Private Equity Vs. Venture Capital: Which Is Right For Your Startup?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Financial Consultant & author of Deep Finance, Glenn has spent the past two decades helping startups prepare for funding or acquisition. Securing funding is a crucial step for any startup looking to grow and succeed. As most business founders know, it can be difficult—if not impossible—to raise debt financing to fund new ventures. This is because traditional banks are not structured to provide loans to businesses that fall outside their risk tolerance. This leaves equity investment as the only option for most early-stage enterprises. Equity investors provide funding for startups in exchange for an ownership stake in the business. There are many types of equity investors, but the most well known and frequently used are private equity and venture capital. While these forms of investment share some similarities, they differ in many ways. Private equity investors target established companies that have a proven … [Read more...] about Private Equity Vs. How NWSL Plans To Maximize Growth In 2023 Season, A World Cup Year
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As National Women’s Soccer League commissioner Jessica Berman heads into year two at the helm, she’s got plenty of changes to navigate, from expansion to a television deal to the implementation of vital reforms aimed at making the league a safe place to work . Silicon Valley Bank’s ‘Swimming Naked’ Moment Is Spooking Japan
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Anyone wondering why the Bank of Japan (BOJ) hasn’t had the courage to raise rates these last 20 years will find clues in the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). Events in Santa Clara, California would seem at some remove from the BOJ headquarters 5,100 miles away. But the worst U.S. bank failure since 2008 also has its roots in the Federal Reserve doing what the BOJ hasn’t: normalizing monetary policy. SVB’s downfall bears many fingerprints. Donald Trump’s, for one. The deregulation bill the former U.S. president signed in 2018 exempted SVB from more stringent stress tests. And SVB’s leaders just inspired a Harvard M.B.A course on how not to manage a balance sheet. Hedging, anyone? But the Fed’s most aggressive tightening cycle since the mid-1990s was the real catalyzing event. As Fed Chairman Jerome Powell hiked borrowing costs in 2022 and early 2023, SVB’s poor governance became impossible to hide. It … [Read more...] about Silicon Valley Bank’s ‘Swimming Naked’ Moment Is Spooking Japan
For Steve Ballmer, Building An NBA Champion Is Harder Than Running Microsoft But More Fun
The tenth-richest person on the planet — and one of the loudest when he was Microsoft CEO — is building a luxurious $2 billion arena for the Los Angeles Clippers and plans a calm, non-shrieking celebration if his team wins an NBA championship there. By Jabari Young, Forbes Staff S teve Ballmer has a decision to make. The $80 billion man, owner of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and former CEO of Microsoft, where he’s still the biggest individual shareholder, is building a privately funded $2 billion arena in Inglewood, California. Ballmer will finally be his own landlord, he’ll expand his revenue sources, he’ll get out from under the Lakers — his more popular and more successful co-tenants in downtown L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena — and he’ll be able to better pamper his players who, after eight-plus seasons of his generous stewardship, have yet to get within smelling distance of a championship. The Intuit Dome, expected to be ready next year, is rising across the … [Read more...] about For Steve Ballmer, Building An NBA Champion Is Harder Than Running Microsoft But More Fun
LinkedIn turns 20: An oral history of an unlikely champion
When LinkedIn launched, on May 5, 2003, it wasn’t a given that it would thrive. Born during the doldrums after the original dotcom bust, it arrived at the same time as a flurry of other social networking upstarts, most of which quickly fizzled. Its emphasis on members’ professional lives rather than personal pursuits was seen by some as a strategic blunder. Even the notion of posting your résumé in public was jarringly unfamiliar and likely to be taken as an act of disloyalty. Rather than falling victim to preexisting assumptions, LinkedIn changed them. Eventually, it was not having a LinkedIn profile that was perceived as a weird career move. As the pandemic and its aftermath have reshaped work, the service has both reflected that new world and equipped workers and employers to succeed in it. Its emphasis on professionalism also offers a safe harbor from more toxic and polarizing social platforms. LinkedIn hasn’t escaped the current tech downturn—in February, it … [Read more...] about LinkedIn turns 20: An oral history of an unlikely champion
Trump indictment would be unprecedented moment in U.S. history
The decision whether to indict former President Donald Trump over hush-money payments made on his behalf during his 2016 presidential campaign lies in the hands of a Manhattan grand jury that has been hearing evidence in secret for weeks. An indictment of Trump, who is seeking the White House again in 2024, would be an unprecedented moment in American history, the first criminal case against a former U.S. president. Law enforcement officials are bracing for protests and the possibility of violence after Trump called on his supporters to protest ahead of a possible indictment. An indictment could also test a Republican Party already divided over whether to support Trump next year, in part due to his efforts to undermine his 2020 election loss. Trump denies any wrongdoing and has slammed the Manhattan district attorney’s office probe as politically motivated. Here’s a look at the hush-money probe, grand jury process and possible ramifications for his presidential campaign: … [Read more...] about Trump indictment would be unprecedented moment in U.S. history
Why the Mellon Foundation is spending $125 million to fight the criminal legal system
When Rahsaan Thomas met Emily Nonko inside San Quentin prison in October 2018, he had only just scratched the surface of his journalism trajectory. At the time, he was serving a sentence of 55 years to life and had already published eight or so stories about the criminal justice system in with VICE , Outside , Quill Magazine , and The Marshall Project. He didn’t know if he was ever coming home, and the $500 he had acquired from writing was not sufficient should he be granted clemency. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Marshall Project (@marshallproj) So, when he and Nonko realized they had aligned passions—hers being a commitment to getting incarcerated journalists work published; his a sustainable career as a writer—they teamed up to launch Empowerment Avenue (EA), an organization that partners outside journalists with incarcerated writers to get their work published. “We … [Read more...] about Why the Mellon Foundation is spending $125 million to fight the criminal legal system
