The 26-year-old Zhang bagged game-high nine points to help China defeat Germany 21-10 in their last group match. Debutant Cao contributed six, while Wang and Wan both had three. BS/MD Admission Insights From The 2020-2021 Cycle
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 2021, Harvard University was the most competitive undergrad school to get into, with only a 3.4% acceptance rate. It was closely followed by fellow Ivy League school, Columbia University, which had a 3.7% acceptance rate. It’s no secret that Ivy League and top universities are extraordinarily difficult to get into, but it may come as a surprise that BS/MD, also known as direct medical programs, are even harder to secure a coveted seat. This past cycle, programs like the Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars program had more than 1600 applicants for just six seats—putting the acceptance rate at less than 1%. Similarly, Case Western Reserve University’s Pre-Professional Scholars Program (PPSP) had an acceptance rate of 1%. Despite these low acceptance rates, high school students are still drawn to BS/MD programs because of the benefits: often, they will secure a spot in the partnered medical school as long as they meet … [Read more...] about BS/MD Admission Insights From The 2020-2021 Cycle
The 2020 Presidential Candidates’ Proposals On Lowering College Costs

Instead, this article is specific to proposals around lowering the ballooning cost of higher education. Bruised stocks find support as growth fears dent commodities
- A + A SINGAPORE/TOKYO (June 24): Global stocks and bonds headed for their first weekly gain in a month on Friday (June 24), with growth concerns tempered by hopes that sliding commodity prices can help brake runaway inflation. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 1.4% on Friday, helped by short sellers bailing out of Alibaba — which rose nearly 7% — amid hints that China's technology crackdown is abating. Japan's Nikkei rose 1.2% for a 2% weekly gain, while S&P 500 futures extended overnight gains by 0.76%. EuroSTOXX 50 futures rose 1% and FTSE futures rose 0.6%. The week has been marked by steep declines for commodities on worries that the world economy is looking shaky and that interest rate hikes will hurt growth — which in turn is also prompting traders to pare back some bets on the size of rate hikes. Copper, a bellwether of economic output with its wide range of industrial and construction uses, is heading for its steepest … [Read more...] about Bruised stocks find support as growth fears dent commodities
Juvic sizzles with 64 for four-shot lead at Southwoods
Juvic Pagunsan (photo above): One-shot shy of course record —CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Juvic Pagunsan lit up the Masters course on Friday, gunning down an eagle and seven birdies on the way to an eight-under-par 64 and a four-stroke lead in individual play after the first round of the Manila Southwoods Pro-Am in Carmona, Cavite. The enigmatic Japan Tour mainstay missed matching the course record set twice during the defunct Resorts World Manila Masters of the Asian Tour after he dropped his only shot on the par-3 fifth hole. His sterling play led his team made up of Senate President Tito Sotto, his brother Maru and Bing Lapus to the low gross lead with a 61. Jonel Ababa, the many-time winner on the Philippine Golf Tour, returned as 68 to be tied with Albin Engino with the trio of Fidel Concepcion, Justin Quiban and Dino Villanueva trailing another shot back. Pagunsan’s eagle came on the layout’s signature hole, the par-4 9th where he holed a wedge from 80 yards, which boosted his team … [Read more...] about Juvic sizzles with 64 for four-shot lead at Southwoods
EU leaders tackle inflation, energy shocks from Russia’s war
(Representative image: Reuters) A day after endorsing Ukraine's candidacy to join the European Union, the bloc's leaders turned their attention to the severe economic turbulence looming over the coming months as the full impact of Russia's war sinks in and the threat of recession rises. The EU's 27 leaders gathered in Brussels to grapple with surging inflation, energy shocks, dwindling business and consumer confidence, and growing budget pressures. The leaders also will have to contend with higher borrowing costs as the European Central Bank prepares to raise interest rates for the first time in 11 years to counter runaway price increases. ECB President, Christine Lagarde, who plans to raise rates next month and again in September, joined the EU summit to discuss the darkening economic outlook. Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said, "We are in a difficult situation, its very important that we have this discussion." The EU has spent the previous decade battling … [Read more...] about EU leaders tackle inflation, energy shocks from Russia’s war
Glove stocks’ sharp price fall: Analysts say valuations appear attractive but ‘wait for more clarity’
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 24): Public Investment Bank Bhd said on Friday rubber glove manufacturers' valuations appear attractive following the sharp fall in their share prices as the global Covid-19 situation appears to have come under control as countries reopen their international borders. However, Public Investment research team's key message to investors is "wait for more clarity" from the Malaysian rubber glove sector, which is closely watched as a beneficiary of the Covid-19 outbreak which started in early 2020, as demand for rubber gloves, seen as a crucial piece of personal protective equipment, jumped to curb the global spread of Covid-19. Covid-19-driven demand for gloves is however now seen normalising as global vaccination progress leads to anticipation that the Covid-19 outbreak can be curbed. Such sentiment is already reflected in share prices of major glove manufacturers — Top Glove Corp Bhd, Hartalega Holdings Bhd, Supermax Corp Bhd and Kossan … [Read more...] about Glove stocks’ sharp price fall: Analysts say valuations appear attractive but ‘wait for more clarity’
Toyota, Subaru shares drop on ’embarrassing’ recalls of first EVs
- A + A TOKYO (June 24): Toyota Motor shares slipped after it recalled some of its first mass-made all-electric cars, launched two months ago, because of a risk of wheels coming loose, a setback to its ambitions to electrify its model range. Toyota, the world's largest automaker by sales, said on Thursday it would recall 2,700 bZ4X sport utility vehicles globally. Subaru Corp, in which Toyota has a nearly 20% stake, also said it was recalling about 2,600 units of the Solterra, a related model. The Solterra, Subaru's first all-electric vehicle, was jointly developed with Toyota and shares major components with the bZ4X. The recall added to problems at Toyota, which has been forced to cut production frequently this year due to the global chip shortage and other supply issues and is facing investor pressure because of its slowness in embracing battery electric vehicles (BEVs). "It's embarrassing," said Christopher Richter, an analyst at CLSA. "People have waited … [Read more...] about Toyota, Subaru shares drop on ’embarrassing’ recalls of first EVs
After pressure from Toyota chief, Japan emphasises support for hybrid vehicles
Akio Toyoda - A + A TOKYO (June 24): Toyota Motor Corp's chief had lobbied the Japanese government to make clear it supported hybrid vehicles as much as battery electrics or face losing the auto industry's support, a senior lawmaker told a ruling party meeting. The lobbying by Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota and chairman of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) industry group, comes as the automaker faces increased scrutiny from green investors who said it has been slow to embrace battery-electric vehicles and pressed governments to slow a transition to them. Akira Amari, a former industry minister and a veteran member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), requested changes to the government's annual economic policy road map at a June 3 meeting, saying he spoke with Toyoda a day earlier, according to notes and audio of the meeting reviewed by Reuters. The final version of the document included a reference to "so-called electric-powered … [Read more...] about After pressure from Toyota chief, Japan emphasises support for hybrid vehicles
