Vince Ellis Detroit Free Press Published 10:28 AM EST Nov 12, 2018 Here’s a compliment for Pistons Nation. Typically, when a high-profile player becomes available – as Carmelo Anthony appears to be – it sets off a major case of lust. My Twitter mentions fill up with unrealistic scenarios to get the player. E-mail is a diminished form of communication, but a trickle of observations usually streams into my inbox. But the fans showed restraint when the news Anthony and the Houston Rockets will likely part ways. New York Times NBA reporter Marc Stein broke the news Sunday shortly before 5 p.m. I didn’t hear peep until I checked my inbox Monday morning. I read the brief analysis while standing in line for my small coffee at the Tim Horton’s (a daily ritual) located in Midtown. I had to stifle a public giggle. There are many reasons why Anthony – an aging 10-time All-Star – would be a poor fit for the Pistons. But in the name of social … [Read more...] about Carmelo Anthony to the Detroit Pistons? Rod Beard The Detroit News Published 9:36 PM EDT Oct 15, 2018 The Pistons haven’t won a playoff series in a decade; they haven’t even won a playoff game since falling to the Boston Celtics in the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals. There’s been a lot of LeBron James dominating the East in the interim, but the Pistons look to have their best chance to end that drought with the squad they’ve assembled for this season. After acquiring Blake Griffin at the trade deadline last season, they stumbled and finished 39-43, finishing ninth in the East. With a healthy Griffin and Reggie Jackson returning, the Pistons are ready to challenge not only for a postseason spot, but Griffin said at media day that they’re aiming to host a first-round series. First-year coach Dwane Casey and the Pistons will need a lot of things to go right for them to achieve that goal. Here’s a look at five things they’ll need to do to make the playoffs: 1.Stay healthy This one … [Read more...] about Five things the Detroit Pistons need to reach the playoffs
Vince Ellis Detroit Free Press Published 11:49 p.m. UTC Aug 12, 2018 I have a complicated relationship with ESPN’s trade machine. On one hand, it’s a go-to resource to learn if a trade rumor is feasible. But on the other, if gives license for fans to play backseat general manager and send you fantasyland trade proposals — proposals that somehow land Kevin Durant for every player on the roster they would like banished from existence. Sachin Gupta laughs Wednesday afternoon when I explain that his invention has become a bane for sports writers. But it’s clear in a 20-minute phone conversation with the newest member of the Detroit Pistons front office, Gupta brings ambition and energy to the organization. And those days as a software engineer at ESPN where he helped to develop the trade machine served as a small step during his rise. “(Joining an NBA front office) wasn’t the goal of taking on the project," said Gupta, who was named assistant … [Read more...] about The Detroit Pistons just hired the developer of ESPN’s trade machine

You can reach him at [email protected] and follow him on [email protected] Who would be the best fit and hire for the Detroit Pistons? Dwane Casey or Ime Udoka? The Pistons have done some confounding things over the years. (John Kuester, anyone?) But this current basketball purgatory that they’ve put themselves in takes the cake. The Pistons last played a game on April 11. They then spent about a month deciding whether or not they wanted to keep Stan Van Gundy as president and head coach. On May 7, Tom Gores announced that Van Gundy would not return. Since that time, other than allowing GM Jeff Bower’s contract to run out and bringing in Ed Stefanski as a senior adviser, … [Read more...] about Dwane Casey or Ime Udoka to coach the Detroit Pistons? Mick McCabe Special to the Detroit Free Press Published 12:27 p.m. UTC May 23, 2018 When are the Detroit Pistons going to stop messing around and name Shane Battier the president of basketball operations? This is the no-brainer to end all no-brainers, and it is that way on a couple of fronts. First, the emotional side of it. Battier, 39, who reportedly will get a second interview for a front-office position with the Pistons, per the Miami Herald, is a local kid who grew up in the area, winning the 1997 Hal Schram Mr. Basketball award while leading Birmingham Detroit Country Day to three state championships. He then went to Duke, where he won a national championship and became the Naismith national player of the year. While at Duke, he had 3.6 GPA and earned a degree in religious studies.
