge of going stale with the lack of new content, the developer recently announced a July 3 update that adds major new features. The most obvious one is swimming and diving. It’s an option that appeared previously in Animal Crossing: New Leaf and will make its debut on the Nintendo Switch title. Players will need to grab a wet suit so they can swim and dive around their islands. Players can’t go far but they can hug the coast and find new sea creatures to add to their museum and perhaps terrify Blathers. Along with swimming, Pascal, a red sea otter, will make an appearance in New Horizons . He loves scallops and if players find one, they can trade it to him for mermaid-themed crafting recipes. Lastly, Gulliver has a wardrobe change. He's dressed more like a pirate and helping him will get players a special reward. Although his tasks to find his communicator pieces are redundant at times, … [Read more...] about ‘Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ with swimming and diving comes at the right time

Workers who joined Starbucks for transgender health benefits worry they are now at risk
Earlier this year, an Arizona woman whom we’ll call Kelly was completing the paperwork required to get facial feminization surgery. She was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in her teens, and after years of struggling with depression, she decided as a 20-something to transition. Then reality hit fast: The process is expensive, lengthy, and rarely covered by insurance. “So I did what lots of trans people do,” she tells Fast Company . “I got a job at Starbucks.” advertisement advertisement Starbucks has covered some types of gender-reassignment surgery since 2012. But in a radical move in 2018, it worked with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health to unveil a supplemental insurance plan that added coverage of procedures “previously considered cosmetic,” such as breast reduction, forehead contouring, calf implants, and hair transplants. With the requisite medical signoffs, Starbucks workers could get many of these procedures with zero … [Read more...] about Workers who joined Starbucks for transgender health benefits worry they are now at risk

Opinion: Why so many workers are still quitting their jobs
Dana Peterson is an executive vice president and chief economist at The Conference Board. The opinions expressed in this commentary are her own. Aside from, "You're on mute," "I quit" has likely become one of the most popular sayings in the US over the last two years. But while more people are returning to in-person meetings, quitting does not appear to be letting up. Indeed, an astounding 4.4 million people quit their jobs in April, and there are 11.4 million jobs waiting to be filled, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) . So why are so many workers quitting? Here are four factors driving the so-called "Great Resignation" — and what businesses have been doing to stem the tide. Money Higher wages are among the many reasons that workers quit their jobs today. Just prior to the pandemic, the BLS' labor share of income — the percentage of economic output that goes to workers in the form of compensation — was just … [Read more...] about Opinion: Why so many workers are still quitting their jobs
Opinion: Airlines are facing pressure from all directions
Tom Stalnaker is an Oliver Wyman partner and the firm's global aviation sector lead. Khalid Usman is a partner in Oliver Wyman's transportation and services practice specializing in airline economics. Andrew Buchanan is a vice president in Oliver Wyman's transportation and services practice. The opinions expressed in this commentary are their own. After two years of enduring masks, social distancing and quarantines, there's not much that can come between consumers and their summer vacations this year. Outbreaks of Covid-19 no longer seem to stop them from traveling — and based on recent demand for air travel, neither do higher prices for getaways. But while consumers may have gotten over fears of Covid, the economy is still riddled with its impacts — including high fuel prices , disrupted supply chains, and a labor market filled with workers hoping to work at least part of the time from home. For airlines, busy summer travel is turning into a season of operational … [Read more...] about Opinion: Airlines are facing pressure from all directions

Explainer: Abortion, tech and surveillance
With abortion now or soon to be illegal in over a dozen US states and severely restricted in many more, Big Tech companies that vacuum up personal details of their users are facing new calls to limit that tracking and surveillance. One fear is that law enforcement or vigilantes could use those data troves against people seeking ways to end unwanted pregnancies. History has repeatedly demonstrated that whenever people’s personal data is tracked and stored, there’s always a risk that it could be misused or abused. With the Supreme Court's Friday overruling of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalised abortion, collected location data, text messages, search histories, emails and seemingly innocuous period and ovulation-tracking apps could be used to prosecute people who seek an abortion – or medical care for a miscarriage – as well as those who assist them. “In the digital age, this decision opens the door to law enforcement and private bounty hunters seeking vast amounts of … [Read more...] about Explainer: Abortion, tech and surveillance
