Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The roots of Simple Plan's new album, Harder Than It Looks , go back 20 years. In celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their influential and very successful debut, No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls , the band tapped into the sound and feel of that record for the new album, adding in 20 years of experience since then, as well as the now adult themes in their life. The release of Harder Than It Looks is part of a big year for the Canadian pop-punk superstars, who will be out this year for a celebration of their Canadian lineage with fellow Canucks Sum 41 on the "Blame Canada" tour. I spoke with Simple Plan drummer Chuck Comeau about the new album, his fandom of Pearl Jam, why the band learned to embrace the success of their debut and not run away from it and much more. Steve Baltin: Let's start with the anniversary of the debut album. When you're in the midst of a record, you don't have time to appreciate … [Read more...] about Q&A: Simple Plan On New Music, 20 Years Of Success, Touring With Sum 41 And More

‘Countless Lives … Trillions Of Dollars’: Don Jr Makes The Difference Between Old Right And New Right Pretty Clear, In One Tweet
Donald Trump Jr. distinguished between the Old and New Right with a clip of former President George W. Bush in a Thursday tweet. Bush gave a speech late Wednesday at the George W. Bush Institute smearing Russian President Vladimir Putin for attacking Ukraine. “In contrast, Russian elections are rigged, political opponents are imprisoned or otherwise eliminated for participating in the electoral process,” Bush said. “The result is an absence of checks and balances in Russia and the decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq, I mean of Ukraine.” Trump Jr. responded to Bush’s own foreign policy decision during his presidency after he deployed U.S. troops to Iraq in 2003. “I wish he would’ve been this honest and critical of himself 20 years, countless lives, and trillions of dollars ago,” Trump Jr. said. I wish he would have been this honest and critical of himself 20 years, countless lives, and trillions of dollars ago. … [Read more...] about ‘Countless Lives … Trillions Of Dollars’: Don Jr Makes The Difference Between Old Right And New Right Pretty Clear, In One Tweet

Chobani Founder Hamdi Ulukaya: ‘Innovation Doesn’t Happen When You’re Comfortable’
Hamdi Ulukaya gave his first speech at the age of 20. The son of Turkish nomads was nervous, but he told the couple dozen people there with him in a small town near the Euphrates River that he was going to write about injustices and human rights violations. He'd publish a newspaper to confront political injustice. "I had no idea how to publish a newspaper," he says. "I did it anyway." It was that newspaper that got him in trouble with the government, he explains, causing him to flee Turkey, immigrate to the United States, found the yogurt company Chobani, and begin what would become a coalition of more than 200 companies that aim to find employment for and support refugees around the globe . On May 13, Ulukaya stood in front of a crowd of new graduates of Northeastern University at Fenway Park in Boston, and exhorted them to make a difference in the world as he has. Looking at their 20-year-old faces, he said, he saw himself at 20: "I can tell all of you have the same fire … [Read more...] about Chobani Founder Hamdi Ulukaya: ‘Innovation Doesn’t Happen When You’re Comfortable’
Zoom Is Crushing Students’ Spirits. It’s Time To Come Back To Class.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When the Covid-19 pandemic first hit, in March of 2020, colleges everywhere (including Johns Hopkins University, where I teach and conduct research) shut down and sent everyone home. Within two weeks, we switched all of our classes to Zoom. It was a remarkable pivot, and necessary at the time. But we’re now more than two years into the pandemic, and many colleges and universities are still holding classes on Zoom, or offering a Zoom option for students who want it. This has become, to put it bluntly, a disaster for students. The Chronicle of Higher Education published a lengthy article in April that surveyed faculty all over the country. It paints a grim picture: students are reporting mental health problems in record numbers, grades are low, and attendance is even lower. Depression is widespread. College life, it seems, is not good. Most universities returned to in-person classes this past fall, and some … [Read more...] about Zoom Is Crushing Students’ Spirits. It’s Time To Come Back To Class.
N3ptune, a triple threat artist, has catapulted to performing on Denver’s big stages
Denver singer, model and dancer N3ptune stalked a Mercury Cafe stage last week, planting one chunky platform shoe on a wooden chair, squatting with intense, unwavering gazes, and otherwise bending the space to his will. “I used to do karaoke here back in 2016 — Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé — but was too nervous to do my own songs,” the 24-year-old said as he posed for photos, sunlight sparkling off of his jewelry and eyes. “Now, when people bring me onto a show, it’s obvious they want to shake things up.” N3ptune is new to the larger Denver music scene, having played only a handful of big stages over the last few years, including Denver PrideFest’s CenterStage. But an aggressive work ethic in 2021 vaulted him forward, injecting a giddy, fizzing sense of possibility into a town saturated with folky guitar acts. His explosive sets, centered on a soulful, muscular voice that’s often backed by live guitar and dancers, gained notice at the 2021 Underground Music Showcase, but … [Read more...] about N3ptune, a triple threat artist, has catapulted to performing on Denver’s big stages
Everything that’s old is new again: Elevating all three pillars of sustainability
Watching the old become new again is a constant in life, with fashion, design, and even music that regularly reemerges decades later. This cycle, typically driven by younger generations, is now contributing to meaningful commerce that adds purpose behind each item sold and purchased—like finding the perfect vintage blazer from a local thrift store for your wardrobe, or searching online for the used tripod you need for your photography business and saving it from heading straight to a landfill. advertisement advertisement Greater intention within commerce is one thing, but even better, those intentions often lead to sustainability practices that have a positive impact on the environment, economy, and society. This positive impact often goes unnoticed. But what if that changed? What if everyone knew how easy it is to contribute to and help drive positive change while doing things you already love, like shopping? It’s time we revisit the definition of … [Read more...] about Everything that’s old is new again: Elevating all three pillars of sustainability

‘We’ve seen lifelong friends kill each other:’ How a state capital became one of the deadliest US cities
By Peter Nickeas and Priya Krishnakumar , CNN Updated 1408 GMT (2208 HKT) December 28, 2021 Jackson, Mississippi (CNN) Around Thanksgiving, this crisis-plagued state capital saw a series of shootings that pushed the year's homicide total past 130, setting a grim annual record for a city that over the last two years has quietly become one of the country's deadliest. The killings, like so many in another record-setting year of American gun violence , are not the kind that receive national attention. A local business owner was shot outside a barbershop while sitting in his car . A few days later, a man was killed in a shooting that also wounded a 13-year-old boy . A 22-year-old inside a car was sprayed with gunfire at a gas station . A 63-year-old man whose death by gunfire is still largely unexplained . In the state's most populous city, a former Confederate stronghold that would later give way to thriving Black business districts and serve as a hub for the … [Read more...] about ‘We’ve seen lifelong friends kill each other:’ How a state capital became one of the deadliest US cities
