A concise approach to being a true advocate for your BIPOC coworkers

· February 22, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Advocacy is the process where someone with privilege and power is willing to take steps to protect, publicly support, and dismantle systems against a marginalized group of people. In order to be an advocate, you have to be willing to do additional work beyond getting familiar with the nuances of marginalized groups and developing empathy for them. It is about taking action to change how others experience the world. Similar to allyship, advocacy is not a title—it is a verb. There are actions that you have to take to be considered an advocate. advertisement advertisement Sometimes people mistakenly believe allyship is less important than advocacy. That is not true. Both roles are necessary. A simple way to distinguish between the two is to recognize that allyship is focused on the individual and their unique experiences and perspectives. Advocacy is focused on the systems. In order to be an … [Read more...] about A concise approach to being a true advocate for your BIPOC coworkers

Vgo Telepresence Bot Revealed: A Whole Remote-Working Day of Battery

· June 2, 2010 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement We mentioned Vgo , the telepresence bot, yesterday, as being possibly the first truly viable remote-working avatar robot we’ve seen, though we didn’t know much about how he worked. Then the folks at Vgo revealed some data to us, and drove the point home. advertisement Vgo’s actually carefully scaled to be ergonomic. He’s four foot high from the ground, placing your avatar video feed at a useful height for interacting with people who are either walking around the physical office, or sitting at a desk in a meeting room. This also works when the other person in the chat is in bed, in a health care scenario, or your bot can even take part in face-to-face conferences (remember the holographic video conference in Star Wars I where everyone’s sitting chatting? Think about that, with today’s technology). With a one-foot footprint, he’s pretty maneuverable. At just 18 pounds, he’s also lightweight enough to … [Read more...] about Vgo Telepresence Bot Revealed: A Whole Remote-Working Day of Battery

advertisement advertisement advertisement In 2018, director RJ Cutler ( The September Issue , Belushi ) was invited to Billie Eilish’s Los Angeles home with her parents and brother/producer Finneas O’Connell to discuss the possibility of directing a documentary of her life. At the time, the buzz around Eilish was building to a fever pitch with her breakout single “Ocean Eyes,” her well received 2017 EP Don’t Smile at Me , and her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? on the horizon. advertisement advertisement “She was just back from a trip to Asia, and there was a fitting going on. The house was overflowing with racks of clothes and boxes of sneakers that people had sent to her,” Cutler recalls. “The house was like a metaphor for Billie’s life—it was bursting at the seams.” Cutler says he was intrigued by Eilish prior to that meeting but became exponentially so afterward. “She’s a magnetic force,” he … [Read more...] about Inside the “full feast” of Billie Eilish’s life in the Apple TV doc ‘The World’s a Little Blurry’

Netflix’s ‘Biggie’ documentary lets Christopher Wallace tell his own story

· March 1, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement The most important word in the title of Netflix’s latest documentary, Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell , is “I.” advertisement advertisement Fans of the Notorious B.I.G., who sold over 30 million albums and was inducted last year into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , have already heard the story most filmmakers want to tell about the revolutionary rapper: mainly, his deadly beef with Tupac Shakur. That story has been aptly cinematically covered by now. It was the subject of the 2002 documentary Biggie & Tupac as well as the basis for City of Lies , the floptastic 2018 detective thriller inexplicably starring Johnny Depp. Even in Notorious , the hagiographic feature from 2009, a lot of screen time is devoted to the dynamic between the pair—their friendship, their falling out, the media stoking tensions between them, and of course, the tragic outcome. In I Got a Story … [Read more...] about Netflix’s ‘Biggie’ documentary lets Christopher Wallace tell his own story
