By Peter Nickeas and Priya Krishnakumar , CNN Updated 1408 GMT (2208 HKT) December 28, 2021 Jackson, Mississippi (CNN) Around Thanksgiving, this crisis-plagued state capital saw a series of shootings that pushed the year's homicide total past 130, setting a grim annual record for a city that over the last two years has quietly become one of the country's deadliest. The killings, like so many in another record-setting year of American gun violence , are not the kind that receive national attention. A local business owner was shot outside a barbershop while sitting in his car . A few days later, a man was killed in a shooting that also wounded a 13-year-old boy . A 22-year-old inside a car was sprayed with gunfire at a gas station . A 63-year-old man whose death by gunfire is still largely unexplained . In the state's most populous city, a former Confederate stronghold that would later give way to thriving Black business districts and serve as a hub for the … [Read more...] about ‘We’ve seen lifelong friends kill each other:’ How a state capital became one of the deadliest US cities

India bans wheat exports as heat wave hurts crop, domestic prices soar
MUMBAI -- India banned wheat exports on Saturday days after saying it was targeting record shipments this year, as a scorching heat wave curtailed output and domestic prices hit a record high. The government said it would still allow exports backed by already issued letters of credit and to countries that request supplies "to meet their food security needs". The move to ban overseas shipments was not in perpetuity and could be revised, senior government officials told a press conference. Global buyers were banking on supplies from the world's second-biggest wheat producer after exports from the Black Sea region plunged following Russia's Feb. 24 attack on Ukraine. Before the ban, India had aimed to ship a record 10 million tonnes this year. The officials added that there was no dramatic fall in wheat output this year, but unregulated exports had led to a rise in local prices. "We don't want wheat trade to happen in an unregulated manner or hoarding to happen," commerce … [Read more...] about India bans wheat exports as heat wave hurts crop, domestic prices soar

Even If You’re Not A Tourist, This European City Wants You To Visit
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If you're traveling to Europe this summer, maybe you're sensitive to all the tourism clichés. You don't want to be the visitor staring mindlessly at the Eiffel Tower wearing a T-shirt and baseball cap that advertises: "I am an American!" You want to be a traveler, not a tourist. The travel industry also stopped thinking of you as a tourist during the pandemic. One European city, in particular, is going to great lengths to erase the lines between leisure travelers, business travelers, meeting delegates — and even local visitors. But for the rest of us, the question remains: In a post-pandemic world, how do you travel without being, you know, one of those tourists? It's going to be a big summer for vacations. Travel spending is expected to reach more than $1.1 trillion for the year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by about 11 percent. That's according to estimates by the World Travel & Tourism Council and Oxford … [Read more...] about Even If You’re Not A Tourist, This European City Wants You To Visit
Airbnb Launches Crackdown On Parties For Summer Holidays
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Planning a big Memorial Day party kickoff to the summer? Or a midsummer Independence Day bash? Don’t try it at an Airbnb rental. Airbnb announced that the company will be instituting strict “anti-party” restrictions for bookings on July 4th, 2022. The company for the first time will expand these restrictions for Memorial Day weekend. The National Football League (NFL) is jokingly called the “ no-fun league ” for its banning of player celebrations. To some, it may appear that Airbnb’s “anti-party” initiative is an attempt to snatch the no-fun crown. Or is Airbnb trying to protect communities—and its own reputation—from the consequences of out-of-control partying? Who doesn’t love a good party, especially one in a rented house you don’t have to clean up after? Memories of TV shows and movies about parties like Project X (“a celebration of bad behavior”) have no doubt stuck in the minds of former teenagers now old … [Read more...] about Airbnb Launches Crackdown On Parties For Summer Holidays
