Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I’m betting I’m one of the few people in the world whose first trip to Alaska involved volunteering at the Iditarod. But I shouldn’t be the last. Alaska’s Last Great Race is in its 51 st year, and for travelers to Anchorage, Willow, and Nome, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that shouldn’t be missed. Iditarod is run almost entirely by volunteers, hundreds of which travel from all over the world to do everything from setting up the official start in Willow to working security at various checkpoints. The famed dog-sled race crosses two mountain ranges, including North America’s largest, the Alaska Range, and runs along the Yukon River and over the frozen Norton Sound. In odd years (such as this year) the race follows the southern route; in even years, the northern route. In all, the race is approximately 1,000 miles of twists, turns, drop-offs, and cold, cold days and nights. As a visitor, you can register in advance … [Read more...] about For Extra Fun In Alaska, Visit During The Iditarod

Culinary Cruises Target Food Enthusiasts
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Cruise ships are not generally known for their stellar cuisine—it’s not that the food is bad; it’s just that it’s hard to produce top-notch food for thousands of passengers multiple times a day. But Holland America Line (HAL) is looking to change that perception by bringing aboard six world-class celebrity chefs to dining venues across their fleet. Each of the executive chefs is a member of the Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, an international food and wine society. These special culinary cruises are interactive and attract gourmands looking to learn how to professionally slice, dice and sauté like a master chef through live cooking demonstrations, coffee chats and exclusive chef-hosted dinners, which include that chef’s signature dishes. Passengers who book this program learn new skills, are given recipes and are able to spend time with world-famous chefs.
