Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sometimes a movie has everything going for it: a wonderful cast, a top tier writer behind it, some great ideas, and a premise that’s literally to die for. Sometimes, despite all that, the film fails to find its roots and land its premises anyway. They/Them , from writer/director John Logan, is unfortunately one of those. It has everything going for it, but a few thematic, plot, and structural issues hamper what could have been an era-defining slasher. In They/Them , the feature directorial debut of John Logan (who penned a number of films, including Gladiator , The Aviator , and much more), a group of young LGBTQ folks arrive at a gay conversion camp, led by Owen Whistler (Kevin Bacon). Campers Jordan (Theo Germaine), Alexandra (Quei Tann), and more struggle through the increasingly threatening camp atmosphere, and that’s before a mysterious killer starts hacking through various camp residents. Box Office: Why ‘Prey’ Likely Would Have Struggled In Theaters
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If we’re judging by social media feeds, Prey was last weekend’s most popular movie. The picture, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and penned by Patrick Aison, stars Amber Midthunder as a young Comanche who must defend her village when a Predator shows up for a few days to kill. It is pretty damn good, and much of the buzz has over displeasure that it debuted as a Hulu original. While it arguably deserved a theatrical release, it likely wouldn’t have been a box office hit. Since Prey was a holdover before Disney bought Fox in 2019, the potential for post-theatrical streaming boosts was contractually limited. Had it been released in theaters, its post-theatrical afterlife would have begun not on Disney+ or Hulu but on HBO Max. However, if Disney wanted the film in theaters badly enough, they likely could have worked out a post-theatrical deal akin to Death on the Nile which premiered at home after theatrical on both Hulu … [Read more...] about Box Office: Why ‘Prey’ Likely Would Have Struggled In Theaters

[+] Post via Getty Images) Getty The grass is actually greener on the other side. While box office revenues on Broadway have fallen in recent weeks as tourists left New York and the cold winter weather set in, box office revenues of Broadway shows touring across the nation are still quite high. In fact, some musicals made more money last week on the road than on Broadway. For example, while the Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen generated $1,272,935 in ticket sales over eight performances last week in New York, the show generated $1,477,161 in ticket sales over seven performances last week on tour in Seattle. The touring production filled up the Paramount Theatre, which has more than twice as many seats as the Music Box Theatre, where Dear Evan Hansen now performs on Broadway. In addition, … [Read more...] about Musicals Make More Money on the Road than on Broadway

The network’s parent company, NBCUniversal, is believed to be the biggest beneficiary of the show’s astonishing profits. Universal Pictures, its film studio, invested about $10 million in the $14 million musical. “It will go down at the end of the day as one of the more profitable ventures that Universal has ever entered into,” commented one of its lead producers, Marc Platt, in an earlier interview. “If Wicked was a film, then it would be one of the most — if not the most — successful films of all … [Read more...] about NBCUniversal Basks in Own Success with ‘Wicked’ Anniversary Telecast
